That type of armor was intended for close in combat. Platemail was used primarily as protection against projectiles while mounted, you make a great target, while in a up close battle range movement and lack of weight can be > then armor plates. Real battles were much more "acrobatic" then we would believe today, more running around then clanging swords.

agreed. full plate cartwheels for the win. also those giant neck flanges are bastardizations of the defenses designed for deflecting lances while on horseback. its an odd bit of armor the GW plate with its mishmosh of styles periods and proportions *cough* uneven chest *cough*
