Everyone starts dirt poor. I was never a big farmer (too boring), I was more of a quester. Pick up everything and take the advice to ID white drops in the harder areas (areas where you fight lvl 20 guys) as a sword listed as selling for 43g, may sell for 88g (or could be only 45g) after you ID it. But if you are hard up for $$ thats a good way to increase it slightly.

Definitely dont get run to further areas as you will be less skilled, and you lose out on the drops while you are fighting over to the harder areas.

Finally, my first character struggled with $$ even after I finished the campaign (much prior to hard mode). The $$ started build with the successive characters as I knew what to buy or not buy, and the main character supplied all the $$. So the next characters just saved all the way to the end of the game.

So just play the game, have fun, do quests, kill stuff, and only buy the necessities. Also my first few characters only used collector armors (the armor that you get from "Collectors" by trading 5 Tengu Scalps etc) and only purchased the max armor from the higher end city (droknors). So save those collectable drops and check wiki for what you can trade them in for.

always just play the game farming comes last. and you need to try farming first before going all out on it to see if you like it i love farming i play to farm i suck at it i can never get my builds to work right. and also remember it takes money to make a good farming build trust me im doing the finishing touches on a perma shadowform sin and it has takin me close to 8k just to make this guy and my 55 monk thats not finished is close to 10k so remember finish the game first it will make it easier to make a good build i havent and its costing me alot of time and money.

Also keep in mind for farming (especially in Prophecies), most farm builds are based around an elite skill. You wont even have access to capturing elite skills until the Crystal Desert, Southern Shiverpeaks and Fire Isles.

Allow me to post what I did to another person asking this.
Just take as much quests as you can so your quest log if full of them.
If you manage to do quests quickly you should have 60k by a week.
Also save money by using collectors items and pick up everything that drops.
*Tips*
#1- Identify items whenever you can only when they are they are max or near max Otherwise a low 2-6 dmg spear is not worth IDing. So if you just Identify items it pays off for the ID kit and gives you alot of money in return.

#2- Buy Low Sell High, (This is only if you have alot of patience). The words explain itself. (Items that are common for the buy low/sell high trick are Mini-Pets, Zaishen Keys, and stacks of material or party items)

#3- Join a good PvE guild. Most members and officers will help you advance through the game probably thrice as fast as you would grinding through it. Some guilds also host events for money such as 1v1 tournaments and ect.

#4- Some people can also make a profit on playing PvP (Its not my prefered choice but thats just me). PvPers can farm Zaishen Keys for 5k Balthazar faction per key~~~Provided by Tolkano The Tournament Agent. These keys sell for 2.6k-3k ea. Or if you're a more competitive PvPer and like tournaments and rare weapons, Guild Wiki has the answer.( http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Pvp_rewards )
Let the Jade Wind carry you across your journey and good luck.

Like real life, it's difficult for anyone to tell you what you should do with your millions when you get them, if you even want to get them at all. It's all very subjective: YOU have to decide what you NEED to have, and compromise it with what you WANT to have. Most people I know that farm for lots of cash do it because they want cool looking elite armor, fully runed and inscribed for whatever they like to do. They also pretty much have multiple toons that they are supporting, and a ton of heroes.

The question you need to ask yourself is "what do I need money for?" When you know the answer to that question, you'll get an idea on how much you'll need, and that will determine where and how much you'll farm.

I've only got one PvE toon and I farm to have enough cash to equip a character, buy a weapon, or outfit a hero now and then. Don't sweat the big bank roll. It doesn't make you a better player, just one with a lot of time to kill.

Absolute tosh, please ignore the advice he gave there.

The world is entirely open now and market values are balanced across it. You'll find deviating prices between players, of course, but nothing server specific like Tetsu is suggesting.
