Get it now. No updates except an estimation of release in 2009-early 2010. Plenty of time to enjoy this wonderful original.

Pets are indeed in this, many different kinds, but only for Ranger Primaries or Secondaries...

Your next question will likely be where to start in GW.

This is the order that they were published.
Prophicies.
Factions.
Nightfall.
Eye of the North(expantion requiring one of the other 3 chapters to work).
Bonus Mission Pack(expantion requiring one of the other 3).

If you can get all your looking at a solid year+ of playing(my personal oppinion) without getting to bored. If you take your time and explore everything and do every quest and create one char of each proffesion and max it out. There are some that speed through the game in much less time simply to get high end items or to catch up to friends.

I think your best bet is to start with prophicies and take your time, plenty of new people are still starting out and many older players create new chars and would be moving right along side you.

My suggestion would be to get prophecies, because it has the best storyline and a gentle learning curve, and its long as hell. Then get Eye of the North if you can, for the heroes and higher end content. IF you wanna get all the campaigns, that's cool too

Of all the games to start in, I would suggest Nightfall. The pace is such that you can learn the game quite thoroughly, but not so slow that you're like 75% of the way through it before getting max stuff. The addition of heroes also adds another layer of customizability. Furthermore, Nightfall has a branching storyline, so if you choose 1 path your first time through, you can choose the other if you take another character through. Nightfall and Factions also grant access to 2 additional professions each, which you won't have access to w/ just Prophecies. Nightfall also introduces inscriptions, which are another layer of depth to customizing weapons & items.

You can get a pet in Guild Wars; you need to take Ranger as your primary or secondary profession, take charm animal as a skill, then go out into an area, find a charmable animal, and use charm animal on it. Charmable animals are generally green when you target them, and they're usually "real" creature, (wolves, boars, bears), as opposed to the more exotic giant bugs or demons you might encounter.

If PvP is more your thing, then consider Factions. Factions is a bit on the short side, and the learning curve is steeper, but the settings are quite spectacular and there's a great selection of skills, weapon models, and armor sets. You also can then do alliance battles and get the faction skills.

Ultimately, of course, the decision is up to you. Really, the only reason I'd say to get Prophecies, (the 1st GW campaign), over the others, would be if you could find it at a really good price. Right now, though, I wouldn't pay more that $20 for it. Either way, having fun is the most important part, so base your decision on that.
