Default [MERGED] Monk -50hp

I've been playing a monk lately and know that there is a -50hp offhand that everyone raves about. People are selling them for ridiculous prices but I heard that you can get it from a quest. Does anyone know which quest gives this item? Thanks in advance.

Nope that item is not from searing its actually in the ruins after it. You get the item from the Quest "Cities of Ascalon" from Symon the Scribe in Ascalon City (Ruins). Just go up the stairs by Tydus and he should be just to your left. =)

This is correct, and you must also do another quest first, before you can get that one. I believe the first one is called "Counting The Fallen".

You can do 'Cities of Ascalon' and 'Counting the Fallen' at the same time, but the 'Cities of Ascalon' quest is activated after you do the first mission I think. (I do know that you have to advance to a certain point in the game, because he didn't give me the quest the first time I went there with my first character, but he did give it immediately to my second character after I advanced some more)

I just completed the "Cities of Ascalon" quest and got a necro offhand and an ele offhand. Was this is a glitch, or have the devs nerfed the -50hp offhand?

It's a necro item, but people use it with their monks because they want to reduce the total health of their monks and the necro item does that. -50 health makes monks harder to kill with protective skills that convert damage into a percentage of health rather than a fixed amount.

Another great item for the Monk Build would be the Long sword from Henge of Denravi. You can achieve it by crafting it from the Weaponsmith there. I find it very useful because it gives you a free +5 Energy =).

so that's all this does is -50 hp? is there a energy bonus or regen?

if it's just -50, thats just . . . silly.
my monk has 395 hp. . .
  • if i get hit with a -17% that puts me at 327
  • if i do the -50 i'm at 345. hit me with -17% and i'm at 286
yeah it's a smaller total amount, but it puts me ~13% closer to death. so wtf

No, that particular focus item also has a +6 energy (req. 5 Blood Magic), +3 energy while enchanted, +3 energy while hexed, and +5 energy while health is below 40%. But yes, it's really all about the -50 (for the monk builds).

Think about it. First of all, it's -10%, not -17% (with Protective Spirit).

At high health, the -50 isn't going to make a big difference. But let's say your health is all the way down to 55 (the target health of most solo monk builds). So now each hit is only doing 5 damage. OK, but still, the same number of hits will kill you, right? Right.

But... think how much more effective your healing is now. Namely, think about things that regenerate health like Mending and Healing Breeze. Think of how mending, bringing you 8 health per second, is suddenly bringing back a full 15% of your health every second. Now are you seeing it?

if you start almost dead (55hp) and something bangs you for 20, it only takes 3 hits to take you down. ive been trounced from 450 hp by stuff that gets me below 200 before i knew wtf hit me.

businesses talk in percentages all the time because it avoides the real numbers . . . not sayin anyone is AVOIDING the numbers, but IMO ppl are being fooled by the %'s. if something is hitting me for 25 pts per hit, healing 15% of my total per second is irrelevant if it's only 8 per sec which is only a fraction of the dmg being dealt. If you can survive that with 55 hp you can better survive it with 255 hp.

now OTOH the energy boneruses . . . that kinda makes it worth it imo . . . the +17 energy (or even 11) translates to more death. I wouldn't have a problem dropping the 50 hp for a steady recurring bump in energy. It's not all at once, but contingent on getting buffed or hexed or w/e . . . so at some point BOINK extra energy . . . which imo is bettern having it full time cuz it just gets spent.

lol the whole point is that...for example there is a massive group of 20 enemies... you can run in and with 55 life and they do 5 dmg per hit to you

just use sheilding hands etc and it is 0 dmg per hit

yes it doesnt last for ever but also you can heal so fast with mending/breeze on u all the time so you are just about impossible to kill...

Thumbs up Guide to get Guild Wars -50 health focus objects

I have written a guide to getting them in 4 hours instead of the usual 10 hours of play!!!

First time may take you a little bit more because you can't go running everywhere if you don't know
exactaly where is everything. However, second and third time will be so fast!

