Default Im a newb, here's my dumb newb questions.

Okay so I'm new here, new to Guild Wars but not new to the whole MMORPG scene - I used to play D&D Dragonlance until they changed my password and I couldn't log in. As a kid I used to play D&D (dice) until I was pushed into AD&D and loved it and I gotta be honest, no pretty graphics have ever made up for sitting there seeing the look on my friends' faces as my Warrior kicked serious butt and their 60lb Mage ran away.

Anyway, here's my typically dumb newbie questions:

1. How do I see what missions I have to do? I know it's a keyboard thing but which key do I press?

2. Look here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10395495
this person is making an Assassin - how do I get to do that? Am I right in guessing I have to get to a certain level with my Ranger before I can open new classes (or even get a sub-class like have her become a Ranger/Mage?).

So there you have my dumb questions.
Treat me gently

PS If you Twitter, come Follow me, I'll be tweeting about my first impressions of GW.

assassin is available only in the Factions campaign. if you don't have that campaign, you can't make one.

the default hotkey for missions and quests is L.

btw, GW is more closely related to Magic:The Gathering than D&D. if you are looking for a straightup role playing game, this isn't it.

1. You can check all your keys through F11 -> Controls

2. Assassins and Ritualists can be made if you have Guild Wars Factions. Just choose Factions as your starting campaign when making a new char. Dervishes and Paragons are made in Nightfall. They're not 'prestige' classes like you might be used to with D&D.

Blast, thunder was stolen.

There is no dumb questions, just dumb people

1) When you open your quest log, it will show your primary quest and a green arrow to the destination. (L is the key) of go open the menu located at the bottom left corner. For tips and general help go wiki

2) I'm guessing your right now at a really low level. It would come in great help if you tell us what ga,me you have. You don't have to be at a certain level to get a secondary profession (sub-class) just complete the main quests and options will open up.

For ranger help go here for guide.

If you get lost, stuck or another question about guild wars that you don't want to post a thread about message me in game. IGN: Zodiac Ele
This game is very different from D&D

Your questions aren't dumb :P

Primary quests are the ones you need to do if you just want to get to the next mission. These can be found by pressing "L" to bring up your quest log and are at the very top of your list. A list of the missions for the campaigns can be found here on the Guild Wars Wiki.

Prophecies
Factions
Nightfall

As for your Assassin question, that is a profession exclusive to the Factions campaign. So all you need to do is purchase that game, and you will be able to create an the six main professions along with the new assassin and ritualist.

Feel free to send me a message in game if you get the chance.

This is not to say, however, that GW isn't enjoyable for people who like D&D (I say this as someone who regularly plays Warlock, a Caltech-brewed D&D variant from the early 80s.) It's different, but fun.

Its quite daunting at first, Trust me i know i only just bough the full game yesterday. One of the most Helpful tricks i have been told/learnt so far is to hire a couple of Henchmen so your not questing totally alone.

If you want somebody to quest with then feel free to add me in game, my in game name is: Atojar

Hi there.

One thing that often throws newcomers is the difference between quests and missions. Quests are picked up from NPCs with the traditional exclamation mark over their heads, however missions give you no clue in your log. When you're in a mission outpost, there will be an "Enter mission" button at the bottom of your party list.

Just though I would add to Snograt's comment about missions. You can identify them as a shield shaped icon on your map, in the zoomed out map view they are silver pins. If a mission has been completed it will have a weapon of some sort next to it, if it doesnt, go do the mission.

As for secondary professions, you will be able to change those as soon as your character becomes an adult which is called

Ascended in Prophecies (desert missions)
Weh No Su in Factions (Nahpui Quarter mission)
and in NIghtfall you begin populating your Command Base

Err, I bought 'The Complete Collection' which has got 'Factions' (plus 3 others) but I installed 'Eye Of The North' cuz I thought that would be where you have to start.
So, can I just go to 'Factions' instead? I'd really love to play as an Assassin.

.Thanks to everyone else who commented, appreciated. I will add you all as soon as I learn how (uh oh).

Yeah, you can start with factions. It's the fastest way to level of the 3 campaigns but a huge learning curve compared to the others. To check people if they are online/on a different character add to friends list (N)

Yikes, I just played Factions for an hour and got totally confused.
I ended up in some Arena and couldn't get out even though I was supposed to be looking for some teacher guy.

Also, Im more into adventuring and from what this thread says: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10102502
Factions is more about scrapping.

Confusing, good game though.
I guess I'll go back to the original with my Artemis Ranger character .

eye of the north is an expansion of the three campaigns, so you cannot actually start a character there. think of it as another storyline added on top of the three campaigns.

btw, GW supports map traveling. press M and select an outpost, and you'll teleport there immediately. you can only do this with outposts that you've been to before, obviously.

You open friend list by pressing "N" I'm sure you'll see how to add friends.

My advice is that you play through prophesis with your ranger and learn how to play. And then, or as a break when doing it, start new characters to try out the other professions and see what you like. Also you'll get a greater understanding of the professions if you actually play them. This is great when it comes to PvP, but also PvE.

In Factions, at Shing Jea Monastery, you just follow the tutorial and that part is not hard. If you ended up in Shing Jea arena (PvP) and need to leave, just M for Map and click on icon for Shing Jea. That will bring you back to the monastery.

Also run towards the direction the green arrow on your minimap is pointing and you'll get wherever you need to be eventually.
