Apples and oranges. On that note:

Guild Wars is more about skill combos and making all your skills synergize with each other. World Of Warcraft is more about aquiring the best equipment possible and killing people that way.

I prefer the fast-paced nature of Guild Wars over a massive grind. My friend, on the other hand, prefers to develop his characters and give them backstories, ect.

WoW's graphics gets a little better with higher settings, though you just get used to them over time anyway.

As for PKing, as long as you don't have PvP activated or playing in a PvP server then PKing never happens.

Yea, I think WOW got better graphics and that on high and some other stuff, but still, not even to make me pend 15 bucks a month..

i prefer wow even though i havnt much time to play it. when you can do several hundred man raids on cities i think that just destroys anything in gw which was good pvp wise imo.

gw is quicker
gw items suck imo

wow items and armor are awsome
wow pvp awsome
lvling slow

i bet some people posting here havnt even played wow.

WoW is very... polished. The game have little things like armor preview on vendors, diferent attacks moves on diferent races (a orc using a axe will fight diferent from a human doingit).

You can swin, go almost everwhere and the mod comunity is very strong, adding some very useful features the normal interface lacks.

The game is VERY full of a LOT of little things, however, he have some basic, inherent flaws.

One its the game is very easy... this leads to people playing solo, which turn the game on a single game with a chat interface.

Then you have instances, and raids.. which *requires* 5 or more people. On GW I can always grab as many friends I want and use henchmans (and now, heroes) to fill the gap.

And, imo, the worst thing is.. a "big" part of the game is raiding, which deserve a paragraph alone.

On raids, the enemies are elites, and outside having more HP, more armor and punching for a lot more, they are immune to LOTS of skills.

For a quick idea, imagine if all bosses on GW were immune to blind, dazed, cripple, weakness and knockdown.

On the end, while you can enter a instance with all your skills (diferent from GW 8), you end up using only a small selection of then. And using the same skills over and over grew old after a while.

So, while WoW is bigger and more polished, it goes narrowing more and more on the end. When you are on the cap, with good weapons and armor, the game turn stale and there is actually little to do.

2 last words who anyone who played WoW problaly dislike: Grind and time sinks.

So, I vote for GW.

I used to play GW a ton....1000 played hours

I then went to Wow and played it a ton, even fought up to rank 11 before patch.

How do I say they compare?

I argue about PvP on WoW forums often, WoW is NOT I repeat NOT a skill based game. WoW players refuse to believe this. It is about who has the dominate class with the better gear in givin situations. For PvE...WoW is king, for PvP and a sign of true skill vs. another player, Guild Wars dominates so much it is not funny. It is absolutely impossible for GW players to cry about class imbalance cause GW players can instantly make that imba class. Also the best gear in GW is simply the most sought after gear...Peopel still yearn for their FoW sets, cause it is a way of saying to others "I made it, I played a long time and dedicated myself." The armor is only for looks, the FoW armor is just as good as anything else. Not so with WoW, very few have teh time to live in WoW to get the tier sets.

I have seen many tier 2 players have zero clue on how to play the class in PvP, yet still win cause of the armor only. WoW is about gear and classes. A mage vs. a warrior in WoW is no contest, GW a warrior has a chance vs. an Elemental. GW class balance should be worshiped.

Both are awesome games

PvP? get GW

PvE? get WoW and roll on a PvE server.

WoW. Why? It's so god damn fun! 50v50 PvP, huge PvE world to explore, mounts, cool weapons/armor, and you can't beat 100 man raids etc.
Alot of people bash WoW for it's graphics, but in a way i think they are really cool, it looks alot like a MMORPG version of Warcraft 3, and I feel the developers made the graphics like Warcraft 3 for the "Warcraft Experience".

On another note another reason I got it is my GW account got hacked, my characters gone, and my gold. I had a warrior with FoW, all skills etc., and as soon as I saw him gone, I left, so unless anyone gives me my 1.2 mill back, I won't be playing guildwars, maybe when the expansion comes out I will.

