Default Which Guild Wars to get?

I'm new to the GW world. But I'm limited on cash. I'm wondering, in your guys' opinion, which game is the best for my buck. Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall. and I might, just might be able to scrape enough to get the platinum edition that comes with prophecies + eotn.

Which do you guys think I should get?

I'd say you wait for GW2.

I would go with the Platinum Edition.

You get Prophecies. Many skills, easy game, nice for a beginner, long storyline.

You get EotN. Heroes, dungeons, and consumables. Nice graphics too.

I know this will cause controversy, but I say buy factions because it is the easiest one to get into. I bought prophecies when it first came out, but really never got into Guild Wars that much until factions came out. Granted, Factions probably has the least amount of content compared to the other two campaigns, but in my opinion is the best for beginners to better understand Guild Wars. By the time you get done with it using a few characters, hopefully you might have more cash for the platinum edition.

I strongly suggest Factions because I am sure I was not the only one who hated the grinding in prophecies.

Speak for yourself. I mean it in my post.

Or maybe I should lie and give out some phony, cliche idea like "Get Nightfall, it's the most polished one" so that some of you can go "Prophecies is better" on me?

Please.

Lmao. I know I didn't ask that, but I guess that I'll tack that on.

If you guys think none are worth getting until GW2 then let me know. Gimme some info if you can, I know very little about GW besides the trial I played of Prophecies. It's funny the first 3 posts are 3 different answers, looks like this isn't going to be as one-minded as I thought i'd be. LD

Edit; Ugh, horribly typed that one.

I don't think you are the only one. I've beaten Prophecies with only one character (in nm and hm) and I just can't find any motivation to do it again. I've beaten Factions on all three of my characters (only nm for all three, but nm and hm for my main one) and still am not bored of it. I personally prefer the look of Factions' areas to the look of the Prophecies' ones (I absolutely hate Maguuma and the Crystal Desert).

I do, however, hate the "rush, rush, rush" feeling Factions made popular with the mission rewards being based on completion time. That is my major gripe. I know lots of people hate the "faction grind" but I do every quest with every character anyways, so it had no effect on me. The locked gates are annoying though, as I prefer to explore and not follow the direct path (which was a good thing about Prophecies). It has also been said that Factions has a steaper learning curve than the other games, but as I started with Prophecies I cannot comment on this. Plus, normal mode has become easier than it was back then, so that might have helped things as well.

Nightfall isn't so bad, what with heroes and inscribeable items. The desert look gets boring quick though. There is definately not enough variety in the scenery, which I absolutely hate. For some reason I still enjoyed it more than Prophecies (having beat it twice in nm, and in hm with my main character). The key-less treasure chests are also a bonus. I also like the customization options for certain character classes better in this game (while I find myself liking none/barely any of the Factions ones).

Prophecies would have to be the one that gives you the most bang for your buck, game size wise. The others are may be shorter, but their unique features may be reason enough to pick them up.

get them all is the ideal thing to do,
but, since you are on a budget, get the platinum edition cos then you get the heros and also the hall of monument which you will be able to "carried forward" your character's legacy into GW2.

Hope you have as much fun playing Guild Wars as i have.

Pepto, it depends on what you're into. The style of story/setting you enjoy. Prophesies, the first campaign, is styled more like your typical D&D "slay the dragon and rescue the world from the evil might" plot. It's quite medieval, IMO. It's also extremely slow-going and takes quite a long time to level up your character. It's balanced somewhat by your ability to earn skills for free by completing quests. No other campaign offers that, which is kind of a shame. :P It uses the six core classes: Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Mesmer, Necromancer, and Elementalist.

Factions is more, well... Asian. :P You'll find yourself in more exotic, mystical places, from a holy school of warfare to a sea of jade. Also a blighted, crowded ghetto city with narrow streets and deadly gangs. The plot's a bit linear, but it doesn't fail to entertain as long as you turn down the speakers before Vizu or Danika say a line. Besides the six core classes, it also introduces two new classes -- the often-abused Assassin and the spirit-calling Ritualist.

Nightfall has more of an Egyptian/North African theme to it. The plot in this one runs a bit deeper; I won't spoil it for you but you're not just after some random power-hungry wizard or warrior this time. It's still somewhat linear, but you're still offered a few more branches of storylines to explore. Nightfall also allows you to use heroes, which are customizable NPCs you can equip and take along with you. Extremely useful. The two new classes (plus the original six) are the partywide supporter Paragons and the magical melee Dervishes.

Eye of the North is an expansion; you need one of the first three to play it. It adds to the lore and gives closure on certain events in Prophesies, but it doesn't introduce new classes and it's not very long compared to the others. I'd advise playing through a little bit before deciding if you want more.

Forums are always a hard place to come to when you're new to the game, since forums always attract some of the most heated and vocal of players.

That aside, I say to always start with the first. I'd either start with just Prophecies and get Nightfall after or go with the Platinum Edition.

Factions.

I find it's best and the ratings at mmorpg.com tend to agree with me.

I'd say Prophesies then Nightfall, Factions and Eye of the North, in that order.

Prophesies to learn the game and lore, and get all the free skills.

Whichever it is, try to get it at $19.99 or less, and enjoy!

I recently started playing GW (a month ago) I started out with prophecies and after bought the other campaigns and i must say, i would be pretty dissapointed if i started out with something other than Prophecies, if you never played the game before you miss out on alot in my oppinion. And both in factions and nightfall you become max level in very short time (i leveled my second in nightfall and i was lvl 20 after two days.

I know nightfall have heroes and they are nice indeed, but like the advice i was given, play them in order. Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North.

I would start out with Nightfall.

While I still consider Prophecies "the real thing", it is old and dated. No heroes, no inscriptions, and takes way longer to get to level 20, lots of low level content.

Nightfall has a nice starter area, some great char skins/faces, heroes and inscriptions.

Prophecies and Eye of the North is actually a bad combo. EOTN is hard for a new player without many skills, and Prophecies might become an exercise in loneliness, as most players moved on to the other chapters.

People are actually right, you need them all. Alliance Battles might be appealing to you, and is a Factions feature. So it is Factions or Nightfall... tough choice. Factions does not have inscriptions or heroes, beware.

Maybe the OP is wanting to buy Guild Wars to play for fun and not as some type of an investment similar to a piece of real estate.

I would suggest the Platinum pack-a-roo first.

If you're going to start the game new, there will be plenty for you to enjoy. I would say get the platinum edition as it should be cheaper then getting them seperately, and proph is also the easiest one. Then get NF as its the best chapter out of all 3, but you can skip factions to start off with. Ignore people saying that the game is dead, its only dead for people that have been playing it over 2 years who have nothing left to do like me.

If your new you should enjoy it. Also, if you havnt already done so, you can get a 10 day trial with access to all 3 campaigns, so you can play each one for a few days and choose the one you like best.

You can get the 10 hours trial key that was mentioned HERE:

http://de.guildwars.com/promos/gamestarde

It is german, but just enter your age and email address, then you will get a 10 hours in 14 days trial key for all chapters.
