Default Endangered Species Quest

Master Nente - Post Ascalon

I've already done a seach on this and a few people are having problems with this quest, but I'm having a slightly different problem to others, hence the new thread.

Basically Master Nente offers you 4 skills and XP if you find a Melandru's Stalker and return it to him - he says he'll take it off you (I don't know, to mate them or something), but anyway, apparently when you complete the quest, he doesn't take the pet from you, you can keep it if you want.

The problem I have is that I already have a Melandru's Stalker (Spot) as a pet from Pre Ascalon, but no matter how many times I talk to him, he still insists I find him one, even though theres one right next to him, practically licking his boots!

I'm not prepared to give up my lvl 11 stalker, just to bag me a lvl 5 stalker and train him up again, whats the point if he doesn't take the pet from you anyway?

Anyone else has this problem where they can't complete the quest of they already have a Melandru's Stalker as a pet - or has anyone found a way around this without giving it up?

~BUMP~

I wouldn't mind abandoning the quest if someone can convince me thet the quest doesn't lead to others and that I can obtain the "Hunters Shot" skill elsewhere.

Hunters shot will probaly be at a skill trainer, but its worth it, hunters shot owns. Besides, most people swap first pets for others later in game.

As a general rule, any skill that can be obtained through a quest can be bought from a skill trainer later on in the game. For this one specifically, the skill trainer in Yak's Bend would offer you the skill for sale if you did not get it questing in Ascalon (the same as any other skills you missed from questing there).

Don't suppose there's any other quests that also reward this as a skill is there ?

Not likely. I can't confirm that it never happens, but I have personally never seen it. I can't see the devs putting in multiple quests for a single skill either. The only skills that you'd be able to get in more than one place would be elites (that often are used by more than one boss, in different parts of the world).

OK then, has anyone else had this same problem, where they cannot complete the quest if they already have a Melandru's Stalker as a pet, i'm thinking about sending a bug report off, and really need to know if its just me or not

This quest sucks even worse than you think. Have you tried zoning after activating the quest? Hunter's Shot can be purchased in Yak's Bend.

I switched secondaries post-ascending just for kicks (was Me/Mo) and went to do this quest. I had *no* ranger skills, yet Nente expected me to charm a stalker without having the Charm Animal skill. I had to buy a skill to complete a quest that gave the skill I just bought as a reward. Though, since I had a stalker in pre-searing (used ranger secondary temporarily before deciding on Mo), I already had a stalker for the quest and had no problem completing it.

It would be nice if, for whatever reason, you had the skill being offered as a quest reward, it would give you a skill point instead. I've had problems where npcs that have quests that reward skills won't always offer the quest right away... so I buy the skill and find out later the quest is now available.

I was able to complete the quest just by talking to him again. I had my pet and he gave me bonus, but didn't take my pet. Hope this helps

same here... I got the reward just by talking to him with my pre-Ascalon stalker. Sounds like a bug.

I've done this quest with two different rangers. One who had a wolf just waited until he got to Yak's Bend, gave up his old pet, tracked down a stalker, then after completing the quest, went back to Yak's and picked up a snow wolf outside.

The other had a stalker with her, and Nente just gave her the reward after talking to him immediately after receiving the quest.

If he doesn't do that for you, try tracking down the stalker that's roaming around Old Ascalon. After you find it, go back. Don't know, but it might help trigger the reward...

What really chapped my hide about this quest...

My W/R has had a warthog companion since pre-sear. Now where the heck am I supposed to get a cool replacement for that just for the stupid quest.

No thanks, Nente, you brainless twit. I'll buy the skill later you hosebag.

Had you renamed your pet ? I'd renamed mine 'Spot' by this point - I was wondering if that had anything to do with it - it seems odd tho that the code would do a strcmp on the name on the animal to check to see that it is a Melandru's Stalkers tho, but its the only thing I can think of.

Unfortunatly you can't rename them back as theres a 12 character limit

Just out of curiosity could it be the level of the pet? If memory serves my Melandru's Stalker became a Playful Stalker at lvl 11, so maybe your pet doesn't count as the right type of animal anymore.

Didn't know that changed to be honest - once you rename your pet you don't see things like this - so if what you say is true, that could be the reason why, as my pet is lvl 11.

No fair - its still not right that I have to abandon my pet to complete this quest.

Have you tried it again lately? I heard it was bugged at first but then they fixed it.

Yeah been trying it every day - to be honest I think its as Mana Garmr said - my Melandru's Stalker is now a Playful Stalker - but i didn't know that this had changed because I'd renamed my pet.

I still think its bugged by what Cymmina said about not being able to complete it if you change your profession later in the game because you don't have have the Charm Animal skill Master Nente rewards you with ?!?!

Either way I think the quest could do with a little tweaking.

No-one should have to give up their pet just to complete the quest - but a the same time, you'll kick yourself if you don't do it.