Create Monk character
Skip cinematic
Talk to get your first mission
Before going out of Ascalon talk to the lady or men at the end of the city which gives you mission
to talk to Windmill man.
Go out of Ascalon
Talk to the man, save Gwen to get exp points
Talk to the man who is going out of the city to get new mission and to Lina (also next to door to enter Ascalon)
Enter Ascalon and go out with someone so you get your resurrection seal
Jump to Ascalon to leave your new "friend" and go out of Ascalon again
Run south in direction to the city in the south (latter known as Sardelac Sanatory),
but first talk to the windmill man and help him with the bees to get the exp points
Talk to Devona and she'll tell you to go to the city next to her (Sardelac)
Talk to Mhenlo and to the other guy who will give you some more powers

Now you should have 7 skills

Jump to Ascalon to get the exp points from the mission
Get new mission (say you want to be a Warrior as second profession) and go out of Ascalon
Just outside talk to the man who asks you to go to the city in the south
to get some more exp points (jump through the map again)
Now it's time to do last mission: find Grast (follow the indications in the map, it's easy): he'll ask you
to kill some Grawls. In the way to kill them get the 2 more skills from one of the 2 guys who are one next to
other (not Grast, the other 2 guys)
Kill the 3 Grawl invaders (noone else!), talk back to get exp points and say you want to be a Warrior.
Jump to Ascalon, get exp points and jump to new section.

You are leaving old Ascalon with level 2.

Time of play: about 30 minutes

Run to city, talk to Tydus to get exp points.
Talk to Symon to get mission of counting dead people.
Go out of city to find the embassador, first talk to Grast to get the new 2 missions (Gargoiles and find the soldiers)
Talk to embassador and his friend to get new missions
Jump to Ascalon to talk to the lady that the embassadors has asked you to help
Go out of AScalon and get your reward: mending
Use it and run to Sanatory Sardelac without killing anyone, just run! Don't care about your henchmen
On the way do the mission of the embassador's friend
Enter the city
Go out, cast Mending again (you'll always do this from now on)
Run to do Symon's mission
Once you get the object, use Mission selector and activate Grast's mission to help the soldiers and run to them
Bring them back to Grast. On the way you'll kill at least 5 gargoiles, so when you arrive t o Grast
you have donde the 2 missions.

Now you have "Propulsion" (Running) skill, equip it because you'll need it! It will help you to run run run !!!

Talk to Tydus to get Noirth Wall cooperative mission, before going there talk to Symon to get your exp points
Coop mission: don't need any help from others. Cast mending and run run run !!!! Use the way on the right to leave all the big group of gargoiles
fighting again the others!

Finishing this mission will be about 10 minutes.

Now you are at Fort Ranik.

Do the mission with some ppl if you can. Don't waste time killing the foes up on the hills, they don't help at all.

Finish the mission.
Get the exp points and run (yes, run, don't kill anyone!!!) to arrive to Surmia's Ruins City.

Jump to Ascalon before doing mission and talk to Symon to get Cities of Ascalon quest (that mission, once finished,
will give you the object!).

Jump again to Surmia. Do mission (remeber to touch the Surmia's Ruins Monument when you see it!!!).

When finished you are at Nolani. Don't do the mission, go out of the city.
Mission List: take Cities of AScalon so you see where you have to go. Cast mending and use "Running" as usuall to touch
the monument. Don't kill anyone, only run run run!!! Once you've touched it jump to Sanatorium Sardelac city.

Only one city to visit!!!! Follow the map to find the last city, use mending and propulsion to run as usual, in 5 minutes you've found
the third city. Jump to Ascalon to talk to Symon and get your reward.

Enjoy it!!!

LOL chalk it up to being new to the monk char. I got this item with my First Nec char (now deleted) transfered all belongings to my shiny new Elem/Nec and did the mission again of course. Now I have 2 right? Wrong. I had no use for the item and didn't know what I had. Can we say... merchant sell? LOL Oh well. I can still do it with my new monk, and I believe I never even did it with my Main Warrior Char so I still have that one too.

oh god

Please understand that a 55hp monk does just have the -50 health offhand but sup runes on every peice of his armour only with yhese can one achieve 55 health. Now u might say thats "silly" but if u get the skill protective spirit from Ammon Oaisis (the first town in the desert) u take only 10% damage(5 damage) and couple with healing breeze (+6 health regen, mending (+ 3 health regen) and also shielding hands (-5 or something damage) u basically become invincible. Now u might also say now how can u keep these up becasue u would soon run out of energy, well use the skills Essence Bond and Balthazar's Spirit, these restore energy. and also take some smiting AOE spells

u can survive any meelee attacks and most other attacks while effectively killing them. U cannot however survive mes as they crack ur enchanments and kill u in about 2 shots.
