Hey all, so i just bought GW. Im an ex WOW player, i really wanted a change and i see that GW is right up my alley. So i created a Necromancer, I was just wondering what is a good secondary profession?

Now im not sure if GW is the same as wow where there are certain classes that are not as important as others. Is a Necro a good main profession or better off as a secondary.

Any pointers would be great.

Thanks

You can change at any time later in the game so it does not really matter, Necs can get away with using just there own skills w/o dipping into secondary most of the time. /Me for curses and /Mo for MM are two major secondaries.

Probably Mesmer or Monk. I would say all classes are important, some more gimped than others though due to unfortunate design.

Necro is a fine main profession. Soul Reaping gives necros a tremendous energy supply and they have some outstanding damage-dealing ability.

A secondary profession isn't much good when you're first starting out, because you don't have the attribute points to invest in it properly. Also, you get a rather random selection of skills that don't necessarily synergize well with your main profession. Too many people sweat over the choice of a secondary, but it doesn't really matter much at low levels and later you will be able to change secondaries at will depending on the needs of the mission or area you are in. I would say monk or mesmer is usually a good choice for a beginning necro.

Later, secondary professions can be very important. You mostly use them to provide one or two supporting skills that help the skills from your main profession. In other cases, you may use a full build based on your secondary for a special purpose (such as the Norn Fighting Tournament, which is extremely easy for a secondary ritualist).

Necros can be particularly good at running skills from secondary professions simply because of their energy intake. For example, necro-ritualist healers are often preferred over pure ritualist healers.

I'll second Monk or Mesmer as a Necro secondary when starting out.

There are really two divisions when it comes ot proffessions.

Those who utilize energy: Ele, Necro, Mesmer.

Those who mostly dont: Warrior, ranger.

Thus the proffessions that basically go togther are ones from the same group.

Monk is good secondary prof with every other prof.

That is the first basic step. If you want to go into proffesion detail, you must condsider each proffessions primary attribute, e.g. Fast casting with mesmer.

You must remember that you dont get access to that (you can use the skills just not make them anymore powerful) if its ur second prof.

For example, if you make a monk/mesmer, you will not be able to make your casting faster. Whereas if you make a mesmer/monk, you will have access to faster casting, but not have access to divine inspiration.

Then you must consider what skills would go togther. Although you have grouped the profs that use energy, you should try to use as many signets as possible with an energy user, as then you have energy for your primary, and can use signets while u recover energy.

However if you have a mesmer or necro (which u do) as second prof or primary, there are lots of skills that allow u to steal enemies energy, thus negating the above issue.

For necro, as said above, monk and mesmer are the preffered options.

Good luck, hope this helped.

Though Guild Wars characters have secondary classes, they aren't really truly multiclassed a la DnD, if you look on wiki only a very small minority of builds use more than 1-2 skills from their secondary profession (although some, like the N/Rt healers in sabway, use entirely secondary skills).

As such, it doesn't matter at all at this stage what secondary you pick, especially since you can change later

If you happen to be in Prophecies, pick /W as it will make ascending much easier, or /Mo for a hard res.

I went N/Me on my necro to basically abuse the hell out of hexes (MM is a fine build for a hero, for a human it's far too boring, IMNSHO).

It also made ascending in prophesies a cake walk.

Mesmer for more hex power and energy.
Ele for more energy.
Monk for healing/protection support.
Rit see monk.
Assassin to abuse Assassin's Promise.

There are pleanty of possibilities other that what I listed, but those are usually the main skills seen on a skillbar from those secondary professions.

For fun, take a ranger and get yourself a pet.
