Default Need Class Help... (Me = Nub)

Hey guys... First let me start off. This is my first MMO since UO, so it's been a few years. Would of been playin' more but my P2 400MHz just wasn't cuttin' it. So I just bought a new PC. Anyways. I bought Guild Wars to hold me over until Vanguard comes out.

I've heard W/Mo is the best way to go but I know it's the most popular... I'm thinkin' about a Ranger but I've heard they're hard to start out with. I want somethin' that's not flooded but I'm not into the whole spell casting classes. I'll probably back up my Ranger w/ a Necro Sec. Pro. But I don't know. I know there's going to be tons of every class.

I'm mainly going to be playing with a group of friends, they just picked up the game too, and probably won't group with randoms alot and none of them are Rangers. So what would you guys reccommend? Just act like this is my First MMO.

(Sorry, I know this is a stupid question but I searched the forums and didn't come up with anything really detailed or anything that really fits my circumstances...)

Also, once I get the game up and running (Had to RMA Mobo) I'd really appreciate it if someone has the patience to meet up with me in-game and kinda show me that basics. Maybe run through a quest or two. PM me if you'd help a noob out.

Rangers aren't any harder to start with than any other class. They're very versatile, and useful in lots of situations.

Ranger/Monk -- The healing really helps.
Ranger/Mesmer -- My first character was a Fragility Ranger (it was awesome).
Ranger/Elementalist -- Sit back, pin down, and nuke them

Once you leave the newbie area (you'll know when it happens). I'll be more than glad to help you out on a couple missions (if you still need to) (that is, unless I'm in the middle of something important in which case you'll have to wait). IGN: Tsunami Rain

There are lots of helpful people here...and a few trolls.

But my first character was Ran/Mo. Great class to start with if you don't want to do a paladin build. WaMos get all the hatred, lol.

Play what feels best for you. Any combination has its strengths and weaknesses. After you progress a little farther you might change your mind. Don't worry you can always start over or change later on (much later).

I first enjoyed R/Me until late in the game, but didn't use much of the Mesmer skills. I was new then so I might use more of the Mesmer skills early in the game if I were to create a new R/Me. Anyway, I deleted her to make a R/N. I had a blast with R/N for the first half of the PvE storyline, then stuck to almost all Ranger skills.

Bottom line:
You can do almost anything you want as long as you enjoy it. The more fun you have, the better you will likely be.

I'll probably like the Healing best. R/Mo sounds pretty good. I don't know. I'll dick around a bit and see what I like. I guess before I get too far into the game I could always start over...

Tsunami, if you've got XFire add me; ighxsti. I should be playin' by the end of this week. Is there like a training/tutorial type thing in the 'newbie area'?

There are a number of quests that get you familiar with the game. They also give you a chance to try out several secondary classes before you settle on one.

I can't give you many suggestions on ranger because it an necro are two classes that don't interest me.

However R/mo's do have a little better energy than a W/mo (but no + energy artifact) so if you like healing a little it'll probably be better for you that way.

I don't know what other help you could need but if you have a question, you can whisper me ingame.

Ive played all classes, in all combos, and must say that I have the most fun with my ranger. Ive been all the combos of ranger... ranger monk, elem, necro etc. It really depends on what you intend to do. Best thing is to hang out in pre,(the tutorial part) and try out the secondary classes. Just remember that the secondary you choose can be changed later, so its not forever. I found ranger elementalist to be hard to use early on, ranger monk provided me with healing that I needed, necro is good but not so useful all the time, warrior Id not recommend as a second pro, and mesmer is nice as I like to interupt all the time. Also do some searching on bow types, and what you will need. Dont be suckered by green weapons and items, they just arent worth it. Oh... Sundering modifications are worthless...

Yea... R/Mo sounds pretty good. I'll want the healing.

What are some good bows to start out with? I imagine they give you a bow to start out with, but I'm not sure.

Of course you have a starter bow... and you dont need any others in the tutorial stages. Once you get into the actual game, post searing, you will have to get a good bow. There are weapon collectors, people who trade a weapon for items and some gold. Most times this is the cheapest way to go. Max damage on a bow... 15-28 is what you want, with some sort of damage modifier like 15% more damage when you have more than 50% health or even some have 15% more always. You can also customize your bow to add 20% to the damage. Bow types range from Horn Bow (slow fire/more damage) short (fast fire short range), long/storm (longest range decent fire time) and composite (mid range bow for interupting). I left a few out but those are you main ones. Bows have different designs, Mursaat horn or dragon horn, that will make them cost more. Bows like this are not sold from a collector, so you must buy them from a person or find them while fighting. All of this can be searched on this site or guildwiki. A good long bow might run you 15k or more, while a storm will cost you over 100k. Again it depends alot on your style of fighting. An interupter wont use a horn bow, takes too long etc.

added. The newbie area is called PreSear. Lets just leave it at that. I wouldnt want to give out free spoilers. Once you choose the option to "leave everything behind" You'll be in what is called Postsear. When you get to post sear, message me.

Guild Wars isn't a MMO

Ranger is very versatile, yes.

If you go Monk secondary, I'd say try Smiting, but I wouldn't know since I don't use Ranger much.

That's my suggestion, since you seem to be bent on R/Mo, and the others have taken everything I've got to say

First of all, 'noob' doesn't mean exactly the same as 'newbie' any more - it now means basically 'asshole', so 'newbie' is probably the word you wanted...

Anyway, any combination of classes is completely viable, and are all capable both of soloing and grouping. Don't let anyone tell you different. If you want an easy time, I'd however suggest you be at least part monk, it'll make most parts of the PvE much easier.
But really, just be what interests you the most.

What everyoudo, dont go wammo (W/Mo) They are the mist hated combination if classes of any proffesion, and expereinced players will look upon you with disgust.

In fact, i woudnt go warrior at all. Rangers are a really satifying class to play, loads of stuff u can do with them, really diverse inthings u can do, which is also their biggest weakness. Many rangers try to do too much at once, and as a result often suck. You will soon learn how to be an effective ranger. Becuase skills in the ranger line dont link as obviously as warrior or spell casters skills do its often bewildering to make ranger builds. But once you find a good build, you can interupt, deal good dmg, spread conditions, and help out the team far better than any wammo could.

All in all, do not listen to those that tell you wammo is the best, they just arnt. To start off with, i dont know, but i would much rather unlock skills in other proffesions than be called a n00b, and you wil be if you go wammo, daily. So, first bit of GW advise, look upon Wammos with pity. If you need to run droknars, what Wammos are for, you can change ur secondary at a leter date, but u may find that pvp is ur bag, in which wammos are about as useful as a chocolate tea pot.

For Q&A live, 1 place, 1 man: Frahma Yanman! ( my IGN )

I'll also add you to Xfire

and Rangers are cool! I still believe all missions in the game can be done with a full party of rangers ( also, insert any class )
