Default Economy after GW2

Hi, I'm a relative new-comer to the game, just about to finish Prophecies. I'm also trying to get 20/30 HoM points, but I'm not sure whether or not to wait until after GW2 comes out. To any experienced players familiar with the GW economy, is it likely that stuff like mini prices and mat prices will drop after GW2's release, or should I try and buy all my stuff before release? The reason I ask that is I'm pretty poor atm, so I'm trying to make every platinum get me as much as possible.

Thanks very much to anyone who can offer any insight-I'm aware that no-one can predict what will happen with 100% accuracy.

If you're new to the game, and assuming you haven't bought gold, and you're only going for 20/50, you probably won't really ever need to touch the economy. The things that may go up will be things that require farming to get. So things for the armors and weapons (ectos, obsidian, rubies, sapphires, jadeite/amber, armbraces).

I think it comes down to a question of how much of that stuff is currently hoarded, and what the demand will be. Since GW2 will come out, the demand for most things will basically drop as I assume the drive to complete HoM will decrease as the desirability of the items in it are over-shadowed by GW2 items.

If a large amount of those resources are locked into accounts that don't log on, they're functionally removed from the economy. In theory, the loss of currency and the decrease in demand would mean a deflation of the economy, so it's possible things would become cheaper. *shrug* Again, I would say it won't matter to you unless you want to get above 25/50.

Hey Lokir, powerseller here to answer your question. At the moment, I'm not sure if anyone knows. It is possible that ecto prices might drop really low since less people will be playing and there will be less of demand for them. It could backfire the other way as well and prices might go up since less people will be on farming them. As far as things like weapons, those will probably go up even more since they require a bit more to obtain.

Like someone previously stated, you can get to 30 without spending alot of cash. If you still want to purchase some items, I would possibly invest in the weapons now. Ectos, I would stay away from. Mini pets are only obtained from birthday presents so they usually drop after the hype. I wouldn't invest in those right now since they are a bit overpriced due to people selling them for HoM points.

First of all, I already see prices going up. I've already heard that in two days time diamonds (for destroyer weapons) went up from 8.5k to 10k (not sure if thats material trader price or market price). I suspect that to go further in the next few days till gw2 release.

What is going to happen after that. Well none can know for sure. One one hand I suspect that HoM related prices will go down. on the other hand I suspect other prices go up. One thing is for sure; with the GW2 release the biggest percentage of people in the history of the game is going to leave at once. So the market will go funny!!

I'd think that you'd want to buy anything that needs to be bought for HoM now,
while there are lot's of people still in the game.

You can work on the non purchasable stuff after you've got the things you think
you'll need to buy.

From my point of view, I have zero motivation to sell anything to people that
are looking to buy for HoM. I've got some things for HoM, I might sell or give
them to friends or guild mates if I like their attitude. But as far as bothering
to sell stuff, when I've got all my objectives done, not interested.

When I log on now I just want to play the game and have a little fun. Not have
to deal with a bunch of "flea market tycoons" that think they're clever and are
going to get over on me. I'm glad that part of the game is over for me, I never
liked the whole "economy" aspect of the game.

I believe for the first month (or so) that there will still be a bunch of gw2 hom people trying to get that last few points---after that is over (halloween or so), the rest of us will go on playing as we always did-----rarely staying in towns to worry about the 'economy'. Yeah, sure it will be impossible to get some of the uber rare things (mkg, froggie, etc), but I think if there are sellers still out there trying to sell that stuff after the 'exodus' they will find a very very different crowd of buyer (eg--probably none at all).

so the economy wil continue to stay in the black hole its been in for a few years now--with very few of the remaining players caring about it at all.

The economy is drastically changing. Zkeys are worth way more than ectos now and I reckon that zkey price will keep rising while ecto price will keep falling. Soon there won't be any more "WTS X for 100e", it will be replaced by "WTS X for 100" or whatever amount of z or whatever abbreviation they come up with.

Thank you very much everyone! I think I'll probably try and get to 20 without spending any cash then, your contributions were much appreciated!

Like you Lokir i a new comer to GW (well actually i tried it 5 years back and couldn't get into it, this time I managed) so working on hom, i figuring 17 is very easy, and the last few points shouldn't be too difficult without spending lots of ingame cash.

I mostly agree. Prices for plenty of things have been on a stead rise for several years now, at least in part due to the population decreasing. With a lower population, certain items (those that are in highest demand and those that are rare) will almost certain go up in price, while a lot of other things will likely be unaffected. How high will prices go? Hard to say, but it will still be restricted by lower total wealth in the game, assuming players are still actually willing to let the price be determined by demand. Over all, though, you should buy your stuff soon, as the availability of things like minis will drop off pretty sharply in the near future.
