I'm not a big fan of elves, (everything after LotR is a rip off) but it's nice to change things around..

Only thing I want to know is if my Sylvari character will be able to inherit my current human characters junk from the HoM.

This has been said time and time again. You're GW2 Chars will not inherit items from you're HoM in the sense that they can use them. You're accomplishments in the HoM will unlock special items/weapons/whatever in GW2. So yes, there will likely be unlocks for you're Sylvari character.

Those against Elves: are you against Dwarves as well?

'Cause they are both "borrowed" from Tolkien (who himself borrowed from various sources, albeit, not in the detail presented in LoTR).

Of course, you could argue that the entire modern fantasy movement is all due to Tolkien. No Tolkien = no D&D, no Warhammer, no Warcraft...

more likely, no Tolkein = someone else credited for every fantasy game to ever come out. most of the stuff Tolkien came up with already existed in mythology and history... It was just waiting for someone to put it all together, and that person happened to be Tolkien. It's a bit like saying Ben Franklin invented lightning hehe.

It's hard to say "what would happen if there was no Tolkien."

True, there are other authors (like Poul Anderson of The Broken Sword), that could have been as successful as Tolkien in creating a whole mythology that lives to this day.

Like most things in history, it was a conspiracy of timing and talent that lead to Tolkien's ascendency. it is interesting to note how fantasy RPG's began: from a wargame called Chainmail by Jeff Perren and Gary Gygax. Perhaps MMORPGs would still exist without Chainmail / D&D, but I suspect they would be very different creatures.
