plasmasword most likely saw just a normal Moa... as the Black Moa is only available from that quest
anyways... even tho it doesn't say it is Dire/Hearty/Elder... i believe it has the stats of an Elder... which isn't that bad...

I'm curious as to whether it spawns with a random evolution. Easiest comparison would be the UW black widow (another lvl 20 pet found wild). Those come in all three evolutions depending on when you find him (or where you find him if you go ahead and do multiple missions in UW). Might want to test that out with the Moa...

Black Moa is only for looks and is ONLY availble during the Beak of Darkness quest. Although it is a rare canthan pet, it's no different than picking up a Moa from Prophecies. I have one. It looks intimidating standing next to my necro and golem, but pointless otherwise.
Sorry man, but you're going to have to live with the black moa as is. I havne't seen it Dire or Hearty. As far as I've seen (b/c I've seen a few other necros with BMoas, they're only Black MOa (no elder, hearty, or dire).

According to GuildWiki, the Black Moa can be capped:
"Ferndale: Half way between House zu Heltzer and Aspenwood Gate (Kurzick) during the last phase of the Beak of Darkness quest, and any time after it has been completed."
I'm sure there are probably Black Moas that are not level 20, although I haven't looked myself.

No. The black moa, spawns every time yo go in ferndale (if you have done the quest), but always is only 1 and only lvl 20.

seen* I presume?
Yes, I've seen a lvl 30 one - I didn't bother with that too...
Concerning Black Moa's "evolution", they are elder. You cannot find dire or hearty black moas (plain name = elder).

People have capped elder spiders and have removed their name months later to find them dire. Anyone found a way to force this? Has anyone managed this with a black moa? I like levelling pets to dire [let them solo minotaur while you tank until lvl 11 aggressive, and then eoe bomb grawl until 20 dire]

According to the Pet FAQ on this site, pets don't evolve once they're level 20. I have 7 pets, on each of my characters except rit, and I've never seen them change evolution when level 20.
