Basically Ive started GW and believe i have missed so much.... Too Much time wasted on WOW FML......

I really enjoy the game and paid for the GW2 first, but came here to learn the game so im not total NUB at it

.

Anyone have any advice, all ive bought is the trilogy, as i only have 2 months to get to grips with it, is there anything i NEED to know or NEED to do, ive been hearing about HoM points?

I just want to level up quick and get some neat armour and get the mechanics and lore of the game.

yes ive read all the other new players stuff but didnt seem to answer what im looking for

Also any guilds interested in helping me out? Also im a ranger, not sure what second proff is best, but i want pets!!

Hi there,

First off; welcome to GW

I would suggest that you start off with the entire prophecies campaign (the first one). To me it has the most intrigin story and it's a perfekt place to learn about the lore and the mechanics of the game.

HoM is located in the Eye of the North campaign (not a part of the trilogy). In HoM you can put your accomplishments on display and earn some cool items for GW2... But HoM's link to GW2 is made in order to award longtime fans and players. You can't just walk into HoM and get all accomplishments from day 1.

If I were you I would start by completing prophecies, so you can get the basic grasp of the game. Then - if you have time before GW2 launch - you could check out HoM. There are a couple of accomplishments that isnt too hard to get. For instans you get 1 point for having a level 20 evolved pet. But dont get your hopes up... 2 months is very very far from time enough to get all HoM accomplishments.

I will concentrate on getting as much game cleared for now, as i pressume if the day before GW2 released I could get eye of the north and used my stacked accomplishments right?

Also is there a way to choose what campaign to do, basically i got a trial account, playedfor 20mins loved it baught the trilogy, i didnt get much choices when i started on a trial account, should i start again or is there an ingame way of choosing campaign?

Hi and welcome to Guild Wars,
As you have trilogy when you first log in you can either make a new Toon (PVE) if

you do that you will have the choice of ethir starting in Proph..factions or Nightfall.
they all have the 6 core professions.....you have on factions a Ritulist and an Assasin also.......in Nightfall you have the option to create a Dervish or a Paragon ..so you have many choices where to make a toon.

As a WOW player you can look at it this way...Proph is slower and a long learning curve......Nightfall is medium ...Factions is the quick curve in learning.

So make a toon in each to begin with,Have a look at Guild recruitment section and see what ones are recruiting.

Basic info I know but many threads to show you how to make money builds ect and whats involved.

If you are having difficulty in learing ect you can post and I can join up with you to assist in any questions ect you have.

Try it first and then repost in thread if you cant get a guild then I can come along to guide you.

GW1 will not close down once GW2 is released so dont worry about that Anet has confirmed that servers will be liva as long as people are still playing GW1

I think i must of started in proph as you dont get a choice with the trial, but im happy the servers wont close, cuz i can play both. I will carry on on proph and finish it, then move on. I will be on later as im at work now, so i will post back later, thanks for all the help.!

I agree that it would be a good idea to go through the campaigns before trying to do anything else, but you may find it fun to do some campaign stuff and travel around a bit as well. The NPC Henchmen in the prophecies campaign are fairly useful if you choose wisely, but going to the Nightfall campaign is also a plus because it will unlock Heroes (basically henchmen that you can customize) which are better in the long run.

For ranger, common secondaries include Elementalist (for conjure skills to increase weapons dmg), Paragon (for increased utility and buffs), Warrior (for some better IAS skills) and Ritualist (for the spirits). Starting in prophecies will not allow you to choose Paragon or Ritualist right away, but you can get those later and you can change secondary profs in any outpost without losing the skills you've learned.

A few things you should know:
-- GW2 has completely different gameplay and it set 250 years in the future from GW1, so learnign the gameplay in GW1 won't help you with GW2.
-- Leveling in GW works differently than games like WoW. The max level is 20 and most of the game is intended to be played AFTER level 20. Anything before that is basically a tutorial on how to play, how to build a team, etc.
-- You won't have access to the HoM (or any of the GW2 rewards) without also purchasing the Eye of the North expansion (though you can probably find it for ~10 bucks at this point) so keep that in mind if you want the GW2 items
-- GW is not about gear, other than for cosmetic purposes. Everyone can get gear with max stats pretty quickly in the game (check the wiki for some good places to get max armor... Kaineng Center is a good one for prophecies characters with Factions and Droknar's Forge is another one). Rather than focusing on gear, you should be focusing on building your skill bar to work well with your team and to combat the threats of the areas you're in.

Captain Bulldozer has the most important point here!

