Texmod is a virus? - Guild Wars Forums

Hey guys,
so ive been running texmod for about a couple of months now and its been working fine. However, today, I load up texmod and click on "Run" and my antivirus program alerts me that a virus known as Backdoor.Graybird was found and blocked. Texmod on the other hand gives me a small window with the title Sh_t Happened and the comment "D'OH".
Wtf is this?
Seriously.... I can provide screens of the error msg if you guys want.
I just dont feel comfortable opening texmod right now : /

That is the message it gives when it unsuccessfully tries to run. The same thing happens to me, I have to disable my anti-virus program to get it to open. Once you've actually got it open, you can enable your anti-virus programs again.

Texmod will also leave temporary files on your computer that a lot of anti-viruses will detect as viruses when they aren't anything special.

Ok Av's will pick up texmod all the time...it happens.

Shit happened is indeed the usual error messege. AFAIK it dosen't have any error messeges that actually give you any details. This isn't a product made by some company it was made by some peoples that wanted to mod some games. Just the way it works will often get it picked up as a false positive. Download it from a reasonable source and double check the md5 checksum and you should be fine.

this is why i don't run crappy anti virus programs, if you're smart and DL from trusted sources you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

I didnt mean to trash on texmod or its creators. I realize Texmod was created with no ill intent and I think its an amazing program for gw players.
Just that error message saying "Shit Happened" and a virus attack attempt message kinda freaked me out...

Texmod is often ided by a virus by spyware programs because of how it functions/what it does. It is a program that modifies the files in another program. Which, sounds sorta virusy to a spyware program.

As long as you got it from a reputed source, you'll be fine

Not smart advice. Use an AV program, just not one of the many where the cure is worse than the disease.

Just out of curiosity, OP, what IS your AV program? And ya, I'd agree that you should run some sort of AV program - downloading from bad sources is far from the only way to get infected.
Worst comes to worst, most AV programs allow you to add an "exception".

Actually I'm having this exact issue too. I've been using TexMod for a few months, but I was in EotN before and as I tried to enter the HoM I got kicked out due to error 005. I was able to log back in but when I tried selecting a character it gave me the error again. I closed GW, re-opened through TexMod and got D'OH. I then tried running GW normally and it ran fine. I'll see what it does tomorrow.

1. Use Avira. In addition to consistently coming in near the top of every category in AV Comparatives' tests, they pay attention to user submissions of potential false positives. In fact, they fixed Texmod false positive detection the day after I submitted it.

2. No, Texmod is not a virus. Check your checksum to make sure you have a clean copy, then never worry about it again.

norton 360 sadly

ive been having problems with it for awhile now and its just running in the background eating chunks.
ill take chthon's advice and get avira once my subscription runs out = )

Same problem here. been running TexMod for ages no problems asnd suddenly yesterday get the "DOh" message.

Can't figure out how to disable the AV on norton 360 as the option is greyed out!!!!

EDIT - logged in today and it allows me to now disable the AV, so i can load Texmod and then re-enable.

(BTW I contacted Norton for a solution and they were REALLY helpful.........at not providing a solution to this problem

Exact same thing here - yesterday - Norton 360. I womder if some live update they did caused this? Now to work out how to bypass

i used tex mod to full explore tyria and elona,

using a av, never had a complaint from it about tex mod.

AVIRA is notoriously hard to remove from your computer.
