Saph's worth more than diamonds = broken economy, no wait, is it rubies I'm thinking of?

Crowning glory in doing a dingeon in HM, is getting 2 onyx gemstones for your trouble, makes you feel special that you've not just wasted the last 2-3 hours of your life lol

My experience is it can be dropped anywhere but higher level foes have higher chance.

I've had rubies and sapphires from low level (read has low as level 2) enemies too.

The drop rate is so small though, that is probably impossible to say if a certain mob can't drop it.

By emeralds I guess you mean gems and according to wiki "Can very rarely be dropped from every creature that can drop crafting materials, most commonly in the Underworld, and the Fissure of Woe." and goes for sapphires, rubies and diamonds.

Saying "I didn't get any rubies and I've been playing for 4 years" means nothing if your total /age is 10 hours

I don't remember any strange creature dropping a sapphire, although I saw as many as 4 in one FoW HM run (full human party, and none for me

), from various enemies, and I got several rubies from farming Elementals in Old Ascalon.

Please Check the WIKI. It has been around for a long time now and is a great resource.

That said Rare is right. I have been playing for 2 years and got my first one as a drop last night killing the Hulking stones solo in Hard Mode with my war trying to get enough granite to buy the destroyer weapons for my hall - Account Based WOOT!!! They do not heal themselves. The one boss does but with the sniper support and a timely headbutt killing it is not that hard.

After it dropped I looked on the wiki to see what the heck it was used for. Vambian armor is the only thing that came up. I checked the Rare Mats and it is worth 3,800 Gold! Nice little drop!

A stack of them would be oh so pretty....

like ive had to tell others the wikis may be wrong they are written by fans and not always right. you different responses from the different wikis.