GW2 is nothing like playing GW1!

Most obvious example is that in GW1 you can "click to move" while GW2 is Keyboard movement only.

They ability to play with heroes/henchmen creates opportunities to build teams design to get synergy from each other skills, while GW2 has these you do not control them at will (you must get a group or adapt to the players that you find around you)

In GW1 once you killed mobs in an area they do not re spawn unless you zone out in GW2 they will re spawn on top of you, (happened to me, lol)

ETC, ETC, ETC.

So do play GW1 if you like it but it won't really be that much help to being good at GW2, except maybe learn about the "spirit" of Anets mmorpg: Elite Items are cosmetic, your ultra, superior, blessed by the gods, forged in mount Olympus, 10million gold armor is no better than my 10k armor forged bye regular blacksmith.

Like said before you wont get any gaming skills experience for gw2. There are two important benefits for playing gw, when going to play gw2. The first is that you have the experience of the lore and places (like e.g. lion's arch wich is an important hub in both gw and gw2 but also knowing the story of ascalon gives more meaning to that area in GW2)

The second advantage are the rewards in the HoM (though those rewards are nice, I don't expect them to be extremely powerfull in gw2) but you need the expansion eye of the north for that.

So I would concentrate on the lore of the game wich is concentrated in the prophecy's campaign. Given that point I would recommend starting in prophecy's. It is the longest introduction, but it gives you the best inside in the lore thats important to GW2. As soon as you reach lion's arch however, I would recommend to get to factions and nightfall too. Factions give you max lvl armor and early access to skills and loads of lvl-ing experience (being reasonable experienced I can go from lvl 12-20 in 2 hours time with only 3-4 easy fights). HNightfall gives you access to heroes. However for completing campaigns I would recommend to concentrate on finishing prophecy's and maybe starting the free bonus content called war in kryta (though you need eye of the north to be able to finish it).

In GW2 Cantha (the continent where factions plays) will be closed off (no travel from and to there) and also nightfall area elona won't be visited

First off, Welcome to the world of Guild Wars.

Starting as Ranger in Prophecies is a good start. Completing Prophecies gives a point, having a level 20 pet is a point, being level 10 when you reach Lion's Arch lets you get MOX, a hero, also a point in HoM. These do not include points for linked accounts, and "any" statues. As you explore areas, don't be afraid to walk the edges of the map as you go. This will help towards Cartographer title (clearing all fog from maps). There are also many areas that have no quests or missions attached to them. Exploring is the only way to discover them. As you reach the Crystal Desert and the Southern Shiverpeak mountains, take a Signet of Capture with you. When you find a Ranger boss, capture its elite skill. This will you help you with the skill hunter title.

You can add points to HoM at any time. In other words, You can do everything that can be done in the trilogy, then buy Eye of the North, and add them all at that point.

Play, explore, learn, and above all, have fun.

Try changing to a less crowded server (upper left corner) the International distritc is usually pretty deserted. If that doesn't help then it could be something with your internet connection.

My american friend of mine has a poor internet connection and many problems playing on american servers, so he always plays on the international servers (it works for him, probably because there are less players on those servers). Maybe something worth trying?

I usually have a decent connection myself, but the last 2 days i have problems with my friendlist going "offline" and today i even get a "internet connection expired" message... i blame Anet for that (maybe stealing GW1 bandwith for GW2?). Hopefully its a temporary problem...

To answer your first questsion: GW2 takes place in Tyria... to understand the GW2 story and other stuff better i suggest you focus on prophecies (1st campaign) and the Eye of the North (EOTN) expansion as they both take place in Tyria. EOTN also has valuable info about the playable races in GW2.

The answer to both of those questions is that it depends on the player. Getting to level 20 may be done in less than 3 hours, and the second question has many variables.

Your questions don't have a definitive answer, which is why I said it depends on the player. It depends on the player because how you play will determine how long it takes to get to level 20 or complete missions and quests.

It's going to depend a little bit on where you play, and how. For myself, I can say that back when I was new, I got my first character (a Me/R) to lvl 14 in about 2 days... before realizing that was not a good character to play for a first time player. So I re-rolled a warrior and hit level 20 about 4 days after that (playing a few hours a night). This was back when the game was still pretty heavily populated, so there were plenty of people to help and give advice. The relative scarcity of people playing these days will possibly slow you down a bit.

If your looking for the fastest way to get to lvl 20 and start in prophecy's your going to need outside help (a bit).

