Default Domination Mesmer Staff

I got a really nice, almost perfect, req 8 Dom, Mesmer staff in a drop. The only drawback is that it has a 20% Tengu slaying mod. Can I overwrite this mod? And, since I've never had a Mesmer as a character, either primary or secondary, what would be the best mod replacement? I want to make a really great staff in case I decide to build another character as a Mesmer.

The best mod for the staff wrapping is probably +5 armor / +30 hp / +20% enchanting. Depends what the mesmer is being used for somewhat, whether you're using a good deal of enchants or not.

Imho the +armor is superior to the +hp, you take less damage and makes a monk's job easier to return you to max health, staying in the back lines shouldn't bring you under 30 hp where the +30life mod makes a difference.

No offense, but, this post got moved from the place where the right people would see it and respond, to a place where hardly any of the right people will see it. The person who took it upon themselves to move it did not understand it wasn't about the staff. It was a campfire discussion about which mods were best for mesmers and a quick primer for me on what the mesmer profession was like. I got 2 responses immediately to my question and none since the move. I only put the picture in, after it was requested. I was afraid this would happen after I added it.

One more point, this question was about mesmer builds, which is something I know nothing about. That was the real intient of the question. Are there enchantments skills in a mesmer build? If not then a +20 enchantment mod is not the best add on for this staff. Do mesmers load skills that keep up their HP? Is the armor thin? If I knew some of these things I could make an intellegent desicion on what mod is best to add. Further, I needed answers on a specific type of mesmer, the domination mesmer, but, the answer is a universal one that could benefit all who are thinking about creating a mesmer character.

Well, your question sounded to me like what the best mod should be to improve that staff, not a "quick primer" on mesmerizing. But anyway, I would try to find a Staff Wrapping of Defense or Enchanting, it should overwrite the Tenguslaying nicely.

Defense = mesmers are targeted quickly, especially in PvP. Any extra defense anyway, like Avarre said, is better than extra hp.

Enchanting = extending enchants is always a nice thing too.

Here for the primer - I know I'll miss something because mesmers can be complex:

Mesmers screw with people, big-time. (If you play a monk, you probably know already what they do.) They shatter enchantments and hexes, they make casting hurt the caster, they make attacking hurt the attacker, they steal your skills or black them out, they echo their nastiest ones, they make your spells take longer to cast then they interrupt them and make you literally cry with frustration, they steal energy, they slice you up with constant armor-penetrating illusionary weapons, they snare you, they drain you.

Any more questions?

EDIT: There is another thread around here somewhere about why anyone would use +20% enchant weapon. Even if you're using Illusionary Weaponry (Enchantment!) for example, you can cast it while holding the staff, then switch to your sword. Look at the skills listings for Mesmer, right here on this site, and consider which enchantments you might like to last longer.

Depends on the mesmer build. I'm experimenting with an E/Me myself, and I've found that I don't use a whole lot of enchantments where a +20% would matter. For example, Arcane Echo is awesome, but typically you're going to cast your spell you want echoed before the original 20 seconds. Mantra of Recall doesn't seem to be an enchantment you'd want to prolong, heh, but Channeling would be nice to have around for an extra 8 seconds or so. I don't know how the Illusory Weaponry build works, so I can't comment on that one, but it might be good for that, too.

I've been focusing on Domination Magic with an intent to mix some Air Spike in there later, and right now I don't see a +20% enchantment helping me at all. Maybe for Air Attunement, though? Now, depending on your secondary, your mileage may vary. The post above from Avarre does makes a good point about the armor mod, so I guess I'd second that. If you're going to sell the staff, though, people seem to go crazy over perfect Fortitude mods.

Edit: I have been owned by Sofonisba!

Thanks Sofonisba!! I did want to know which mod was best for the staff. But, I wanted to make my own decision based on what I could learn about Mesmers. I've played, extensively as a Monk and a W/Mo, so I know their skill sets well. I know nothing about Mesmer skills.

I hate when the Mesmer strips my enchants and makes me more vulnerable to attacks especially in Fissure. Actually, I never really realized it was the Mesmer doing the stripping. I make sure that, as a Warrior, after taking on the Monk, I go after the Mesmers. Sometimes I take them on first because they are so annoying. There is nothing worse, as a Monk, than being stripped and having my casting slowed down to a crawl. One gets the feeling of helplessness, when you can't cast any heal spells and everyone is dieing around you. Your team, who is depending on you to keep them alive is swearing and calling you n00b. lol

I want to thank all those people who responded with info to my post and to those who sent me private messages. I learned more about Mesmers in the last 2 days, than I had in the 4 months that I've been playing this game.
