An important port of being a leader that holds a group together, is having to do less popular things from time to time, like for example, kick inactive people. It's very demotivating to see people on the list who are never online. Right now in our guild we have a good 20 people who are all active. If you create good ambiance you will earn people's loyalty. it's not something you can demand, after all, it's a game. I have members in the guild who got offered to go to The Valandor and other high ranked guilds, but they sticked with organised spam, because they made a lot of friends here. Loyalty is earned by acting respectfull as well. The right sort of people you want to keep are the people that will notice and appreciate if you really put an effort in keeping the gang together. As a leader, or officer you should always try to make sure there's as little disagreement in the guild as possible, and act fair and friendly to people. Noblesse oblige, as the french saying goes, and though officers and leaders aren't nobility, in a microcosmos like what a guild is in that aspect, it does work like that a little.

What is important in the formation of a guild is a small core group of people who have trust with one another. This small group will slowly grow.

As guild leader, you need to have a strong support group in your officers. That means that when you have to make the tough decisions, you can go to them for input, and you will be more assured of a good decision.

Do not promote someone to officer just because they whine and try to convince you with words that they deserve it somehow. If they have to explain to you why, they are not worthy and don't care about the guild other than the power they might seek from it. That is the anti-definition of loyalty.

NONE of the officers we have ever promoted have EVER asked to be an officer. That makes them better for the position, because they have already demonstrated their team-player mentality. Because of this recruitment method, usually many other players have partied with the new officers, and realize their worth, and have no argument about it.

I think if you make your member happy they will stay, doesn't mean giving out ecto's or gold. And limiting the number of members helps too.

Our guild does what we can to help our members, but we dont give things away to new members. we will help them get something aak materials or a better weapon or help them with any missions/pvp they might wanna do.

We are organized and do many things together as a guild, thus ending most of the monotany of having to rely on PUG's for most everything or grabbing hench. if someone in our guild needs help, or is bored and wants to go exploring, or even just hang out in grotto or wherever, then usually there will always be a few guildmates to do whatever.

I think the key to having loyal guildmates it to come together as a guild. wether it be a pve guild or a pvp only guild. organize events and times to do things as a guild. if someone makes a good suggestion, then if you got enough people for it, then head out and do it. Help each other when needed. if you have a guildie thats stuck at say thirsty river, then if he asks for help, grab your guildies and go help your guildmate

LOL, That was wrong!

I had one case where this kid joined up and told me he was home sick from school. I rolled out the red carpet for him and he told me our guild sounded nice, and that was good because he had left a number of other guilds for not being helpful.

Hehe, I should have saw it coming! He left us that day!

That said, most of the original folks are still around, but we anr not quite as active at the present with work/school/family/etc.... I hope it picks up because we have had some good times together with GvG, and working on quests together.

Me and the other officers, as well as our leader, try to be friendly, as well as helpful to all we invite to our guild. Our goal is to have a family like atmosphere. I really promote guild chat, even when we are all doing our own quests and things as good communication is essential if the guild will last and prosper.
