If I go to the academy before I'm done all of my available quests, will they be deleted when i get to post-searing ascalon?

Yes. You cannot come back to Pre-Searing Ascalon after you enter the academy, so the quests you didn't finish are no longer doable and will no longer show up in your quest log.

How about learning skills? (i.e. the missions to meet up with trainers and gain skills)? Do you recommend I do every mission, or can i just mission up to level 5 or 6?

I'm assuming you are talking about just exiting pre-searing. Talk to Sir Tydus (sp?). Then you'll be thrown into the Arena.

But should I do all those 15 or so missions that I have (im currently lvl 5) pre-searing, or should I just get into the post-searing world?

Do them.

The worst thing you'll get is gold, gear, xp, and in one instance, a skill point. Oh, and you can try out all the different classes, see what skills they have to offer.

That and you get to explore just an absolutely beautiful, detailed world.

If you are in a rush to get to post, get to level 3 and talk to Sir Tydus. Not advisable, but to each his/her own.

I would recommend doing them all and leveling up to 15. I came in at level 7 and I am still getting my butt kicked at level 8 in post-searing. Plus, doing the missions will provide you the opportunity to explore the beautiful scenery without to much difficulty.
