Same thing happened right before Factions came out; only difference is that the players that bought up the rubies and sapphires prior to Factions took a *massive* bath. Unless they sold out in the days before the game came out, anyway.

It's a bet; you pays your money and takes your chances. Buying up certain regular crafting materials (from other players) is virtually certain to pay off but will realize minimal profits due to space constrictions; same thing with runes/insignias. Rare stackables (ie: black dye/diamonds) probably have more profit potential but the downside risk is also much higher.

mini pets and crafting materials.

People are going to want as many mini pets as possible to unlock GW2 items - expect a real big spike in prices at launch and unless you have to deposit them in the HOH to obtain the GW2 unlocks, a massive price drop as people unload them afterwards.

I wouldn't bet the ranch on 1st/2nd year minipets. That's going to be an interesting situation and difficult to predict. Good chance that you're right about the general pattern, though.

Now, scarce minipets are another matter entirely. I expect the price on those to spiral upwards rapidly; how much of that effect has already priced into the market I can't say, but I would expect the really scarce minipets to command very high prices for a long time to come.

Rare crafting mats will be a good bet if you have to craft all the different armors in order to unlock them in the Hall of Monuments; less so if you do not.

While there's nothing surprising about people speculating and buying Diamonds causing their price to rise, there's one more interesting thing: Rubies and Sapphires!
While initially their prices were similar, now Rubies are ~7k and Sapphires ~2k which is totally awkward -
- their supply is equal - they drop or salvage or open in treasure chests or coffers of whispers in about the same amounts, I have found and keep many of each. I haven't heard of a way to mass farm just sapphires, any known places drop rubies just aswell.
- demand for them ~should~ be equal - the only known use for either Rubies or Sapphires is the Vabbian Armor, which uses exactly the same number of them.

I'm guessing there's some major hoarding and sepculation going on about Rubies, but I don't know of a leak of information about a new specific use just for them. Their price kept rising when the ectos started dropping, they may have become the new mean choice for hoarding huge millions of value. I myself used a mix of ectos/rubies/sapphires/diamonds/lockpicks to store my value and I'm surprised of such a huge and increasing difference in prices of 2 things which should be similar.

Another thing, the first predictions were that ectos will drop even more after GW:EN release may be totally missed. Obsidian Armor may be needed to "Complete" the armors monument and there are huge masses of people who never had it and may want it because of that.

Good point; depends on the mechanism of operation. If all you have to do to unlock it is get Obsidian Armor on *one* character I'd argue that most of the folks that could realistically afford it already have a set on a character; if there are unlocks for every character class I'd expect the price of ectos/shards to rise rapidly.

The E3 video showed what you could show off in your HoM:

Weapons
Armor sets
Mini-pets
Heros and Ranger Pets
Titles

It is unknown exactly how it will work:

If you put the pets in and lose them from the Guild Wars game, then I would predict prices for mini-pets will rise.

If you just need to "unlock" the pet (like a festival hat), then the price will probably drop signicantly, as people would unlock their pet, and then sell. (depending, of course, whether you can use the same pet on all characters).

Like everything else, it's speculation whether mini-pet prices will rise or fall in GWEN.

I do seem to remember someone (official... Gaile I believe?) that items put in the Hall of Monuments will still be available for use in game, so it certainly seems that nothing will go away, including minis.

Wow... you want to see people afflicted with Pokemon syndrome now?

Here's a thought all... if two of you have mini-pets the other one needs, trade long enough to put it in the hall and then trade back. Temp-swapping FTW!

Unless the pets get flags that only permit them to be added to a Hall of Monuments once (unlikely) this will almost certainly take place quite a bit. Particularly on the ultra-rare pets.

And yes, the potential for scams (WTT my Beetle for your Kanaxai for 5 secs for Hall of Monuments entry? GG NOOB) will definitely result in some in-game drama.

SCAM!

Would work for guildies, though.

Yeah, i was thinking of buying a bunch of minis last night, and then went "Hey, wait a minute... these could be worthless!"

Worst case scenario: I only store the Pets I've actually gotten as gifts. (if prices go through the roof).

EDIT: Actually, even if the pets only unlock once (or are removed from game), even though there will be a Spike, the prices on Gift pets will still go down before GW2. After all, new characters are being created all the time, and they will eventually have pets.

The only things that could realistically go up over time are CE pets, magazine pets, and those unique reward pets.

Hmm... how many people don't have a mini-devourer because they're too "low-end"...

WTS mini-devourer, 75K!

Deldrimor Steel ?

We will be dealing with them in the north and we all know they make some nice things. I'm betting to see a nice spike in that as a rare armor component.

The price of deldrimor steel might go up a bit,but not much. as they can be crafted for cheap materials.

True..... but then again so can Elonian Leather Squares but their price has constantly risen. Most the time when it comes to farming the cheaper materials to craft the rare ones people are generally lazy.

I tried to play the market with NF - bought a BUNCH of Superior Absorptions (knew everyone would get them for their Koss), a few major vigors, and a couple minor vigors.

Lost as much money on the ABS as I made on the Minor vigors.
The lesson is - unless you are dealing in STACKS of rare materials, you arent going to "get rich".

OK silk is one that has been in the game since the beginning and never used except in beta. so Monk silk armor, is a given... Fur almost assured to be used for some kind of charr armor type...

Look at it this way. if there is not a purpose for something now, there will prob be a purpose for it in the "expansion" or what they want to say ids the last of this part of the franchise. but seeing as there are special unlocks from this game that continue on to GW2 that have no other way to get. hummm leads me to believe that eventually something new will still be going on in the current game. Just to keep the interest going in both games... so we will see ...

Personally I am stocking up on charcoal, fur, and silk. big time... thats my feeling on it... I only really want some good armor for my monk... I have used the same old fissure armor for so long now that I just want something nice and new for him... I typically change my ranger armor all the time, but not the expensive stuff. Just whatever basic armor comes around that catches my fancy.

I had almost 200 fur, but I gave them all to a friend for her armour, not sure if she ever used it. ah well.

I has a diamond I got aaages ago and have been keeping hidden for EotN. Then hopefully price spike to help me get my assassin some 15K armour if there's a nice one.
