Assassin is what you're looking for, though if melee isn't your thing you can create spike builds for casters with Assassin's Promise.

for newcomers i say elementalist, easy to use if you are new
dont make newcomers use pvx, people, new ones have to learn the game mechanics

but yeah, ele is easy to use as long as you read what the skills do, and make combinations of skills to make them even better

they are straightforward damage dealers
air magic and fire magic both do well, as fire magic has burning (strong health degeneration) and air magic has armor penetration (ignores some armor rating)

use http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page to find out where to get skills, and to learn the basics

assassins can be great, but require you to learn about lead attack+offhand attack+dual attack, as you need to use chainattacks, some might find it hard

if you have all campaigns, you have 8 character slots, use 1 for elementalist and first get a nice helpful guild, that way you can slowly get better at the game, and learn about whats important, like heroes, which are npc's you can take in your team when human players are too busy doing their own stuff

make an assassin in case you do well with it, so you can see for yourself which you like
learn about the basics first, see more of the game, and try stuff out to see how skills work with other skills

people always say "use this and that build" but 1. you are new, so have no idea and 2. its boring using the same builds over and over, and use anything others use

warning with assassin: if you use offhand attack or dual attacks, without having hit with the attack before that (it goes lead attack, then offhand attack, then dual attack), you fail to hit and lose energy

i still use my own builds, and became way better than i was years ago, so its not that hard, as long as you try stuff out, nd get the right heroes (the npc's you can take with you and give skills and such)
also, dont use more than 1 major attribute rune,a dn dont use any superior, as they take away health, and since you are new, it may be important to keep health until you know what you're doing

i always use 1 major and the rest minor attribute runes, then always use 1 major vigor rune for health back
try to do stuff, and ask help from people in helpful guilds, but dont join speedclear and farming guilds, they barely help, from what i have seen, as they do speedclears and farming mostly

if you have nightfall, go to kamadan american district 1, and look for such helpful guild
good luck

Im surprised, that no one has named the Necro yet. With the right combination of teammates and/or Henchies/Heroes they are absolutely unbeatable in terms of DPS (also not taking Hex removal into consideraton). In addition, a lot of the damage is non elemental (direct damage and life stealing) which means it is not effected by the changes from NM to HM.

Frontline DPS
Assassins (harder to learn due to damage chain necessity)
Dervish (also hard to learn due to Enchant upkeep and attack combinations)
Warrior (Easyest melee class for a new player)

Midline DPS
Necro (see above)
Ritualist (Spiritspamming is one of the easier skills, but this is mainly single target and sometimes seems to be plagued by spirits random targeting issues)
Mesmer (Nice DPS, nice mob control, but needs a lot of experience to play well, especially if you want to make the most of many of the skills secondary effects or primary requirements, harder to do in HM due to increased casting speeds of mobs)
Elementalist (Great in NM, but severely lacking in HM due to increased AR vs. Elements)

I wouldn't recommend a profession based on a single build that requires significant effort (relatively speaking) to construct and execute. Aside from MoP spiking, Necro's are hardly a go-to profession for burst damage.

Which hasn't existed for four years now.

Also, I'm not sure why people think Assassin chains are difficult to manage. "Must follow a lead attack" and such is hardly rocket science. If there's a reason Assassins are hard to pick up for a beginner it's because of Factions itself (namely, afflicted exploding in your face and double damage from bosses), not the skills.

people see that cuz many people found assassin chains hard to use when factiosn came out, and newbies are also new to factions

you play for years, so you know how to use skills well (i think)
GW is also a new kind of MMORPG, so you gotat get used to it

anyway, elementalist is way easier, as it has straightforward skills, mostly

if you fail(like miss or blocked) with lead or offhand attack, then next chain attack skill will fail if you wanna chain right away, and you lose energy

most people are used to use skills in games where you dont need another being used first
its also easier to do with no chain skills, and a newcomer needs to start easier, right?
would make sense to me
