If you are doing the missions in either - South Shiverpeaks, Ring of Fire and the Palace in Cantha, take along some keys, you can get some good golds from there sometimes.
Also, take keys while exploring those areas too.
And as a couple of people have said, put money in the storage. I personally don't use storage money unless I have 20-30K and am buying a cheap green or a new set of armour (n00b chars ), even then I only take up to half of whats in there, so you got something left

You see people prancing around in Obsidian armor and you think they're rich, but in all honestly 70% of them probably used 1500k on the armor and are now running around with collector's swords modded with imperfect mods.

I've never had more than 200k in all my GW life. I've played since the release of Prophecies, only to always stay poor. My gameplay experience has always been fun, I've been able to prove myself a useful player and make many friends. My list actually has people I remember adding. I however, have always been strapped for cash. I always attempt playing the market, but when I think I'm getting a good deal, it ends up the price has lowered, and I find myself lost in the abyss.

Money-making is so woeful. It really shouldn't be so influential, but in an MMO it's more or less impossible for it to not be.

I'll cut to the chase. How can I use my money to the fullest? How can I make more? I'm currently dragging myself along with 118k, attempting to farm golds with chest runs this weekend, and sell unidentified golds for 500 extra gold off my key prices. It won't be enough, though, and I only have so long. What can I do in the long run?

Many thanks,
- Cori
Wow, are you a mirror or what? I'm exactly like you, the only thing that changes is that the most money i ever had as 70k, and i wasted it in full 15 gladiator armor.

Now im sticking with 40k and 4 chars (Ranger, Monk, Necro and Warrior).

I got "rich" by doing a lot of dual-UW, got a few ectos, it really helped me raising my money, since im always wasting it on gear (Ranger has Ironwing Flatbow(the end-game one), Necro has a Wand and a Focus from colector (just because i find Necro Weapons too expensive), Warrior has Victo's 20/20 and Exalted Aegis (End-game), and im still gearing up my monk).

That's my story.

The thing about me is, is that I don't know where to farm. Any ideas? I'm not too far in the game though; on the Factions side, I'm still a lackey in the Marketplace. (:

I'm still pretty new to the game but I am proud of having 8 platinum. XD

Beyond a certain point you're paying for nothing more than vanity. To get the most out of it, buy the essentials e.g. 1.5k max armour, collector/crafter stuff.

For rare material requirements you can craft stuff with existing materials (salvage often)

Factions collectors/crafters add some nice things now, some quite easy to obtain. Armour can be mix and matched for a nice look but still max stats.

For runes, the only really expensive ones compared to the others are superior vig/abs. Major will suffice for general PvE play and cost a fraction.

After that it is all about vanity.

After you got the "essentials" out the way it's just bonuses what you buy - to get the most out of those take things which are maybe one or two points off perfect. 1hp off perfect? If you depend on 1hp you're already in trouble. 1dmg less? Won't make a huge difference. 14%? Behaves more or less like 15%. Save 10-150k+? Sure thing! Remember, that's 10-150k saved you can spend on future characters.

For PvP play, best solution is use a free slot for a PvP char (max everything then and looks are irrelevent)

I would say chest running, I rarely get anything good but one day while running hells precipe with a friend i got a req 8 15^50 dead bow. So stock up on keys and chest run till you get your money.

If you have patience just buy low / sell high in Kai Center or Lion's Arch.

Default don't buy

I have done very little farming just looking for stuff to sell. But I don't buy anything from other players and my money just stacks up. If you want something go onto guildwiki or come to this forum and try to find out where to get it. Then go farm for that item. I have many greens and golds for my characters (with good mods) and I didn't buy a single one of them, I farmed for every one. I currently have 240k in storage.

I have 2 accounts (Prophecies + Factions & another Prophecies) I have maxed out my storage space in account number 1, and all my chars (5, 6th is PvP char) have 100k on them. I have started transferring money in to my other account, and everything I sell, I now buy ecto's for. I have 15k Armor on my Ele, and on my Necromancer, I have FoW. I have been playing Guild Wars since April 2006. Now, how did I do this you ask? ... Simple ...

