However, I really wouldn't spend the money on runes and insignias until you have max armor. You generally don't need the boosts from them much early on. Upgrading armor ASAP is definitely a good idea, though.
Have you checked out the GW wikis? There's two of them - http://wiki.guildwars.com/ and http://guildwars.wikia.com/ Also, if you hit F10 while playing, it brings up a screen that has wiki links for all sorts of various things - all of your currently equipped skills and active quests, for starters. The wikis are awesome and incredibly useful. I would advise taking a look at them, as well as the various guides around GWG. |

Verene,
Considering the OP is dying all the time on the starter island, I think he/she might need at least the +50 Health sooner then later; the +30 is even free, the other two usually are under 300 gold each. Not to mention the MAX armor isn't cheap for low levels and degen attacks ignore armor, so some extra HP is always a good idea. Nice thing about GW, there are lots of different ways to play it, so people can do what works best for them. Of course playing with some good players would solve some the problem of dying so much, but then it really helps to know how to use the game systems and heroes/henchies for those times when humans aren't available. Im a "new" player, 9 months off and on. I am also a 5 year veteran of EQ2, I have played SWG since launch, and spend some time in WoW.
This is not the hackneyed old formulaic DnD tank/healer/cc/nuke junk, and thank god. You won't get far thinking of "roles" in the sense of those games. As others have stated the AI is programmed, as much as it can be, to go after the very same targets you would. Lowest level, health, ap, it even considers weapons equipped. I would bet my bottom dollar your last surviving hench on wipes is the ranger...bottom priority generally. You have to play aware. You aren't going to "snap" aggro off your healer, you are going to burn down whatever is attacking it. You are going to prevent damage to your party by burning down and or interrupting the dangerous foes, you learn to identify those and take them out. THINK! All the dps in the world is gonna fail if you are flailing away at the warrior mob while two unmolested mesmers are stacking empathy on you, for one example. Know your enemies. At times simply knowing when to run away will change a potential mission fail to a success. There is no canned group makeup here. You will change your skills and group to face each challenge. A bleed/deepwound war that is fine on fleshies will get nowhere on non-flesh creatures, for instance. You have to learn to play group centric. Heroes/hench/players, doesn't matter, you set up to live or die as a group. Think about the skills you need to support and or tie in with your group. If you are a war doing bleeds you might want to think about giving your hero epidemic to spread them. If you are fighting disease spammers think about giving yourself and your heroes condition removes to take a load off your monks. Take a look on Wiki and find out what henchman skills are and choose the right ones as much as you can. Running with less than a full group while leveling is just asking for defeat. Get heroes, and let them do what they do best. Olias is a great MM, the AI does that pretty well. AI does interrupts well, and faster than you can. Don't give your AI dumb skills, it may seem smart to give all your heroes a rez, till you find them all stopping to rez one downed party member. Same with touch heals (poor alisia). Remember, they don't "think", and just like with Frenzy will spam poor skills at the worst of times. Lol, don't know how many times Ive seen a Kournan bowman cast a useless nature spirit with his last dying breath. Two professions does not mean a split bar. Sometimes its just ONE skill that fits the situation. My Paragon runs with full paragon skills. My ranger template to beat Shiro in NF had only two non-ranger skills. If it is the right skill, a single skill will be more effective than a half a bar full of junk. Decide what you want. My Wars are all Str and Weapon with whatever left stuck in tactics or secondary. Don't muck about with attribute points stuck in 4-5 areas. Pick, concentrate, use the skills to their max potential. My advice would be to start again in NF. Heroes, simple acquisition of bonus attribute points, a cheap 4-500 g ferry to max armor, and a pretty even curve of progression. Campaign travel from NF to the other campaigns is "no fight" and much easier, and getting the ability to change secondary prof is far easier and faster in NF. Yes, Factions leveling may be faster, but then you get thrown off easy Island and are faced with a confusing warren full of enemies that are a LOT harder than anything you saw on Shing Jea.. Nothing on SJI prepares you for Kanieng City. Finally, if you have all three campaigns hit /bonus and get your fire imp, invaluable for newb areas with limited party size. It is an idiot, but a useful one. Oh, and ignore the laughing jerks... odds are they would get /kicked out of a raid encounter on the first mob, playing a game THEY don't get the hang of. Oh wow, this sounds even worse than me (started the game 3 months ago as a Mesmer, currently am tanking, you can thank my keyboard "skills" and my general clumsiness for that).
Anyways some advice. Quote:

