By the same token, the chance of a group of random strangers getting through it is rather less than that of a snowball running a maze in a blast furnace.
I made it through with a random team, but it took us a few tries. You don't have to be overly organized as long as everyone (if even one person doesn't follow this it won't work... ) follows these simple rules:

1) Don't go out of your way to fight anything

2) Always focus fire on the sages

3) When going right, pull a single patrol into the pen with the ghost and then everyone run to the top of the hill.

I'm not sure why but everyone always agrees to #3, but then in game they want to hang out at the bottom of the hill or worse yet they go to the gate entrance and invite in a second patrol with more sages which killed our party every time.

I don't like henchies on this one as they have a bad habit of going after things they shouldn't! (I did the left side of Elonas 13 times with henchmen to get Word of Healing)

From what I've seen, those 2 rules alone are beyond 99.9% of players...

Another update:

Having now taken it to task to figure out how to beat the Thirsty River with henchmen, I'm still at a loss. Last night me and one of my friends (Me/E) decided to give the River a try with 4 henchmen. She had never been on the River mission before, but I briefed her prior to entering so she had some idea of what was coming.

Henchmen:

Stefan (fighter)
Little Thorn (brawler)
Alesia (healer)
Claude (cultist)

We easily cleared the first 5 bases. Well, not exactly easily because the timers were really close on each of them (within 10 seconds of 2:00 on each base.) However, on the last base it was the same situation. She had her interrupts on her skill bar. I had my interrupts on my skill bar (2 for me and 2 for her) and Orison of Healing just casts too fast to interrupt on the boss. In addition, Word of Healing is cheap and casts too fast to interrupt. Basically we couldn't get the boss interrupted to prevent healing the priest, and we couldn't get the henchment to focus fire on the priest while we kept the boss interrupted.

We did learn some things though. It appears the enemies DO take a death penalty when resurrected. After clearing the patrols ~5 times, they died faster and faster each time we cleared. It wasn't a case of focus fire either. The arcanists died in 3 hits eventually. The avengers were also considerably less buff, dropping in a matter of a few seconds rather than 15 - 20 seconds.

Even with all the yard fluff dead, we STILL could not prevent the boss from keeping itself alive. And it appears we are going to have to kill off the boss before killing off the priest. I'm not sure if the boss gets resurrected or not (assuming it does) so it will be interesting to see if we can get where we need to be.

After finally giving up, we thought about strategies. Our next attempt is going to be her using backfire and me using scourge healing to basically take the boss out of the picture. With that combo and at mine and her skill levels, that combo will do approximately 65 damage when the boss heals itself the first time. Then each subsequent orison of healing will only heal for about 40 health rather than the suspected 99 health it would normally do (60 for orison (12 HP) and 39 for 12 DF.

I'll post again if I find a combination that works, other than having to take 6 players in and kill everything.

It's a very difficult and frustrating mission with henchmen, to say the least.

I see there are two posts above talking about Elona Reach mission. This mission is very easy, even with henchmen. I just want to add my tips for those who still have problems with this mission.. Here is the link.

Hope it helps.

Default AI vs. No Intelligence

I saw the preceding discussion about the use of henchmen and random groups of inept pre-pubescent morons who spend too much time gawking at their 'hot' female character. I couldn't agree more with the previous posts. Sometimes I would rather do a mission 10 times with AI characters, than to do the same mission 1-2 times with cro-magnon men... Thus I have become a critic of many AI problems in the game and one problem stands above all others.

AI Npc's have not learned that they can walk around obstacles. In fact, I myself get stuck on entirely too many stupid obstacles such as a tree, a bend in the road, or my own pet or Npc. You tab+space bar all you want and you will never auto-run to the target which is eating your team alive. Like the earlier writer, I have sat in amazement as I solo'd bosses, or gangs of insects to no avail. I would have to say my biggest gripe (and there arent many) is the gross overabundance of impermiable programmed objects. It is wildly unpredictable you walk thru some things you wouldnt expect to be walk-thru-able, and other objects end missions and quests like korean guilds end Pug HoH runs.

