I was wondering if there was anything posted about GvGs. I am new to it and I want help with stuff like all the terms (ie gank) and what everybody is typically supposed to do.

Long Post Alert.

"GvG" is an Eight vs Eight battle.

Though maps are different (visit them from Lion's Arch on the boat), they all have the same thing in common.
1) A "Base" area for two teams. In the depths of this is the "Guild Lord" and his posse of Archers and two Bodygaurds. The Bodygaurds are Eles, but more importantly...they protect the Lord in a literal sense too - By healing him greatly. It is IMPOSSIBLE almost to bring down a lord when the bodygaurds are still up. The Lord also heals HIMSELF - based on the damage you do to him and the time in the match (he gets less and less as the match goes on)
2) A Flag Stand. Whoever controls this stand for 2 minutes gets a Morale Boost (which you know recharges skills, and erases some DP if you have it).
3) a Rez Shrine in each base that isn't governed by a Priest. Every 2 Minutes on the minute anyone that is dead is rezzed at their bases shrine - UNLESS - They have 60 DP. You are not auto-rezzed if you have 60 DP - this is called "Dp'ed out".

A "GvG" can be won in 2 Ways.

1) By taking out the other team's "Guild Lord" NPC
2) By bringing every player on the other team to 60 DP so they cannot be rezzed at their shrine.

In gvg's unlike HA you DONT lose if your whole team dies, you just wait to be rezzed at a 2 minute mark (And hope the other team doesn't kill your lord before that) - so it is needed to "Dp Out" the entire other team to win that way.

IMPORTANT: If the match lasts 30 minutes, then something HUGE happens called "Victory or Death". You have less HP and do more damage while under this effect, but MORE importantly, all locked gates open and cant be closed, and all NPCs except the Lord (even his bodygaurds) flood out of their bases and go to the flag stand. This leaves your Guild Lord COMPLETELY alone for 5 minutes. At 35 minute mark the guild lord will slowly start walking to the flag stand himself. Once VOD hits...the match usually doesnt take much longer.

General Strategy:
You'll always have 1 person designated as the "Flag Runner". This character does what the name implies...They run back to your base and bring the flag to the stand and "Cap" (take control) of the Flag Stand if the other team gets it. The point being is that you want to take it before the other team has it 2 minutes - denying them a morale boost, and you want to hold it for 2 minutes if possible. Since the Flag Runner is USUALLY not in the main fight, they are usually a setup that will get people off their back quickly if they are attacked coming to you. Two popular choices are Eles that Blind and/or Slow down people, and A "CripShot" Ranger - that does just that - Cripples people that try to beef with him.

The "Main Fighting Force"'s task is to kill and push back the other team (which keeps the stand under your control and eventaully you'll push them into their Lord and eventaully take him down).

THERE IS ANOTHER POPULAR WAY THOUGH. Called "Splitting". This is where a number of the team is "offensive" and the others are "defensive". The Defensive team is to fight the other team at the stand (And as their name implies, they are more about surviving than killing the other team) while the offensive team sneaks into the opponent's base and kills their NPCs and (In a perfect case for them) the Guild Lord too - while the opponents are busy with your defensive team. It is important for the Offensive team to know when to pull out and come back to the fight if the other team senses them there and comes back.

You mentioned a "Gank" attempt. There are 2 cases where this word is used that relate.
1) For a Split team, A "Gank" means when the split ("offensive") team trys to kill off the other team's Bodygaurds and/or Guild Lord by themselves.
2) After VOD, remember that the Lord is by himself. It is a popular strategy for some (or even ALL depending on the situation) of your team to try to get to their alone lord and kill him before they can get back to protect him.

Ganking in the first sense, before VOD, is something that Anet is always trying to make harder. They added the bodygaurds so you have to kill them first, They gave the Lord his Amulet of Protection (what lets him heal himself), They gave the archers in the base Pin Down, they recently twicked the Lord's Amulet to react more harshly to Life Stealing skills so "Touch Rangers" couldnt gank easy, etc.

ADDED: Extra info.
1) You always use the map of the lower rated team so they have "home field advantage" as it were - Since they are used to the map and the home base on some maps are better positioned than the opposing side to give them alittle boost.

2) On Maps with Catapults (Like Warrior's Isle) the depth that add should be WELL noted, as if repaired and soht, they will 1-hit-kill ANYTHING that is un-protected (like Prot Spirit or Shelter) in their blast radius (IE: They are MUCH more dangerous than the PvE catapults the dwarves use). This also means that after VOD you must watch that the catapult into your base doesn't get lauched because it will probably kill ALL your NPCs that are walking out.

3) Like the catapults, use the map to your advantage. Some maps SCREAM to be to Split on (there are multiple ways into a base, the maps are bigger so it takes longer to get back, etc), and some maps have quircky little things that the opponent might not be used too that you can use in your strategy (like the Miasma and Obelisk on Isle of Med.)
