Far as I know, locked chests (ie, lockpicks only) are all the same and only change due to Normal vs. Hard mode setting.

well from wat i know there are only lokced chests in HM, except in EotN, there are locked chests in normal mode too, so im wondering, if i do HM EotN, will the retention rate still be 40%, or will it lower and be considered higher value than 600g?

The retention rate will go down to that of all other HM chests. HM chests drop better loot than NM chests (even EotN locked chests) and therefore will have a lower retention rate. I just now opened a HM chest in EotN with a 23% chance of retain (due to my titles).

Retention rate is also affected by your luck title and I think maybe your treasure-hunter title. Check wiki for the table.

in NM eotn chests count as 600 gold chests so your retention rate will be higher than if you opened them in HM. so in NM you get the bonus retention rate cause the game only considers then as 600 gold chests instead of the locked chest HM equivilant which would make the rate drop

Also, keep in mind tomes only drop in HM chests.

That's the main reason I'm still chest running in HM. Once I get elite skill hunter (might as well work on 5 titles at once (lucky, unlucky, treasure, wisdom, and skill hunter) instead of 4)), I'm switching back to NM.

It's better to run in NM if you don't want tomes. Since HM chests are higher level, the chances of a req 8 dropping are reduced compared to NM.

At least, this is what I was told a while ago by some people in the game.