Other alternative... Cro-magnon men dragging their hands and tongues on the ground saying stuff like "huh dude.. did you see the new Angelina Jolee flick, you can almost see her naked.../drool"

First introduction to the world of these teleports, these are not very difficult, click on one so they all light up (if one does not, click another until some light shows on them) and then wait as the sequence begins. There are four switches, each in an order which can be noted by them lighting up in that order, at the end, activate them in the same sequence and then simply walk into the teleporter and it will move you automatically to the next one. If you fail, all of them will flash on then off and you need to start over, this can get annoying with multiple people trying to activate switches, especially a reason to suggest henchmen for the first portion. Teleports remain active for the map on that side only, meaning you will need to activate the opposite side to go back.
I wasted several minutes on this. This doesn't appear to be very accurate. I stepped onto the teleporter and waited there. The light immediately lit up and then started turing on and off in the correct sequence. Then, I had to relight them in the same sequence. This is how it worked for me. Without stepping onto the teleporter first, I could never get them to show me the sequence.

I just ascended with my monk, and... boy and I glad I had Necromancer as a 2ndary profession. I never used any of the skills whatsoever, until fighting my mirror. In prep, I my favourite attributes in order to raise my curses. Then, cast 4 enchantments on myself, and made sure I had the Necro skill that takes them all away, reducing your health by 40 for each. That helped, a lot, but... I almost died anyway. I actually think I *did* die, just at the same time as the doppleganger so it counted anyway. Woohoo!

And now I am going to change my secondary profession, probably to Ranger so I can get a pet.

Fair warning: Unless you're willing to put a significant amount of points into Beastmastery, that pet will be dead weight and damn near useless.

Question

OK, I'm not sure why I've been directed to this thread, but I'm curious what Ascension really is? I've ready the Guild Wars Wiki def (see link below), but on one seems to really tell what it is.

http://www.guildwiki.org/wiki/Ascension

K... reading it again, that's all fine and dandy, but what does Ascension mean for the story of your character? I've already fought Mursaat
in Southern Shiver (a head of time, but oh well) and I understand that Asension is supposted to unlock added quests and stuff. But, the real question is, what does it do for your story? I could care less about what it does in the game, that's all technical stuff. I want to know if it's essentially your character becoming a God-Like hero or what specifically is the literary purpose behind ascending?

If someone could please provide a response based on the story
that unfolds, rather than more about how it unlocks this or allows you to do that, that's teh definintion I'm looking for.

THanks

SPOILER ALERT! This is your final warning!

...

Alrighty then.

In order to understand what exactly ascension means for the storyline, go back to the Sanctum Cay mission and look at the final cinematic that starts after you step on the boat. In it, Vizier Khilbron explains that as one of the Chosen, you have the potential to defeat the Mursaat as the Flameseeker Prophecies have predicted. This, however, cannot be accomplished by the Chosen who are to fulfill the Flameseeker Prophecies until these Chosen are ascended. So by going to the desert and ascending, you are effectively taking the place of the Chosen who are supposed to bring the end of the Mursaat like the White Mantle fears. And you thought those puny villagers you dragged through Divinity Coast were going to do all the dirty work, eh?

As the one who uttered the Flameseeker Prophecies, Glint is obviously a prominent figure in their completion. The reason you end up at her lair after ascending (The Dragon's Lair mission) is so she can gloat Seriously though, she wishes to direct you further on your path out of the desert and towards the eventual destruction of the Mursaat. This, of course, begs the question of whether Glint, as the marvelous prophet that she is, predicted the release of the Titans, and whether she has some sort of a personal stake in their release. The fact that she all but orders their elimination through the Titan Quests could be interpreted as both "for the good of Tyria" and "so they are out of the way." And if you disagree with the second understanding of the situation, consider that it's exactly what she had us do to the Mursaat

So, was that enough spoilerific information for you?

Very informative. Actually what I was looking for, but no one I know who's ascended seems know know.

Basically, it sounds like it's just a preperation. You're character must face their inner demons to become the warrior from a proficy told a long time ago. It sounds like defeating the Mursaat is really the end (however, the game makes it sound like ascension is the end at this point).

Spoilerific, yes.
What I wanted to know, definintely.

If I'm misunderstanding something, please feel free to add clarity.
