I would gladly pay $100 a year for 2 stand alone expansions. Also...They are optional...meaning that this game has no monthly charge.....

There is no monthly charge for guild wars. You purchase the content which you want and then you can play it as much as you like without any further charges or fees.

Please don't argue that if you purchase all the expansions that in effect you are paying a monthly fee. While its true that you can take the cost of the original game and each expansion and arrive at a cost per month, there is still no getting away from the fact that once you have purchased the content you can play it as much as you like for as long as you like and you are not obligated to purchase additional content. If you are paying a monthly fee then you have to maintain those payments in order to continue playing the game. If you stop making payments you lose your account and you are no longer able to play the game. The two methods of paying for content are very much different.

If we are talking value for money then considering that the game cost me around ??30 (which may be $50 or so) and the fact that I have spent over 3,300 playing the game over the last year then I would very much say that I have gotten my money's worth.

I don't think that you have provided any insight into the cost of guild wars as I believe the vast majority of players have already compared the cost of paying for the game in chunks to the cost of paying on a monthly basis. I think what you have provided here is just a rant.

I completely agree with Almighty, and this is the only way it makes sense to view it. Many games advertise their value as "X hours of play", and for me the 1st edition of GW gave me 1000+. That comes out to somewhere under $0.05 / hour. And if I decided to play more? That cost would keep decreasing.

*sigh*

1. If you don't send a cheque to Anet every month do they stop your account? No, you don't pay monthly, so therefore your title is wrong immediately.

2. If you do'nt buy an expansion, are you banned from the game or immediately useless? No, they're not necessary (except *maybe* for pvp, if you listen to some people). No one is forcing you to buy expansions.

Put it like this:
GW, 2 chapters per year at £30 = £60. Thats it. No CE, no extra char slots etc, base cost is £60.

Normal MMO: One game per year at £30 plus subscription (~£9 *12 = £108). This makes it £138 per year. Twice the price of guild wars.

Besides, using your reasoning I can complain any game is charging monthly. I've played Black and White since about 2002, thats around 48 months of play for £30... Damn you Lionhead Studios, you've been charging me £0.62 per month to play your game!

What about all the people been playing Diablo 2 and the expansion since it came out... man they must be really ticked, they must be paying about £0.30 every month...

Wow, some people will find anything to whine about.

This is a software product, of course they're going to charge an initial fee for research, marketing and development. Anet/NCSoft need to generate an income somehow, and their employees need to get paid, you know?

However, there is NO monthly fee, no matter how you warp and twist the expansion fees to fit your feeble point. There isn't even a requirement to purchase the expansions... That's a very far shot from required the monthly fees found in other MMOs.

Otherwise, it wouldn't be a Collector's Edition, would it? It's supposed to be very limited. However, due to demand, it's not as limited as it once was meant to be and they're pressing more copies as we speak.

I wouldn't say the "hardcore" players, just the impatient ones. Although, I did go ahead and pick up a normal copy just so I could get the shirt. Then it sat shrinkwrapped on my shelf in the bag with the receipt, so I could later exchange it for a CE. Patience, Grasshopper.

It wasn't a tactic. And as I read/heard, it was initially due to a production delay that the CEs didn't make it to the shelf at release. So it was out of ANet's hands.

Um...the "expansions" were never going to be free. It was known from the beginning that the subsequent chapters would be full-priced. Not sure where you got the $30 thing from.

So if you can provide any links, articles, quotes, anything of evidence for you claims in the OP, please do.

The main reason that people dont want monthly fees isn't even the money.

It's the whole credit card thing.

Look at Diablo II. It's expansion costed money too. The way this game works financially is very much like Diablo II.

I know of games that charge for the CD, and cost 20$ a month, and doesn't have 1/4 of the content, quality, graphics, and balance of GW.

My only complaint about GW is the huge increase of lag after factions came out.... When ch3 comes out, will the lag increase even more?

Hmm, im sure u didn't want that they would release free expansions? Ok they're a bit overpriced (imo, 50??? is too much), but people still buy it anyway.

A lot of work was put into making Factions. A lot of production. That much is obvious. And that costs money. Artistically Factions doesn't click with me like Prophecies does. But regardless of my favorite flavors, I was happy to pay for Factions. Think of it as a one time fee all you can play online gaming buffet. Help yourself to seconds and thirds.

If you want free, play Furcadia

I don't care who runs them... I play on the servers, and it lags. I want it stopped by any and all means necessary. I shouldnt have to tell my guild not to gvg today because of lag, that's sad.

And unless I heard wrong, we're getting a fullsize expansion (like factions) every YEAR, not 6 months. Every 6 months is just a large (free) update. Last years large update was sorrow's furnace.

So you wanted them to give us factions for free? And why would they lie to us about the factions delay... They get more money for bringing it out on time..... Sorry but i totally disagree.

My Point has been made,

I agree with the OP. I think the worgs in red silver one think that too much monies for giving good attack power to read all books in said school would be real neat since I'm 1337 and think that profit is bad for it keeps the common man or woman down and that is simply not fair as the dwarfs in the mountain have lost all respect for underwear since the trolls at certain forums need to come up with new complaints.

You heard wrong. The aim is to release a full-sized, standalone chapter every six months.

God... some people are so cheap.

"ZOMG I GOT TO PLAY THE GAME WITH NO MONTHLY FEES FOR A YEAR AND HALF THEY ARE RIPPING ME OFF! ZOMG x2 THEY ACTUALLY ASKED US TO PAY AGAIN FOR TWICE THE GAME! RIP OFF x2!!1"

Frankly GW's is one hell of a deal at $40-100 depending on what you bought for free play. Also like others have said, ANet is a company they kind of need this novelty called... money to make more content. And I'm glad to support that.

Uh... you don't even have to buy the expansions/standalone chapters to play GW. If you don't want to fork over $30-50 for a chapter every 6-8 months, you do not have to. Go and play the first chapter. No one's forcing you to buy another chapter. Compared to mmorpgs like WoW, you have to keep paying to keep playing.

Nice of you to insult us at the same time you're trying to get us to listen to your 'opinion'.

Nobody is forcing you to buy their product. So if you don't like it don't buy it and go play another game just like all the other people that whine.
