atm u cant, im guessing a.net is going to have to change the way that the NPC operates for it to happen fingers crossed its in the next update!

to charm a pet move your party away from the pet then using the flag send ur hero in alone and make it use charm animal that way no one can kill it when it goes hostile, also u may have to set your heroes to defensive (mine are all like that because their behaviour is erratic at time) otherwise they may run off to try and help

set your heroes to avoid combat and/or disable all their skills.

Just move everybody but the hero you want to charm the pet far enough away. Then, make sure you don't have your charming hero on passive mode because he will break the Charm Animal skill when he is attacked.

To get back on track with what the OP asked, can you change your heroes pet? He/she already knows how to charm a pet, but what do you do to get rid of it permanently in favor of a newer pet?

I learned that if I have Ranger secondary on my toon, I lose the pet if I switch from Ranger to something else. Even if I return to Ranger secondary, the pet is gone. Or it did work back in Factions/Prophecies.

Maybe this secondary switch works for Heroes too? Give it a try.
