A spear is a good idea for a caster martial weapon, unless you're playing a PBAoE build or Sliver Armor build. NF has a +5e, +30hp, and +20% enchantments spear you can get, and so a shield would be a good off-hand for that.

Why a spear? Because if you're using a Totem Axe, and hit the space bar to attack, you move to melee range of your enemy. A spear, however, will let you stay at the mid-line. As a caster, your'e using it for the mods anyway, not really as a weapon, so why get into melee range unless your build calls for it?

Edit: sorry, my bad. It's a +5e/+20% enchantments, shocking spear. Don't know where I got +30hp - wishful thinking? Spirit of the Forgotten. You can build one from collector Hamri for 5 Cobalt talons, perfect Spear grip of Enchanting, and put on a spear tip of your choice!

And where may I find this tripple modded spear, especially since a spear can't have +30hp and 20% enchants. I'll buy one in a heartbeat.