Warrior - melee. just good at damage as well as knocking the opponent down and taking a beating. Ranger - loner/versatile. doesn't really have a theme, it's more stick in the back and help the group in a variety of ways. they can be particularly nasty however when focusing on a single target. Monk - heals and protects the group, pretty self explanitory. if you are in an area where there is a lot of undead creatures, their smiting prayers may come in handy, as it's holy damage based and does double damage to undead creatures. Elementalist - damage caster. they have Air Magic (single target), Fire Magic (AoE target), Earth Magic (varied mix of single and AoE as well as protection), and Water Magic (slowing, debuff). Necromancer - degeneration, anti-melee, steals health, causes conditions, powerful skills that exploit corpses. Mesmer - disruption. they try to make other people less effective by stalling them, int erupting them, slowing them down, disabling skills, etc. kinda like a Necro but more of counter. Ritualist - Caster version of Ranger? Support or damage class, can do a lot of things, usually skills are 2-for-1 (like while holding this item, ___ happens, once you drop it, ___ happens). Assassin - spiking. made to run in, attack, escape. lots of damage in a little time. Dervish - melee/caster hybrid. Attack skills with many enchantments for protection. Paragon - monk/ranger hybrid? I say these two since like a Monk they're good at buffing players, but they also have high armor, are long ranged, and are good at conditions like rangers. Quote:

Learn to kite or run A LOT. But as a Paragon, you have some of the highest armor in the game so this won't be as necessary. What kind of armor do you have? It's probably really low. You should get collector armor to start with. Can't get max collector armor for Dervishes or Paragons I believe though, sorry. You can get close though. Quote:

lol cheating? where did that come in? If you don't like the idea of cheating AI then PvE is maybe NOT the place for you. The AI will be routinely over 20, as in up to level 31 (26-28 is typical for normal mode). They'll also possess tons of energy and unreal response times. They have increased attacking/moving/casting speed in hard mode as well! I can tell you though that I've played through all 3 main storylines since January even with my crap skills, so it's not all that bad. Last edited by refer; Apr 16, 2009 at 02:19 PM // 14:19.. |

Ok things went much better last night. With this thread I went in, fixed my Paragon armor (no runes or insignias yet since I dont really understand that) and fixed up Koss and my henchmen.
I also started a messmer/elementalist in Prophecies to go with my friends Necro/Monk and as a team we were pretty much unstoppable. My favorite skill with my my messmer has to be that elementalist ability that makes the next two spells I cast free of energy. With that activated I am able to land my opening dots and get off to a good start on a fight. I also like the way messmers force mobs to take damage when they attack, and have 4 pips of mana regen. Good times so thanks everyone |

A few tips that were not touched upon
Stick to Minor Runes. The Cons of health reduction of Major(-50) and Superior(-75) runes outweigh the Benefits of having +2 or +3 Attributes. For the moment, put a Minor Spear Mastery Rune on your headpiece as it will help you for damage at the moment and it is unexpensive. It is likely best for you to wait to completely pimp out your entire armor at the moment as it is Disposable. Insignias and Runes typically do not transfer from armor to armor. Meaning that if you want to transfer all the pimped out Runes and Insignias from your starter armor to another set you will be getting in the future, you are likely looking at losing a few/many/most of them. This is because in order to transfer them from one armor to another you must use a Salvage Kit and salvage them off, which results in a great risk of destroying the piece of armor in order to remove the Rune/Insignia. Once you do get max armor for your Paragon, the Idea choice would be to go with all Survivor Insignias, a Major or Superior Rune of Vigor (which the Vigor Runes doesnt have the negative effects talking earlier of -50/-75 health), a Minor Rune of Spear Mastery on your headpiece (Resulting in +2 in spear mastery as your ideal headpiece in the future will give you +1 Spear (headpiece +1 w/ +1 from Spear Mastery Rune)), A Minor Rune of Leadership (to achieve an optimum balance of 12 Leadership to get energy back) and possibly a Minor Rune of Command or Motivation. Then suppliment with Runes of Vitae for maximum health. |

