Every time you open a particular chest and get something, that something will be of a lesser value than what you got from it the previous time. The length of time between chest opening has no bearing on drop values.
The link HawkofStorms provided explains all that stuff, and more! |

Like it has been said in here:
The first 2-3 times will give golds and decent money (usually, but the first time it's for certain). After that, it usually isn't worth the time and effort. My ranger, who didn't get past Kourna before being deleted, would check every month and get golds, even after the third time (I think I opened the ones in Istan at least 4 or 5 times each), but he had never opened all of them in the game, nor had he beat the last mission. |

you really need to read that link. you HAVE to wait a month that is the time it needs to reset it. and yeah the first few times you can get golds but after that you will get grapes. doesnt matter how long you wait 1month or a year if you keep doing it the money amount will go down along with the quality of the item. and sometimes you will get gems but thats more likely on the mainland ones.

Dear ccfrecc, you seem to take things a little seriously : after going through the whole nightfall campaign, you will have probably found about 100 gold items, which aren't worth anything most of the time. Buried treasures aren't even worth checking, cause they drop stuff that you can buy from the playerbase market at a relatively low cost. Once you will have farmed gold a little, you will understand that having interest in buried treasures that can be looted once a month or Istani low cost chests isn't worth it : there are some much greater and important things in Guild Wars. For the time being, I suggest you to level your Dervish to 20, finish the storyline (which is great by the way), and do some HM stuff. 99% of GW content is after lvl 20, in "high-end" areas (including HM) and titles. Believe me, level your derv and stop losing time on small questions like these!

I had several characters in kammadan and was able to be gold items from two istan chests five times on ~4 characters. When i progressed some of those characters throught campaign, drop quality went down, eventually getting purple in desolation chest when it was open first time. |

Possibly a little late as your question has been answered but just to chip in... I did start gathering some statistical drop research a while ago just running across my characters, but got bored and stopped after gathering only a little data. Link. Yellow indicates a Gold drop, Purple a purple drop (shockingly....), Red = ruby and blue = sapphire. Crosses mark where there was either no drop because the chest had been opened too recently or I couldn't remember what I got by the time I got back to town.
My Ranger was my primary character at the time and had opened the chest several times (around 4) more than any other character there. As you can see she got a lot fewer gold items than the other characters I ran. All characters were run from the highest end chest to the lowest end chest (starting in Realm of Torment and finishing up in Istani) This was done because of rumours at the time that the quality of drops diminished as you opened more of them, so I wanted to get the highest possible quality drops first. This wasn't the same phenomenon as opening (for example) the Mirror of Lyss chest over the course of 6 months, but rather that the order of opening the chests mattered. As you opened the chests each month the quality would go down with each successive chest opened. Note again: this was rumour, I don't think it was ever proven but is supported by the above poster. scratchdude is right though, mostly the chests drop junk. I've never had a "decent" drop from it besides a ruby or sapphire. Now a days I only open the chests if I'm going past them rather than purposely making a trip for them. The chance of droping max golds is determined by weather you are running Hard Mode or not. Its just like loot drops. Hard Mode will more likely drop you golds.

it's like you were asking if opening a chest in eotn has some secret value of retaining a lockpick than normal. it's all random. the fact that some people got purple items from several chests in a row proves nothing. the fact that some people got only golds, even when revisiting, with only few purples in total, proves nothing. it's just random. why wouldn't it? who really thinks that anet would waste more time and money to code a super secret algorithm for some free chest drops? it's must be something kept simple, as pure randomness.
the sole fact that i always break lockpick in echovald forest in nm while i had two chest runs outside boreal when i opened over ten chests with a single pick means nothing either. i'm much more curious about the reset thing, though. don't think it's totally random here - it should be connected to something, me thinks. i'm pretty sure that some other data in the servers resets as well, same as some machines have to be rebooted from time to time, even if we're not talking about a general, global maintenance of everything they have out there. any guesses why it's a month or month and a half and not two weeks, two months or any other value? as far as i noted, it's not set in stone - it's not always 30 or 50 days. usually something between. |

I'm hitting at about a 60% gold drop rate from these chests, but then again I don't check them every single month.

You can get a purple the first time.
I ran 5-6 chests on a few characters very quickly, then a character who had not opened a chest before (area around it was unexplored, so I am quite certain) got a purple from it . Seems they're designed to be tricky to farm. |

I have opened all 12 chests on all 10 of my characters at least 5 times each. From my EXPERIENCE.... what I have actually seen, not heard.....
1) waiting 31 days or more will allow you to get another item from the chest 2) repeated openings decreases the value of what you get. I got approximately 20-24 gold items from the 12 chests (2 each roughly) then I got purples. Once I got a purple from one, I NEVER got another gold from any of the chest. Even the gold you get decreases, basically after the 2nd openings. 3) although the drop of gold items diminishes, gem drops do not appear to decrease. 4) it doesn't matter which chest you open, the TOTAL number of chests opened seems to qualify the possible drop. Since the Torment chests have 'better' drops, it would be 'best' to ONLY open the ones in Torment, at least until the purples start showing up. 5) it is character based, not account based. So 2 different characters can open the same chest on the same day with no problems. |
