I started playing a monk during the betas and became hooked. I found it to be a whole other game. The main drawback of playing a healer for me atleast, was missing alot of the scenery, for my attention stayed glued to those health bars. Smiting satisfies the craving of being "in it". Protection to me combines the defensive apsect of the healer with the active roll of a smiter. You have to be "on it" playing as a healer, even more so as a protector. I used to play as a mo/me, which was fun but wasnt really doing it for me. The best decision i ever made with my monk was switching my 2nd pro to necro. As a mo/n I am now a better healer. I sacrifice myself for you my team. I can have 79 energy with various trinkets and thanks to offering of blood, I almost never run out. I will and have help anyone who asks me with anything. I have done the Thunderhead mission a million times just because of the shortage of monks. Monking is not for everyone, which becomes apparent when that monk your team is using isnt even carrying a single res spell or goes running off like a warrior.

Well, for some reason, I think that the Monk profession is well over appreciated. Yesterday, I was forming a group just for the fun of farming near Sorrow's Furnace entrance. It did not really matter who, or what profession would join. I know, for having played with all the combinations, that any group can work out pretty well. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it does not. But there was this guy shouting "Group looking for monk", We need a monk, going to farm, monk needed. I asked "What is your obsession with monk?" "Cause he can f*** heal us, that's why" BAM, he was gone (for his bad attitude)

Do you guys know that a good Well of Power from a necro can do marvel?
Do you guys know that a good ranger with Melandru's resilience and some Troll ungent does not need a Monk?
Do you guys know that a necro, a mesmer, can heal himself with different skills, that a warrior can automatically gain +300 hp with Endure pain?

I am a bit tired of this obsession of asking for monks. I have nothing against this profession, it can be fun. But to be honnest, I have more fun going on a quest with necros, mesmers, elemantalist and rangers, esp. trappers.

Whenever i form a group, it is my new objective: going out there without any monk. And you know what? It is a lot of fun.
Back to the OP:
I agree that monks are overappreciated, and I play one. I think the reason for this is that most groups could not survive without at least one monk. In the early areas of the game (Ascalon through Shiverpeaks) you'll see a lot of newbs. It isn't their fault they're new; we all were at one point anyway. These are the Eles who don't know they shouldn't run into the fray, the Necs using a sword, the W/Mo's who think they can survive an onslaught of 6 mobs with no healing/protection support. It's understood that a party of this nature is going to *need* a primary healer or the mission will fail. Later in the game you have the noobs who do the same thing. For this reason alone, monk is the one class that almost every player will request for the party.

I have played in teams with no monk. I take my necro loaded down with Wells and Blood Rit. If everyone in the group is skilled we can generally finish a mission with little trouble. It will be slower than having a dedicated healer monk, but the extra challenge is enjoyable.

A previous post mentioned that the least skilled player will be the most vocal about getting monks in the group to cover his mistakes. I completely agree with this. Adding to the problem is that these unskilled individuals set a bad example for the rest of the party. At the end of the mission everyone is so frustrated they leave immediately. Skilled (and experienced) folks know better and will be unharmed. Inexperienced players will not have the chance to learn better ways to play their characters, eliminating opportunities for improvement and adding to the monk-centric way of thinking.

---------

I do love playing my monk. I love grouping with monks. However, GW is a team game. Whether you prefer PvP (where your team faces an opponent team), or you like PvE (with real players or henchies) you still have a team. In a team based game, no one class should be in higher demand than any other. How do we fix this? My suggestion is to add more priest classes. Perhaps along the lines of EQ's Shaman or Druid -- a hybrid with healing power that is close to a monk's but also direct damage that is nearly as good as an Ele. Maybe a new type of healer such as a Dark Cleric whose healing and protection spells will not be quite as effective as a Monk's but will punish enemies more. Either way please don't destroy current classes' damage output by "tweaking" the existing self healing skills or adding new ones. Just give us more options!

well what can i say...

playing a healing monk is a most unrevarding and most difficult exp in GW. dont take me wrong i can outheal the whole party doing armorer quests in FOW if we have blood necro who remembers from time to time that i use energy too but now i use my mo/n in guild runs mostly, or if i'm playing with my friends. i can see nothing during missions but hp bars and my energy bars, smtimes i know that it's pretty interesting mission (my main char is n/mo), but i'm too busy healing... well lets say good random teams are rarity

about prot monks - 75% of prot monks just LOVE to spam enchants in front og mesmer group, and i have to outheal the damage, so basically healing monk's bond to cover for prot monks mistakes all the time.... o yes, it sucks

about ele/mo being greatest healer ever - finish FOW with random team as only healer, than we'll talk about it i have ele/mo too - my guild needed healer, so i tryed this combo 1st - now i'm nuking with ele, healing with monk. and pls - can i see ur screenshots - u're finishing missions with ur e/mo as only healer? otherwise dont even start

about monks soloing UW - dear u can solo it with n/mo - and trust me its REALLY boring to kill helpless aaxes, so i'm not into it - but did u try solo it with any other class but monk? i suspected ele/mo can do it, smbdy in this tread said ele/n can do it (no screeny tho), so stop blaming monks for being non-stupid - anyway, healing bunch of noobs we have no other choice