1: get to lvl 8-9 in the tutorial part of ascalon and then leave the tutorial area. (should take bout 45-60 minutes).

2: in ascalon city post seering (so after the tutorial bit) ask in local chat for a run to lion's arch or ask in here (depending on how quick you find a runner, shouldn't take longer then 30 minutes, ask the runner to also unlock Yak's Bend.) See my note bout money below

3: When you are in Lion's arch travel back to Yak's Bend. Go outside and farm the groups there for experience. This should bring you to lvl 10 in bout 20 minutes. So in total we used 2 hours now.

4: go back to lion's arch, take the northern exit and you see a robot. talk to him and you get a message "hero unlocked M.O.X." (from now on called Mox)

5: go back inside and add the hero to your party.

6: find Firstwatch Sergio, take the quest Mhenlo's requist and do that quest (shouldn't take any effort).

7: on arrival in the cantha docks talk to the questguy, take the follow up quest and follow the path to a portal. your now in factions campaign.

8: you can take some time to get max level armor here and to get some nice skills to boost you up (again see note below bout money).

9: take all!! quests you can find but specially the one called a search for a cure.

10: fill your party with MoX and henchman and go out to the Budek Byway. You might want to wait for mehnlo's group to follkow you, or do it yourself with carefull flagging of your team. but if you go north-east you find a bridge with on the other side a guy with a quest (passing the buck). take that. Up some stairs you'll find some foes that after killing drop some capes (flag your hero/henchman cause your not strong enough yet or wait for mehnlo's group to follow you).

11: now map travel back to kaineng center. get reward for a search for a cure and take "seek out brother Tosai"

12: now use your map or ask some one to help you get to the marketplace outpost. It's an easy run without any fights that take bout 5 minutes (if someone does it for you run along and memorize it.

13: now go back outside to wajung bazaar and start following the quest passing the buck. after three steps out you'll find a npc with an update so back inside the marketplace. leave now into budek byway (prepared for battle). Follow the quest marker.

14: after the update move along, over a bridge (kill a group or three there) to the right over a bridge and wait for the talk to finish. Get this quest and do it (fight! the guy to savbe some bucks). now switch to the xunlai agent quest and do that one.

15: now do "feeding the hungry" quest

16: if you go back to the marketplace from that position you see a few red dots surrounding some greendots and in the middle a little girl. kill the red dots, flag your hero/henchmen and talk to the girl. unflag hero/henchmen and hope you are not killed (they will res you afterwards if you picked the two healers). now escort the girl to her father (follow the route you memorised at point 12) and get reward. kill the "drunken master"(see your questlog) and then do the quest "the afflicted guard" you should now have spended bout 2 hours and 45 minutes in total (depending on your own speed)

17: go to kaineng center, get all rewards and updates and go to marketplace. now follow and do the quest "passing the buck" and take all quests you'll get along the way. check your questlog all the time and do the ones that are nearby. DO NOT DO THE QUEST "SEEK OUT BROTHER TOSAI" (thats the one making all the dots green instead of red, you want to keep it that way till your level 20)

18: you might have to get some rewards and some follow ups in kaineng center but after a while you'll find yourself at lvl 20. Total time needed: well it can be done in 4 hours.

note bout money: most of the things described that cost money are good investments. but you need money really early. This is how to get it:
Make a pvp-only character. take the portal to great temple of balthasar. Talk to tolkano to register your acount (take the pvp-only character). then talk to the high priest then return to tolkano. You can now buy a zaishen key with tournament points. repeat that 10 times (that's the max). now press p and look for one saying wtb zaishen key. whisper to that person. price should never be lower then 5 platinums/key, but more in the direction of 6 platinum's per key. after selling the 10 keys to a player you'll end up having 50-60k. put it in your xunlai chest. This is account wide, so after your pve-character done the tutorial you can access the chest and take out the money (you need 50 gold to unlock it on a pve-character, so don't spend all your money till you've done this)
This trick can only done once/account so spent the money wisely. If you need any help with things I said just pm me here

In other words, You can do everything that can be done in the trilogy, then buy Eye of the North, and add them all at that point. Play, explore, learn, and above all, have fun.

