Default Charming Little Phoenix . . .

Hey all, I'm about to kill off Shiro and hit the pathway. Since my Hero ranger still doesn't have a pet I thought I might as well charm a Phoenix. As I haven't finished Factions before, couple questions.
Is this a one-shot deal? As in, if I enter the pathway can I only go in once or is it repeatable.
Also, I read some of the tips on death-leveling to make the pet dire (I've played a warrior for over a year and a half and know jack about rangers), and what do you think will work best for this part of the game? I'm assuming resurrection shrines are out.
Any other tips in general for hero charming?
Thanks!