1. Never buy keys (except elite missions), keys will drop, and your lucky if you get anything decent from a chest.
2. Always sell any Gold armor you get dropped (Unidentified gold armor can sell for up to 4k, identifed Superior Rune of <whatever> rarely sells for more than 200Gold to trader, and NO ONE wants to buy a Superior Rune of Channeling from you, when they can buy it from trader for 100g more...
3. Get yourself to Cavalon, or House zu Heltzer, and do the elite missions. (Don't bring a Ranger or Assassin to The Deep, no one wants it.) Up until I made it to the elites, I had a maximum of 40k in my storage. Elites brought me over 3 million.
4. Buy low, Sell high. I will spend 1/2 - 1 hour every night before I go offline, just watching the WTS and WTB's in KC dist 1, and LA dist 1. Eventually you know prices, and you get a good deal (got a kuunavang for 50k once, sold it for 100 + ecto's)
5. Crappy things like gold sceptors, staffs, shields, sell to people for identification title.
6. Get a 55 Monk with SpellBreaker elite, or an SS Necro, get it Ascended (or Closer To The Stars), and Do UW/FoW runs. You don't always get ecto's, but you get a lot of other things you can sell to the merchant. Salvage anything you can get Glittering Dust for, since that sells nicely at the trader (I Cleared out my storage of Glittering Dust, Wood, Iron, and Plant Fibers, and got over 20k).
7. DON'T bother modifying a weapon to try to up it's value, this is a waste of money (unless you have a req 8 15^50 Fellblade, toss on a 20/20, and +30 to triple the value usually). Always remember, mods can be changed at any time.
8. Be patient, and don't settle... If you get a Req 10 14^50 Fellblade (I use Fellblades as an example, but this is true for all rare weapons), don't bother merching it, just hold on to it, and anytime you in a city, advertise your WTS spam a few times. It doesn't hurt anything to try, and a lot of people out there are looking for something not perfect.
9. No offence to the Guru price guide place. But when people say "Guru says xxK for this" laugh at them. If you KNOW it's worth more (Kanaxai's Edge is worth way more than 60K - 80K) then sell it for more. Guru guide is just that.. a guideline. This does not mean you need to sell your stuff for that, and people who quote Guru price are usually rather noobish to begin with. (EDIT: This last statement is not directed at the people who create the price guide, just those people who say "Guru says it goes for xxK...")

There is more to it than that, but you get the idea. Basically, use smart business tactics.. Oh, and instead of spamming WTS all day long, sell your good (or almost good) stuff on the Guru Auctions. People almost always buy your stuff from there... Try to sell good stuff though, you want a name for yourself of selling stuff people like.

Good luck to you, and if you have any questions, or want some help (not asking me for money) my IGN is Lichang Zhou, if i'm not busy, i'm always willing to help people out.

I have characters located in the Deep and Urgoz's Warren

Personally, I believe group farming is the best way to make money, because its so much fun!

