-Number one of different armors is just looks.
Have you met a mesmer, even a male one.
All mesmers have multiple armor sets just to change looks. I even played with a mesmer once that kept changing the armors (even combos) as we cleared SF.
-Two is for functionality, MM boots when MM, more energy when nuking or using high energy skills.

Last but not least, look in your closet, do you have one jeans and one T shirt only or you have more??

First an answer to an unasked question: Why do people have 1 armourset?
Answer: because they are poor or don't feel like having a full bag all the time.
These people will use an allrounder armourset like the GladKnights (80al+20vs phys+Energy+2 absorb) or the DreadKnights(90al+10vs phys+2 absorb)
These sets have no requirements, can be used wherever and whenever you want. They won't be good at everything, they're just.. ok

You see that there's already 2 basic alrounder sets.
Someone who has the DreadKnights will probably get the Gladknights for when he wants to make a more energy-intensive build. (Like a pvp shock warrior)
You then have 1.6 (only need 3 parts) to 2 sets.

ZerKnights(80al+20vs phys+ around 30hp+2 absorb) is for those warriors who need a boost to their hitpoints because they are facing enemies that do degen, can spike or because they want to carry additional runes. There probably are more uses for this.
This is the new unconditional armour from factions but I don't see it being widely used. Maybe it is being used but I can't really tell from looking at people.

Then there are the conditional armours.
SentKnights (80al+2absorb.... 100al +2absorb req13str) gives the highest possible defense for non-stance warriors but it requires 13str. (only rivalled by the 110al vs physical from LegKnights) If you don't have 13 str then the 2 basic sets will be better. The condition is to have 13str and therefore you can't always use this set.
If you have 13str or more (dolyakkers will have 15) then this set will be better than DreadKnights and arguably better than GladKnights

LegKnights(80al+20vs physical....90al+20vs physical while in stance) is for the stance tanks. If you're stancetanking then you can do that with the allrounders but you'll do it better with the LegKnights set since it will give you 10 extra al.
This will outperform the DreadKnights set, will arguably outperform GladKnights and will arguably outperform SentKnights if you are facing physical melee monsters a lot. For PvP, if you use sprint/rush/frenzy 100% of the time..

To be average, you can use one of the 3 allrounder unconditional sets.
To be good at everything you do, you'll need all sets.

You may have noticed that there's no pure knights set and that besause of gamemechanics. All other sets except the collector sets will outperform pure knights in every single way.

The first set you buy will have the helmets and the knight boots. All other additional sets you buy will only need the chest, legs and hands unless you use knockdown gauntlets.
So with 5 sets you'll have:
-Axe helm, sword helm, hammer helm, str helm, tactics helm, hex helm and/or glads helm with +energy but no super rune to save hitpoints while under major dp = 7 helms
- Dread chest, glad chest, zerk chest, sent chest, leg chest = 5 chests
- same for leggings = 5 legs
- same for hands+ KD gauntlets = 6 gauntlets
- Knight boots = 1x boots

Total = 24 armour pieces for Jack of All Trades 16 attribute warrior.

I just stick with the one armour 15k - Luxon - Dreadnought with Duelist Helm.

Works well everywhere with no noticable difference in both PvE, PvP with most other armours.

As for having one bit of knights armour for damage red.. i've fought plenty of them in PvP and they never seem to have the upper hand when it comes to damage control whilst smashing em with me sword.

I mean sure there must be some difference in all the armours but its so small its nothing ur going to loose sleep over.

As far as the energy boost is concerned with glads armour warriors really should not NEED that xtra energy (unless shocking) as alot of our best offensive moves depend on Adrenaline anyway and i never seem to run out of energy o.O .... but whatever thats just my opinion i guess ^_^

My Necro has three. One for SS, one for 55 farming, and one for Blood.

I keep my weapon enchancing runes on my helm (I've got one executioner+axe, duelist+sword, knights+strength, and a liuetenant's helm+strength), when it comes to hammers, the 100g at merchant isn't much during the odd time I use one--which has been close to never. I've got a full set of glads+knights boots, but also legionaire arms/torso/legs for farming (+vs. physical, +while in stance). Tbh, Tyria armors can't keep up with Cantha's.. one of the main reasons why I'm stuck between 15k Kurz or a set of 15k glads, even though I find the glads miles away better looking (and timeless ).

My monk alone has 3 different sets of armor for PVE/PVP and 8 scalp designs.

1st set is the astetics armor. this is my general PVE/PVP armor as its my all around armor and generally used for everything.

2nd set is a full health set in case im facing a spike or fast degen, it can help to give me/other monks a little more healing time.

3rd set i have is the armor while enchanted chest/legs and astetics hands/feet. this is my armor i will use whenever playing boon prot or bonder or any build where im having a maintained enchantment at all times.

Then i have a scalp design set both with all minors and with all superiors, again depending on build is very useful.

With my warrior i found it different as i only needed 1 armor set and its a mix set in 15k Kurzik. it uses the glads chest and legs, ascalon boots, and stonefist hands.

I have different pieces mostly for situational playing, so depending what im playing(blood\death\uw\55) depends on my armor... got to admit, its pain on space carrying the extra armor about.. but ive just created a "armor storage" character on my 2nd account to free up some space
