For 30 seconds, you deal no damage in melee, but whenever you attack in melee, target foe takes 8-34 damage
so it does not matter what you use.

Well, it doesn't matter what the damage is, but a fast attacking weapon is preferable.

Whenever you attack in melee, so no you can't attack with a wand or staff.

Considering the sycthe can hit 3 targets at once. It say the decrease in speed is worth the ability to deal damage to three targets per strike.