Another thing that is likely different then from WoW. Getting gold in this game is unrelated to killing foes and then dropping massive amount of direct cash. Getting gold in this game is related to killing things, picking up all the useless stuff they drop and then selling it to the merchant.
If you pickup armor pieces and such from ennemies and such, it is true that you cant equip them but if they are blue, purple or gold they can be identified with an identification kit. These colored armor pieces contain runs and insignias on them which can be worth big money! Always consult a Rune trader before selling a piece of armor. If a rune on the armor is worth 100g or so, it is not worth salvaging the rune as you are likely going to get 10g for it while the armor piece itself is likely worth more. Pickup all those white items and useless drops and sell them all back to the merchant and you will collect gold as you go! Materials are also another big commodity! Pick them up and store them in your storage! Not only will they help you to craft new armor but once you have enough, certain types of materials are always in demand by some people or you can sell back large amounts of less popular/more frequent materials to the Material dealer by bunches of 10. Rule of thumb for selling materials. See what you can buy them for, then see what you can sell some of yours for at the Material trader and then simply follow (((what you can buy for - What you can sell for) /2) = What people will buy for) but there is always a little Haggling Last edited by Zodiak; Apr 16, 2009 at 05:59 PM // 17:59.. |

Forget EVERYTHING. Create a new character which is an easier profession. Ranger / Warrior / Elementalist. Ele is pretty much boom boom dead mob in NM PvE, and Ranger + Warrior are pretty stable and easy professions.

But yeah, the free minor vigor rune is a good one to use right away, at least. And if you break the armor salvaging it off later...no big deal. That particular rune's worth more than the armor piece nine times out of ten. Quote:
BTW, I'm still fairly new to GW, having been playing for just under six months. I was absolutely terrible when I started. Now...well, I'd like to think that I'm a bit better than I was :P Getting the grips of everything can be a bit overwhelming at first but isn't too bad. Probably bumping this thread for no good reason. But since I actually stopped and read it I will add a few things.
Guild Wars is many games in one. Trying to tie it down to just one is impossible. Even PvE is multiple games. Pick one aspect that you like and go for it. The main thing that you need to do is ignore most of the discussion going on. Most of what you are hearing is discussion of players who have been playing for a long time, are maxed out on things and looking to achieve more. Don't worry about that discussion until you get close to where they are. As a new player, just play and enjoy. This game is meant to be played as a story. Do quests and missions and enjoy the story. After you have finished the story, then worry about all the little details in the discussions on the forums. The game is meant to be played with a group of between 4 - 8 people (party size allowed in various areas). Because not everyone can get a group together, they have provided henchmen and then heroes for you to group with. So put together a decent group of heroes/henchmen and play. If you can find a guild of real humans all the better. The power leveling you are hearing about is from players who have played through the game once and are looking to move their character through quickly. You will have low level armor and weapons until later in the game. Don't worry about this. You will equal out with other players later. Find out what items the collectors need to move up to the next level of armor and save those to trade up. Watch the weapons you find and trade up as something better comes along. Eventually you will have the chance to craft specific weapons to make them what you want. These will equal any of the unique greens that you will find. One of the goals of the designers of guild wars is to have armor and weapons that are equal across the board as far as stats go. This allows casual players to be competitive with hard core players. For skills, remember it is like a collectable card game. It doesn't matter how many cool cards you have, only the ones in your hand are what matters. So once you have a large pool of skills you can then try different strategies with different builds. Some people go through the entire game with a simple build made up of skills they acquired in beginning areas. Just a matter of play style. I love the PvE in this game. Have never really done much with PvP. In fact PvP IS another entire game within. It has it's own thinking and strategy. The great thing about this game is scenery. So put a group together, go kill things and don't forget to look around. my 2 cents Last edited by sighjordis; Aug 28, 2009 at 08:37 PM // 20:37.. |

I would suggest that you let this character wait for a bit.
You should consider making a warrior in prophicies, this is the slowest game and will teach you everything over time, thus allowing you to absorb the info. The game moves at a nice pace and difficulty ramps up very slowly. |