GODh Jungle Guide Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: The Netherlands Guild: BFTW and DLRR	My american friend of mine has a poor internet connection and many problems playing on american servers, so he always plays on the international servers (it works for him, probably because there are less players on those servers). Maybe something worth trying? I usually have a decent connection myself, but the last 2 days i have problems with my friendlist going "offline" and today i even get a "internet connection expired" message... i blame Anet for that (maybe stealing GW1 bandwith for GW2?). Hopefully its a temporary problem... To answer your first questsion: GW2 takes place in Tyria... to understand the GW2 story and other stuff better i suggest you focus on prophecies (1st campaign) and the Eye of the North (EOTN) expansion as they both take place in Tyria. EOTN also has valuable info about the playable races in GW2.

akelarumi Wilds Pathfinder Join Date: Nov 2009 Profession: E/	If your looking for the fastest way to get to lvl 20 and start in prophecy's your going to need outside help (a bit). 1: get to lvl 8-9 in the tutorial part of ascalon and then leave the tutorial area. (should take bout 45-60 minutes). 2: in ascalon city post seering (so after the tutorial bit) ask in local chat for a run to lion's arch or ask in here (depending on how quick you find a runner, shouldn't take longer then 30 minutes, ask the runner to also unlock Yak's Bend.) See my note bout money below 3: When you are in Lion's arch travel back to Yak's Bend. Go outside and farm the groups there for experience. This should bring you to lvl 10 in bout 20 minutes. So in total we used 2 hours now. 4: go back to lion's arch, take the northern exit and you see a robot. talk to him and you get a message "hero unlocked M.O.X." (from now on called Mox) 5: go back inside and add the hero to your party. 6: find Firstwatch Sergio, take the quest Mhenlo's requist and do that quest (shouldn't take any effort). 7: on arrival in the cantha docks talk to the questguy, take the follow up quest and follow the path to a portal. your now in factions campaign. 8: you can take some time to get max level armor here and to get some nice skills to boost you up (again see note below bout money). 9: take all!! quests you can find but specially the one called a search for a cure. 10: fill your party with MoX and henchman and go out to the Budek Byway. You might want to wait for mehnlo's group to follkow you, or do it yourself with carefull flagging of your team. but if you go north-east you find a bridge with on the other side a guy with a quest (passing the buck). take that. Up some stairs you'll find some foes that after killing drop some capes (flag your hero/henchman cause your not strong enough yet or wait for mehnlo's group to follow you). 11: now map travel back to kaineng center. get reward for a search for a cure and take "seek out brother Tosai" 12: now use your map or ask some one to help you get to the marketplace outpost. It's an easy run without any fights that take bout 5 minutes (if someone does it for you run along and memorize it. 13: now go back outside to wajung bazaar and start following the quest passing the buck. after three steps out you'll find a npc with an update so back inside the marketplace. leave now into budek byway (prepared for battle). Follow the quest marker. 14: after the update move along, over a bridge (kill a group or three there) to the right over a bridge and wait for the talk to finish. Get this quest and do it (fight! the guy to savbe some bucks). now switch to the xunlai agent quest and do that one. 15: now do "feeding the hungry" quest 16: if you go back to the marketplace from that position you see a few red dots surrounding some greendots and in the middle a little girl. kill the red dots, flag your hero/henchmen and talk to the girl. unflag hero/henchmen and hope you are not killed (they will res you afterwards if you picked the two healers). now escort the girl to her father (follow the route you memorised at point 12) and get reward. kill the "drunken master"(see your questlog) and then do the quest "the afflicted guard" you should now have spended bout 2 hours and 45 minutes in total (depending on your own speed) 17: go to kaineng center, get all rewards and updates and go to marketplace. now follow and do the quest "passing the buck" and take all quests you'll get along the way. check your questlog all the time and do the ones that are nearby. DO NOT DO THE QUEST "SEEK OUT BROTHER TOSAI" (thats the one making all the dots green instead of red, you want to keep it that way till your level 20) 18: you might have to get some rewards and some follow ups in kaineng center but after a while you'll find yourself at lvl 20. Total time needed: well it can be done in 4 hours. note bout money: most of the things described that cost money are good investments. but you need money really early. This is how to get it: Make a pvp-only character. take the portal to great temple of balthasar. Talk to tolkano to register your acount (take the pvp-only character). then talk to the high priest then return to tolkano. You can now buy a zaishen key with tournament points. repeat that 10 times (that's the max). now press p and look for one saying wtb zaishen key. whisper to that person. price should never be lower then 5 platinums/key, but more in the direction of 6 platinum's per key. after selling the 10 keys to a player you'll end up having 50-60k. put it in your xunlai chest. This is account wide, so after your pve-character done the tutorial you can access the chest and take out the money (you need 50 gold to unlock it on a pve-character, so don't spend all your money till you've done this) This trick can only done once/account so spent the money wisely.
