I will stick at Guild Wars cuz it's got a great forum and the game is cool but I'd also like to get into a D&D style game. Last edited by Artemis2; Sep 15, 2009 at 03:31 AM // 03:31.. |

D&D: Ok, let's say the same situation in D&D : I have a level 1 Ranger. In D&D I'd adventure, collect xp and gold and go up levels getting stronger and better skills as I advance - a lot like GW. In the old paper and dice version you'd simply buy more adventures, get someone to 'Dungeon Master' and go adventuring with your mates. Sounds sad but it was great, harmless fun. So the game was kind of 'never ending'. You'd finish a character when he/she was level36, you'd become a Demi-God or rich. Player's choice if/when to end. The whole fun of the game was that at low level you'd fight muppetts like Orcs and stuff, higher on you'd be fighting Dragons, higher still and you'd be fighting Demons and running a Castle. I'm guessing that in GW, you simply play through the disc and it's game over when you complete the disc. Maybe I'm wrong. (I hope so). It's a great game but to me it seems a lot of work to go through a disc and have nothing at the end of it. It would be a better idea if you could take your character through all of the discs getting stronger, higher level, older and richer as you go rather than have to start all over again with every disc. (I have the 'Complete Collection'). Last edited by Artemis2; Sep 15, 2009 at 09:45 AM // 09:45.. |

Whilst there is a limitted number of missions to each story, and whilst you reach max level well before the last mission, that doesn't mean the game is over when you get to the end of the last mission.
You mentioned you had the complete collection. That means you have 4 involving story archs to work through, which you can do either on separate characters, or take the same one from story to story. Whilst you can stard a character in each of the main 3 stories, at a certain point in each you have access to travel to the continents if the other stories and play through the other story archs as well. There's explorable dungeons that are found in the EotN expansion (which you have in your boxset), high end areas like FoW, UW, Urgoz, The Deep, DoA or Slavers. There's PVP if that interests you. If you're after achievements there's titles to aim for. And once you've finished a story arch you get to unlock Hard Mode for that area, where you can chose to visit all the locations with much higher level foes. If you're after gold....well have a look at the high end auctions on this forum to get an idea of just how rich you can get. In truth you're not going to get the open-endedness of a tabletop game on any computer game, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to do. |

The difference to Guild Wars: leveling in GW is removed from the mainstay gameplay, you level from 1 to 20 as a part of the tutorial. Most of the game content is for level 20. On one hand, this means you don't have the satisfaction of '*ding* my character got more powerful'. On the other, this means that the emphasis is on gaining the player skill. Monsters in GW can go over level 30 (yes, thirty). When you bring them down, you have the satisfying knowledge that they went down because you learned to play the game well, not because some numbers in a database say that you can. Basically the game starts challenging and stays challenging, at least until you get really good - then it can get easy, but that's what PvP is for. Humans never get boring. Quote:
To begin with, any character can play in any of the games - once you reach certain cities, you get the quests that allow you to cross campaigns. Then there is hard mode - basically same storyline, but with much stronger monsters. Next, while each campaign has the sequence of primary storyline quests, which ends with 'congrats, you saved the world', you still have elite areas and quests to do after that. Not to mention around 1,000 side quests. Finally, there are also titles. These record your achievements and can be displayed below the name of your character. Gaining them can be anything from medium effort to monstrous, soul-sucking grind. The titles are basically replacement for level-based reward system. Although, be warned that the only people who get real recognition among GW players are the people in top PvP guilds, specifically those who qualify and participate in the monthly tournaments on a regular basis. I've tried several of these "free to play" games, but I seem to just keep coming back to Guild Wars. |

Mind you, as someone who has played all 4 chapters with the same characters I cant say that the other chapters lack challenge even at level 20, only the under-20 areas offer no challenge other then perhaps in Hard Mode. The new skills you can acquire in the new chapters will lead you to rethink your builds, this is the fun part, really, GW is more tactical and you will find that certain areas require learning new ways of killin'. If I look at my own skill bar now then there is only a single Prophecies skill on there today, it differs per class ofcourse. I hope you'll stick with GW though, its a really fun game which has an excellent 'shelf life', I've had it for 4 years now and I feel I have truly gotten my moneys worth out of it (all 3000 hours or so ) |

You can try Runes of Magic, another free-to-play game that is more D&D based.
http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html But I also hope you keep with GW. You will find that it grows on you. I have had all the D&D games (played paper/pencil ones when they first came out) like Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, and Neverwinter Nights. But I really enjoy Guild Wars' skills system rather than spending all that time leveling.
