It's with a heavy heart that I must inform you that this site, Guild Wars Guru, will be shutting down on July 1st and will remain in Archive Mode. Over the past 11 years, we've become, and continued to remain, the #1 fansite for Guild Wars, and it's all because to you guys. Without such a strong and passionate community, Guru would have never made it this far and so we thank you for that.
And while we will be saying good-bye to our home here, we will continue to host forums for the GW community over at our sister site, Guild Wars 2 Guru. In fact, you are more than welcome to head on over now and begin posting. If you have any threads you'd like to transfer over, now would be the time.
So once again thank you, and especially those that contributed their time and knowledge to make Guru the amazing place it was. We'll see you over at Guild Wars 2 Guru!
I deinstalled GW a while back and now I've started playing again and reinstalled it. It used to work really fast, but now, to put it simply, it was horribly slow, the installation took forever and now every map takes forever to load. I use DSL, and when downloading maps, the speed usually shows up from 50-70 kbps, how long would it take to load a map like ascalon city? Any estimates or ways to make this faster?
If it's really a pain you could you try getting a disc from somebody... it contains the GW.dat file so it installs everything in advance... If you can't find that maybe somebody could upload a disc image to somewhere. Not sure if that is legal (and I can't do it because my upload is so slow), but since there would be no access code to play I can't see the harm done.

No, it doesn't.
It only contains a very small version of the .dat file that will allow you to have some textures available so you can start the game. Everything else will still have to be downloaded.

Are you sure? I just installed the platinum edition and the GW.dat on the disc is a couple gb, wondering around Tyria everything is nearly instant for new areas... compared to Nightfall (no disc), where every area was like minutes and minutes.

Wow, that sucks. Especially since the same/equivalent content is downloaded even if you don't have the disc... I wonder what the justification for that is (take away the physical media and instruction book)... "hey look! I just installed Guild Wars!" / "but do you have an acess code?" / "...no."
I'm not sure about the platinum edition. All the other discs are as I described.
It's copyrighted material. Only the original owners have the right, or can grant the right, to redistribute their material. It would be nice if they'd let a few sites do this though.

It's more a case of each GW disk having a copy of gw.dat that was current when that chapter was originally released. The later the release date, the less downloading you will need to do after installation.
So, EotN>Nightfall>Factions>Prophecies.
Whether they ever provided updated .dats with the Trilogy/Complete Collection, I don't know.
run "-image" at the end of your command line (in your desktop shortcut) it will take about 6 hours on avg. DSL........ you cannot play the game while you are doing this and you must change the command line back to what it was before when it is done. For more info on this just do a Forum Search. It works well, I recommend it highly.
