Given that GW1 is sold with a 'promise' of unlimited on-line play, plus the fact that they are still selling GW1 accounts, GW1 would have to be around for at least a few years after GW2 is released.
On the other hand, given the profit model for GW1, there is virtually no incentive for putting any resources into GW1 once GW2 is released (other than any maintenance issues). Keep in mind that other games, such as Everquest I, are on a monthly fee basis, so there is a financial incentive to add content to maintain subscribers. It's extremely doubtful that they'll even continue selling GW1 accounts, let alone adding expansions. Obviously, it would be more beneficial to add expansions to GW2 instead. (Assuming that GW2 is enough of a success.) I can't see too many people bothering to spend time getting titles for their HoM after GW2 is released (if it's even possible). Are you going to want to spend your limited play time working on cosmetic GW1 titles rather than actually playing GW2 (and working toward probable GW2 titles)? makes sense. its like how a big part of a community stays back in pre searing when theres a huge mass of space to explore but they choose to stay back. I think when we see the new, we tend to stay back for a while and adjust till we're ready. :/

Of course there will be expansions, not right away. Much will depend greatly on the success of Guild Wars 2. They can and will continue to make money world wide on Guild Wars because of their global popularity. I would have to say even more so in European markets due to the limitations and certain censorship that extend into Eastern Asia.

I would be really suprised if it does. The only people I can really see still interested in playing GW1 are players wanting to complete HoM points & those who have invested thousands of hours into the game & are not willing to move on. Otherwise, I think the community will move on as a whole. GW2 is going to be insane.

There won't be new expansions since GW is obviously a dying game so there aren't enough people who'd buy that expansion so it would obviously be a waste of money for Anet.
Also, even these few players that still play GW will most likely move on to GW2 so I can't even see how they're gonna keep GW servers up for longer than a year after GW2 is released. |

It is pretty much 100% they will not make another expansion. All of their attention is on GW2 and when GW2 is released, their attention will be on making expansions for GW2.
We will no doubt still see small content updates like WiK and WoC, but we will not ever see another expansion. Eye of the north was the last large addition GW1 will receive. |
