Yeah, you know, those things NPC's say to you and the quest log really gives information . Just make sure you master the (undead) Junundu and then click at a Wurm Spoor and have him swallow you whole.

If you get to the Desolation and you cannot cross it, it's obvious you havn't done something. Go back and complete all the previous missions and primary quests you need to do until you get to that point.

You can only master the wurms (and move on in the game), if you complete the Gate of Desolation mission. After completed, click on a wurm spoor and you become a wurm . Now only rock can stop you

only quest i have is Crossing the Desolation and the only town i have around there is Basalt Grotto...

Obviously you got ran there and to Vabbi. You have to have done Crossing The Desolation AND Gate of Desolation or whatever it's called.

You need to do Crossing the Desolation, which leads to the Gates of Desolation mission. That is the one that gives you the ability to control the wurms and cross the Sulfrous Wastes without dying instantly.
