They need are the best if they can Interrupt or something or splinter dmg and do huge dmg... lots of times you can use them but farming is a bit harder with them...

Additionally, a Ranger has the highest armor vs. Elemental damage of any of the professions. Another feature of the Ranger profession is the ability to tame a pet to aid you in combat. Because of all this, a Ranger can fill in many gaps in a party. The patron goddess of rangers is Melandru.

The Primary Ranger's base armor provides moderate protection. It has 70 base armor and +30 Armor versus Elemental attacks, +5 Energy and +1 Energy Recovery. A starting Primary Ranger can expect to have 25 Maximum Energy and 3 Energy Recovery.

The Ranger's primary attribute is Expertise. Expertise alone can merit using the Ranger as a primary profession, even for builds that do not use many Ranger skills or bow attacks. (e.g. the Touch ranger)

Ranger generally, with a few exceptions, have one of 2 roles in most parties.

First they are interupters, they spam skills like Broad head Arrow and Distracting Shot.

Second they are AoE dmg dealers with Barrage + Splinter.

I'd point out trapping and Edge of Extinction as other very common reasons to include a ranger in a party. Trapping allows the spreading of many conditions and pre-loading of damage, particularly effective if a tank can pull a group together into layers of pre-laid traps. Edge of Extinction works well with diffuse AoE to kill masses of typed foes. Edge puts out an awful lot of damage for the energy cost.

What they said also, it depends if your a ranger in PvP or PvE, when the role can be different.
