Default Skill Points - Save 'em or spend 'em?

I'm at level 14 and by now I've saved almost all my skill points because I read somewhere that later in the game they would be much more valuable. Hence I bought only 1 or 2 skills from skill trainers that I deemed very useful.

What do the vets recommend? Save skill points for later or spend 'em early in the game?

Heheh, I definitely suggest saving them... I have the eventual goal of unlocking every skill in the game, so I suggest doing every skill quest, and saving your points until the end of the game, not to mention if your guild or something needs a job played for Tombs, you can quick switch secondaries and unlock everything you need.

heh hey. are you talking about skill points you get and use to buy skills?

im not too far along (level 17) but i havnt found any reason not to use skill points to buy skills, unless i simply dont want to that skill becuase it seems dumb. but i really dont know cuase im not far enough i guess to tell if ive wasted them.

Truth is, you won't get enough skills points by completing the game to unlock all the skills. If you use up all your skill points on skills that you don't use just so you can unlock them, you will have to do some serious exp grind later on to get more skills points. I only bought the skills I wanted the most and had best chance of using in PvE. Once you start doing a lot of UW/Fissure (if you decide that) you should be getting a steady flow of skill points from leveling to eventually get the rest, though will be quite a good amount of hours spent.

Ha, I spent most of my skill points. A good trip to the underworld will give you a skill point of two each visit. I went the trough the game and did as many quests as I could find so I wouldn't have to buy skills that I could earn via quest though.

Please correct me and help me to do the math here:

There are about 70-80 skills available for each profession, right?

About 40-45 of these can be obtained through quests.

Times 2 professions per character that's about 66 skills for skill trainers and bosses (SoC), both requiring skill points:

(75-42)*2 = 66

When you reach level 20 you should have gained about 20-22 skill points through levelling.

66-21 = 45

Overall there are 25 missions available in the game, right? I assume every mission has a bonus, and about half of them give you an extra skill point? So that would be another 40 or so skill points as reward overall. That'd be almost enough to get ALL skills for both professions, provided you didn't waste skill points to buy skill that are available as quest reward. And I'm not even counting skill points that you get for further levelling above level 20.

Anyway ... I think I will continue to spend maybe half of my skill points now and keep half for later.

Quest whatever skills you can

some skills cannot be quested - just buy those

the downside of buying skills (beyond using skill points) is they get more expensive as you buy them
-- the prices increases by 10 gold every skill you buy

my elementalist bought more skills than she quested and shes paying for it
- the next skill I buy will cost me 480 gold
- I have 5 skill points left

I regret skipping quests for skills

experience and gold are easy to get but it's a nuisance to not always have the money/skill points to buy skills from a *new* second profression.

I've compiled a list of all "questable" skills. As far as I know this is the only list currently available on the internet that has ALL quest with skill reward.

EDIT: Link fixed

The link only works if you take the " off of the end .

Too lazy to read whole thread, so may have been covered already. SAVE THEM! heh.

Go check out the skills list and see which skills you will use in your setup and only buy those. Learn from my Mistakes, my monk hit the skill point wall right after I ascended.

If your careful you can have 8 skills for say a e/mo setup, then another 8 for a e/me setup, then another 8 for e/n setup, etc. thats what i'm doing anyway.

Use them only on skills you think will be useful. Like... don't buy anything related to BeastMastery and Pets (well.. maybe fertile season and symboisis).

Why don't they just make the Signet of Capture not cost skill points? Seems like it would encourage the capturing of skills which is probably closer aligned with the "normal means of play" which ANet intended. It would also get rid of the xp grind which isn't something a lot of people like or something that ANet said would exist. It's win-win.....someone tell me why this wouldn't work.

I say spending all of your skill points buying all of your primary profession's skills, whenever you have the chance, even those you don't think you'll use. Why? Because one day you may change your mind and want to try a new build but you won't remember where to find them. And you can't change your primary profession anyway. Plus there's always a chance dev teams may alter some of those skills to make them better or worse. But for second profession skills, only buy those you need. Just my 2-cents.

If your goal is to unlock all skills, its very simple. If there is no quest for the skill, then buy it. Otherwise save them and find the quest for that skill instead.

As for bonus missions offering skill points, I didn't think any of them did. Are you sure about half of them do?

Yes, get what you can from quests and then save the points for skills you really need and then after those just buy skills.. UNLESS you plan on farming solo with that char.. my farmer has more than 80 skill points as you get 168 exp per kill later on and at that rate you level quite fast so points aren't a problem at all

Nice work!! There maybe more quests that give skills... I don't know, just under the impression that all skills available from a trainer can be earned from quests. Maybe the NPCs are hiding in some areas.

Agreed -- many thanks, Tetris!!!

Also agreed that there are skill quests given at Ascalon Settlement. Both Farmer Dirk and Captain Greywind (sp?) give skills as rewards for doing their quests.