I was both a PvPer and a raider in WoW, and I'll try to keep it simple.

Edit: Apologies on the novel.

PvP- GW. Hands down. Difficulty is there, fun is there, teamwork is there. Most of all, a character started two weeks ago has nothing over a character started two years ago.

Nitty gritty

Class balance:
WoW's classes are balanced, people don't know how to counter. I played both a horde Warrior and Shaman in endgame PvP and PvE. There is no "KILL ALL" spell, a mage is a powerhouse of DPS and should be approached through the fact that they can't take heavy hits.

GW's classes are balanced and people know how to counter. GW has an incredible balance, much moreso than any other game, but this is because it was created with the mindset that PvP will carry it.

Styles:
WoW runs several different instanced PvP methods, but the real fun was the raw brutality of the conflicts at hillsbrad and the plaguelands. Before instanced PvP we would set up raid groups and duke it out for hours, days, even weeks. It was fun. Why? Because we ended up becoming friends through this, we'd give our respect to them and they would return it wholeheartedly. Instanced PvP ended up killing this. Turtling, AFKing, anything that would be considered a foul move would instantly drop whatever respect you had for that player, it wasn't fun, and it wasn't very personal.

GW? Several modes of play, several methods of turtling. I simultaneously love and hate GW's PvP. The advent of gimmick builds and even gimmick team builds brings the quality down a bit, but it remains the same as WoW's instanced PvP, it's so impersonal, especially RA/TA. Teams will break up as fast as they're formed, whereas with WoW you tend to stick with your current group. GvG's are a different story, I don't have much experience here and would care not to, so I'll save it to memory.

PvE- WoW wins PvE in two respects, and loses in two as well. WoW is very personal, strong bonds are created among raiders and people who party-up. They're allowed to go different routes, shadowpriests are acceptable and DPS warriors are permitted as well. Downsides are the very steep grind, and very 'Exclusive' nature of raiding. To have the best, you have to be the best.

Nitty gritty

In WoW you have 40 man raids, 20 man raids, 25 man raids, and 10 man raids, 5 man parties, and most of all: No henchmen. I did MC, BWL, AQ, and Naxx all when they were new, I ran with my guild, everyone had to be on top of what they were doing or we would wipe. We were the first horde guild to head through these dungeons, we were cutting edge and I'm proud of each accomplishment we've made. Not because of being the 'First' but because of the amount of unity and cooperation that it required. Each boss was a mission, we would work as a team, a large one, but still a team, to work to the end, spanning weeks at a time and grinding countless hours for rep/cash to fund it.

In GW, I find 8 people to do a mission, get to an elite zone, find 12 people to do a mission, they give up when we wipe, and I repeat until we finish. Each encounter is the same save the final bosses of elite zones, it's well, boring. There isn't much teamwork involved, Monk, Tank, and DPS can pretty well handle anything it throws out there. There's very little bonding between these players, and very little that really lets a person shine. In WoW you could say "Oh <Mage> has such high DPS we shouldn't put him on sheeping duty." it's simply "U suk" followed by a map travel. GW is low grind and low stress, easy peasy PvE.

As a whole- I'd hate to be indecisive here, but I'm going to have to be. The two games are designed with different intentions and are thereby subject to the idea that if one truly wanted to compare them the results would be inconclusive. Usually a thread or discussion about WoW vs GW ends with a person who hasn't played enough of either game arguing in circles.

WoW was not made to compete with GW, and GW was not made to compete with WoW. Should either of these be true, GW would have a higher grind, higher population, higher PvE payoff, and much higher difficulty. In turn, WoW would have a much lower grind, higher PvP payoff, and much more of a focus on "Bread and butter" or gimmick builds. They are different beasts, and they will remain so.