how can you be poor in a game like GW? I honestly dont understand that ppl can't make money in GW.If i have to list all the ways you can make money in GW.They will probably take up 10 pages in thsi thread. so here is a few ways for me to make money.
1)Alliance Battles=You can get around 2.5k faction per hour(assuming that you are leeching and afkings, so your team is probably losing) that is 3k per hour.
2)Farming=I made 3 million from farming Ghial and sskai sword at the first 2 weeks of factio. soloing boss to get green items is a good way to make money from nothing. The only truly valuable farming is green farming imao. Gold Items are 1st hard to sell 2nd hard to get 3rd hard to determine its value. I wouldn't recommend ppl focus on farming gold items. Grinind Trolls and Minoes are always decent way to make money. They MIGHT NOT drop alot of money but they drop crappy items which can be salvage into common materials that you can sell for a lum-sum price.the Ultimate farming will be UW and FoW, but they are advanced level of farming, typically takes up a large amount of time and effort. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody but the ppl who looking to buy their fissure armor without buying the expensive ecto and shards. If you have the skills and time to farm ecto and shard, you BETTER OFF run ppl for a fix amount of money. you OBSOLUTELY make more from running than farming.
3)Chest Running=I personally had never found any decent item from chests.BUT I have guidies found decent items from chest all the time.
but it is double-edge sword like Gambling. the return is high the risk is also high. I wouldn't recommend it for ppl who is not *kinda* rich to make money from chest running. Chest running is more likely for ppl who got spare money sitting around.
4)Running Mission and Town=I do droknar runs and Thunderkeep runs in my earlier days. It is a decent way to make money. But it takes alittle bit time to practice, new runners can make money from easier run such as asclon to lion arch to fund their equirement first. After you are fully armed you can do the harder runslike shiverpeak,Droknar,Thunderkeep and Thirsty River for high profit.
5)Buying and selling from Players to Players= most risky way of making money.Sadly it is beyong my capability to tell you guys how to make money from trading hence i am a noob trader myself.< lost 10x more money than i gain from selling> what you do here is that you buy cheap and sell expensive from player A to Player b for profit.
6)Service=You can make money from providing services such as Running, Helping with Mission,Consulting,website-designing<i know ppl who design guild websites and forum for in-game money> Technical support, Trouble Shooting and etc. For me i do consulting such as PC and running for money
ADN ONE LAST THING THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT IMAO
Dont Ever buy anything expensive,(more than 30k=expensive) i have lost a HUGE amount of money<10x what i would have now if i didn't buy them> cuz i bought the so-call *good skin* perfect items from other players before and now they drop to nothing. I have lost close to all i have made in my earlier days.<the days that we can farm 500k a day from Mino and Flesh Golems in Light Camps> The Ultimate key for wealth is that YOU DONT BUY, JUST SELL.In the long run you will make so money, alot of rich trader told me that they are rich cuz they made good investment, and I found that totally bs.They will be better off if they HOLD ONLY COLD CASH AND Ecto. Items are meant to drop to nothing EXCEPT Extremely rare items such as Crytalline sword, serpent axe and dwarven axe<but even crytalline swords do drop in price unless req8 or 9> but most of these investment are beyong our buying power and the return isn't that high imao. Godly Items certaily wont make you better than the Me with a 10k sskai sword and 7k dronar armors. There is no point to buy them in a game like GW. Imao you better off just use the green items you farm and sell w/e expenisve items to the *collectors*<ppl who collect godly items for the look>

Yeah, I wouldn't be recommending some of the things in 6. Providing real world services for in game money is against the EULA.

i think that taking some form of compensation from helping fellow Guidies with a GAME website and forum isn't that bad as long as you are not taking real world money for the game-related service you should be ok, i could be wrong tho it is like you help me with my webiste i will help you with your little green items I think i read EULA, you May not sell in game item or service for real world money or Items. Helping build a game webiste for in game money shouldn't fall into the category.
EX, Player A wanted a his website that is related ONLY to HIS IN GAME GUILD<not a anything related to the real world> done, but didn't have the knowledge or time to do so. and he knows Player C who can do it for him for alittle bit in game gold to pay him back the time he spent to help him out instead of farming the gold Player C can farm. Player A didn't get the money from selling or buying real world access, and Player C is not selling or buying any real world access as well. And they are not doing anything related to the real wolrd for any Real world access. How is that violating EULA? do you have specific link that you can show me about this matter? I run your lvl1 char from LA to Lion Arch for 5k, am i not wasting my REAL LIFE time just liek Player C to get the in game gold?Am i NOT taking my REAL LIFE ACCESS WHICH IS MY LABOR for virtual goods? is that violation of EULA too? would liek to hear from official dev or GM from GW about this matter too if that is violating, Paying someone REAL Money to build his fansite related to GW should be violation too. Labor,Time and money are all REAL LIFE Access if you guys have EVER TAKEN economic 101. Savio what you are saying is not making any sense to me. What You think doesn't tranlater into whether or not it is premissible by the EULA as well. if you have evidence i would suggest you post a link.

What you think doesn't translate into whether or not it's permissible by the EULA.

I'm not sure why people seem to think its too hard to make gold on this game.. I've been playing for about 3 months, and I have 2 sets of 15k armor, a 55 monk, storage maxed out on gold (1,000 plat), and 2 of my chars are maxed out with 100 plat each in inventory. Honestly I haven't put in tons of work for it eithor. Play a couple hours a day, buy/resell, powerlevel, farm uw when availabe. If I tried, I could easily get around 75-100k in a day almost guaranteed. The main thing I did, was save. When I got up to 400k, I spent it on a 350k item, that I could barely sell for 150k, out of ignorance I lost 200k. So just be smart, learn to the prices of items before buying, and don't give in to selling for half of what you wanted.
