And let's not forget, you can plant your crops AND complete a quest at the very same time.

I'm not sure what step 2 is, but step 3 is profit as always.

Iron Ingots can be salvaged from any junk loot that is made of metal, so no point of farming them really.
Steel Ingots drop very rarely, so you might aswell just craft it.
Scales drop from... ummm... Scales. Never actually seen it to drop in large amounts anywhere.
Dust is dropping in nice amounts in FoW and SF (salvage enslavement stones), and it also can be salvaged from various junk loot.

This question probably should have been raised in the farming area.

But, iron you'll salvage quite easily from weapons and sometimes those items that are labeled as salvage gear. For steel I have high success from salvaging shields and sometimes armour .

Maybe try looking in the farming threads. For cantha jaya bluffs is a tried and true place for me for farming salavageable items.

A good way to get scales is by farming the vermin outside of Senji's Corner, and salvaging the vermin hides.

u can get alot of steel by expert-salvaging armors and such from melee mobs - such as some ettins, dwarves and yeti f/ex. every time we're doing THK mission i'm getting alot of steel, linen and leather.

u can farm undead for glitter, 75% of swords will give u iron, and for scales u can farm (surprize) scales on the beach N from the ascalon settlement, they drop some collectibles that can be salvaged to scales

also u can materials list on wiki

I find Grenths footprint and sorrows furnace to be great for armour drops to salvage iron and steel. Either solo or even just take 3 hench and clear the place out.

Dust drops like mad in fow solo spider runs.

I get a decent amount of glittering dust from salvaging jade items I find in the Luxon side of Cantha.

Iron and Steel you can get from salvaging armors. You can check guildwiki for which types of armors, a good rule is that "hard" looking armors yield iron or steel, while "soft" yield leather or cloth. By salvaging using a superior kit (the one with 100 uses) you can yield steel enough times, as basically you're always doing expert salvage. It's not worth farming specific areas for those materials, simply play the game normally. Also, you can salvage "white" weapons, swords axes and shields will also yield one of those materials.

Glittering dust can also be salvaged by the various "remains" type of materials.

Scales is the only really "rare" of those materials, and you won't get them often. Check guildwiki again on who drops or what can be salvaged into scales.