I loved WoW- now hear me out on this, I liked it because I enjoyed the folks that I was playing with, and I loved going to places like MC, BWL...the fact that you can see 40 or so players, from different parts of the map, band together, and see what the output was. Yes you can do that in GW- but WoW had its merits too. Now what got me to stop playing WoW (and I mean stop, sharded my purples, gave my gold out, uninstalled the game, and then cracked it inhalf!) was you were right, it eats up way too much time. We had raid times that near the end felt like it was a second job, and not a game. Plus I found myself spending more time on the game, then with my family, and that too is a big no go in my book. GW is at an easy pace, that I like, where I feel that Im not pressured to be there in every free moment I have. Plus Im in school now for the first time in about ten years, and I know that if I was still playing it, my grades would suck (A, A, A, and a B so far woot!) and I would get kicked out. And no one can dispute the fact that GW is a FREE on line game, and the fact that the updates doesn't kill the servers is a plus in my book!!

Are you serious?!?!?!?!

On sales alone WoW has sold more copies than all three of Guild Wars!

So yes, WoW could easily survive as its still in the sales charts and is every frakin' week compared to guild wars, especially as Nightfall was only in the sales charts for 2 months...

Oh and most places are selling guild wars for ??15-??20 pounds now aswell.. and rememebr the price you see in the shops IS NOT the amount of money the company recieves from the game, they may only get ??10 if they are lucky due to the other costs for packaging, distribution, etc!

the only time that NCSoft/ANet get to see all your money is if you buy the online version for ??24, which I think is a good bargain even though you don't get the box, etc and if it wasn't for Play.com selling them all brand spanky for ??18 on release day, I'd have bought them from the online store instead of buying a boxed version, honestly, how many people bought the normal edition boxed because of the manual

I was kinda off on the number of players. Turns out it was 6 million but should increase with the release of a Spanish version. If they release a Latin American version (which they havnt mentioned yet) I would imagine the number of players will go waaay higher.

I have played World of Warcraft, and Guildwars - Both to "end-game" status.

World of Warcraft: I had a level 60 Warrior and a level 60 Warlock (both pre-expansion) - so i've experienced a lot of the game and can give my opinion without lacking knowledge due to having no max level characters or being in a real raid setting for way too many hours that I wish I could forget.
  • Easy to play. Too easy. Easy as in "The game holds your hand the entire time, from start to finish."
  • It's more about community than Guild Wars is, in the sense that being in a Guild actually means something. Unlike Guild Wars where people make a guild just so they can see its name in the HA winning messages.
  • Instances are fun the first or second time through. After that, it immediately becomes boring and plain.
  • The cartoony art style fits the game nicely, but everyone ends up looking exactly the same in a high-end guild raid.
  • At level 60, or more currently, level 70, the only two things left to do are Raid or PvP. As PvP is more of a tacked on, glorified mini-game in WoW than anything, it serves little purpose. Raiding requires many people to be active and hours upon hours of your life dedicated to being in your chair a few times a week (for some guilds, 6-7 days a week @ 3 - 6 hour stretches)
  • Gear is 100% of your characters potential skill level. Equally skilled players (in WoW, this just means they know their own class skills) where one has epics and the other has blues & greens will result in the same outcome: the epic player will always win. If you don't have a life to throw away and devote 20 hours per day toward building your character, you won't ever be as good as the people who are.
  • Mounts. You finally get one at level 40, which unless you're using a quest-stacking guide to power level, will take you quite a while. This is the most annoying part about WoW at first. Especially when you start getting into the 30's and see other people riding around to the same instance you're going to because they're a few levels higher than you are. Walking sucks. Period.
  • Air travel and Hearthstones. Slow. Zepplins take forever to arrive and depart, Wind Riders suck (10 minutes from Tanaris to Everglade Terrace [or w/e it was called]... F that.) This is such a boring aspect of the game. I've literally done sets of push-ups / crunches during flight times before, only to finish and still not be where I need to be. Hour long resets on Hearthstones. THAT TOTALLY MAKES SENSE =/

