Default I feel stupid - Surmia, does it ever end?

I'm a level 10 Ranger/Elementalist, and I cannot seem to do anything but wipe on this quest! Granted, I'm taking henchmen, I just find them easier, but every time I think I'm close to the end I'm not, and then I wipe. Does it ever actually end?

The frustration tonight - I get through all the char, I free prisoners - one says oh help my mage friends. Fine - run around pull the bridge run run run find mages. Run run run to pointy thingies with lightings. Kill kill kill, and Ruric stands there like an idiot, staring at a large door I can't figure out how to open! Do I just keep killing and eventually it becomes clear? I was so frustrated when I wiped at this point (and it took forever to get to that point) I logged in disgust.

Help! Do I just keep killing and something happens? What am I missing? I feel so dumb

Did you try talking to Rurik?

Rurik is trying to open the door with an incantation, you have to defend him and the mages around the area. Wait for the mobs to attack, then attack only the ones that are attacking at that time. They'll take turns attacking, and if you are successful, Rurik will open the door and the mission ends.

Thank you! Frustrating to know I was *right* at the end, but at least I know that if I get to that point, it actually is the end.

This mission has got to be one of the most frustrating to figure out what to do. I swear I only finished it by accident. The instructions could be a little clearer, and not getting attacked when they're handed out might help too. Divided attention sucks.

This mission is very reminiscent of the story in the manual.

It does remind me of the story in the manual. Now if only I'd read the story BEFORE trying this quest there would have been fewer curse words uttered.

Practice, I know it might sound crazy from your experience, but back then, people did it when the charr came all at once, and kept coming. Now they just stand there and wait their turn to attack. I know it's very doable for experienced players to finish that mission under half an hour. Just practice, and perhaps experiment with skills!

I was wondering, how do you complete the secondary objectives in that mission ? I got the mission, kill the mobs around that person.. but it doesn't seem to be quite that

Any help would be appreciated !

If you're having trouble at the end, remember that you can close the big door you come through by pulling both levers. This leaves the Char with only 2 points of entry.

For the sidequest, you need to destroy the guys at the flame altar. Just follow the ember bearers until they open the gates to the temple, then go in and clean up.

During the BWE's, my party and I, learned that if you leave Rurik back behind the first gate, you can go around and use the Bait & Slaughter tactic to wipe out ALL of the charr in the area below the temple fairly easily with mid-level characters. Then open the gate for Rurik, he'll go to open the temple, and with no charr to worry about, you can sit down and play a hand of Texas Hold'em while you're waiting. The secondary quest had a bug in it during the BWE's, and so was un-doable. I've heard that it's been fixed and can be completed now. The gate to the flame altar will need to be opened to gain access, in order to rain on the charr ember bearers' and fire priests' parade.

I have noticed some changes in this mission from Beta.

At that final point, in Beta, Charr used to ambush you hard. Attacking from all sides at once, I would usually end up in the very center trying to defend the final mage.

Now, each side attacks in turn, three charr to a group. As once the final group (the boss) attacks, the mission is over. I was able to do the retail version of this first try, without losing any of my mages.

Keep your eye on the mini-map. As soon as one of the groups of charr moves, sprint into counter them. The next doesn't seem to charge again until that group is dead. As long as you get to each group before it attacks the Mage, this mission is absolute cake.

For the secondary, head right just before the bridge. Stay right until you are out of the tar then take a left. There is an NPC on the left. After talking to her, a group of ember bearers will start walking. Follow them at a distance. If you get agro from them, just run up to the path to the bridge but go elft and the head straight and you will see a closed gate in front of you. When the ember bearers approach it, it will open.

If you get agro, let someone with rez stay behind to rez you when you get there. After that gate is open, you can kill everything. Easiest to not get agro in the first place though ( but people are generally too stupid to pull that off).

Default Finished the Mission

I finished this mission, after the 4th try with henchmen....kept getting stuck on things, and I played stupid a few times, only to have the connecting screen for the academy come up and....not connect. Now I have to do the stupid thing AGAIN. I am getting to know this map very well. Well, at least this time I can look for the flame carriers.
