Found some info on the name "Drakkar."

It apparently is a corruption of the old Norse word for Dragon (dreki).

It is used to describe Viking Longships:

"There were two distinct classes of Viking ships: the longship (sometimes erroneously called "drakkar", a corruption of "dragon" in Norse) and the knarr. "

OK here goes.... throughout GW there are historians that have various tidbits of information about Giant creatures like this. This one in particular is probably (most certainly) called a drakkar. You can actually see the next one that we will see in char territory by looking at the map and finding the big ridges that run through the area. For more information see these:

Also.

It's quite definitely not a drakkar. Drakkars were boats the vikings used to sail the world. This is not a boat. It's a monster. A Freakin Huge Monster.

EDIT: Didn't realise the viking boats were named after their word for Dragon. I thought 'drakkar' was only used to describe the boat. It's indeed quite possibly a drakkar.

Drakkars where what they named the boats because they named the boats after Norse mythological sea dragons... but good effort.

Drakkars are the longships with dragon or drake heads mounted on the prow. Not all longships are drakkars. Usually the drakkar represents the chieftain or whomever is in charge.

Interpret drakkar to dragon/drake and this is simply Dragon Lake.

Aptly named.

No one seems to have mentioned the connection to Jora and her brother venturing onto the lake and her brother somehow connecting with something in the ice. He went evil, Jora lost her bear, etc.

I believe we found the cause of the affliction.

I don't care what it is, as long as I get to fight it and I get a mini-pet of it.

QFT

Too bad we'll have to wait for GW2 to actually do things with it...

It's sad, then, that we probably won't be able to fight it.

And if we do, it'll probably be tentacles flying out of the ice and a head in the middle... kinda like a Zelda boss

i bet that would be one of the variation of great destroyer's henchies or the great destroyer itself..:P..it would be senseless if anet comes out with another antagonist other than great destroyer in GW:EN that will only cause confusion story-wise..:P

or perhaps it would be mallyx or abaddon's reincarnation..

something that looks like a dragon (glint sis) in a place called drakkar lake... Maybe they call the place Drakkar lake because there is a drakkar (aka dragon) there... but thats pure speculation. Probably is an old norn fisherman (was an outcast...) who went farming (fishing...) solo, felt in the lake and frozed while using a elite skill called "drakk queen"
anyway, whats the odds of arena revealing the great destroyer in the preview weekend?

OK, let me clear something up - just because the lake is called "Drakkar Lake" and it has a large creature that resembles a dragon, doesn't necessarily mean it is a dragon. Ever think that maybe the lake was called that because the people who named it thought it was a dragon?

Think about it, European settlers called the natives they found in America "Indians" because they originally thought they had landed on India. That designation didn't make them "Indians."