Guild Wars: I have 10 level 20 PvE characters, my Warrior is KoBD, all have vanity armor and too many high-end weapons to note. I've PvP'd and PvE'd for a good length of time. I have NOT gotten into HA, because honestly, I can do without the jerks who require a certain rank just to join a freaking Iway or Vimway group (pre-nerfs)
  • Level 20 is the maximum level and is attainable in a few hours if you know what you're doing. Hitting the max level so early takes the grind feeling right out of the game, mostly because you never get the chance to feel like you're spending so much time trying to level up and not enough actually playing.
  • PvP is just as big as PvE. Both have deep systems they adhere to with a strong playerbase clinging to each.
  • Gear means very little in Guild Wars. In the end, it's mostly vanity items that players care about, as you can buy the best stat weapons from merchants, and with a few extra plat, can outfit yourself with a perfect weapon. This is attainable at level 1, and since nothing is "soul-bound" unless you customize it, you can keep the same weapons for every character on your account and swap them freely.
  • Guild Wars is not about the community in the slighest. Sure, if you're in a close-knit guild, it'll feel like this isn't true. But, if you leave that guild, you're wandering around a world where people couldn't care less who you are. They just want to do their missions by themselves, or only want you because you're the class they need to fill an open PvP slot with the build needed. This is by far, the worst aspect of Guild Wars.
  • Zoned maps. It's really a mixed bag. Personally, I appreciate this aspect because I hate campers. I hate going to a bosses location to finish a quest only to find 20 other people sitting there in a party, continuously killing this boss because he drops something that sells for a lot of money. Hi, Everquest.
  • Very very very deep skill setup. No one HAS to play the same class, use the same skills, or utilize the same weaponry...even if they're both Warriors. You can change your secondary and open up a whole new array of build possibilities. This keeps your single character fresh for a very long time as you never feel like you're doing the same thing regardless of where you are. (sunder, sunder, sunder, sunder, taunt, mocking blow, sunder, mocking blow, shield bash, taunt...)
  • Unfortunately, if you aren't into PvP and you get the 3 protector titles / exploration titles...you aren't left with much to do on your character. You can go for a title, or go farm. Treasure hunting is fun until you start getting Carpal Tunnel from holding down Alt. Farming used to be fun, until they nerfed it again and again.

I chose Guild Wars over WoW, even though anymore, I don't play either. So, really, it just depends on how much of your life you want to look back on as time spent staring at a screen rather than improving yourself in some way.

Also, realize this before getting into a game: the things you do in this game will not affect your life in a positive way. No one in your immediate family will care how many max level characters you have, what items you've gotten, or which titles you can display. Neither will girls, or guys (if you're female). Your boss will thank you for getting a decent night's sleep and performing well at your job (or if you're a student - your teachers will thank you for passing class, and not passing out in class).

Well I used to do a Paper Route and only made 10 dollars a week. Sure, Made be enough to pay for it, but still, it adds up over time..

And yes I played WoW for about a week, and I couldn't stand it anymore. I would literally fall asleep at the keyboard after about 30 minutes.

I used to play WoW. I did play for a long time, 1 1\2 years. I played it, back in November '04 during open beta.

Its not a game. Its something to do for an escape. I dislike people who roleplay. I want to play a game, not an alternative universe for people who want to waste their lives away. I'm being blunt but a lot of WoW players refuse to see how much the game is consuming them. And then they laugh on how crap GW is without even playing the game.

But what Nickhimself has said, I would agree with. Its a very time consuming game that requires you do to do time consuming things, mostly farming, so you can do content at the end-game. Its like saying a tank needs a sundering 20\20 +30 HP fellblade so he can do some elite missions in Nightfall. You need curtain items to do more content which takes a lot of time, extreme amount of time to do. And then! you need 40 people online at the same time, so you can raid for better items.
