I think we should have to earn some hairstyles and colors, like seriously earn them. I know some time ago people where talking about "Neon" colored hair, so I suggested (and still think it a good idea) that we involve major quests to get such an exotic hair coloring.

It'd make you feel more perfected if it was something you also earned.

Well... there are no professions with obsidian black, really pitch black hair.

Just by allowing dye by having dies in the inventory, and the NPC showing possible combinations with the dyes we have...

Definately like a finished campaign and 5k-10k perhaps.

Guild Wars Eye of the North is filled with all sorts of new ways for existing guild wars players to change the look and appearance of their existing characters. It comes with 40 new sets of armor across the 10 professions including special non set pieces like the special Magma Hands, and awesome Ninja Mask. That are usable by any profession.
Although Ben says "look and appearance" he could be referring to one of three possibilities.
a) The ability to change your physical non armored look.
b) The ability to change your look through armor and special non set pieces of armor.
c) Both a and b

Until we hear from ANET the statement is both factual and vague at the same time.

So we are left at an impasse

I think haircuts need to be categorized say....

Basic Haircuts - 500g
Fancy Haircuts - 1 platinum
Extravagant Haircuts - 2 platinum

Those are just filler names, but you get the point.

Sorry yeah, my bad. I never looked at the male NF monks, and I totally understand why I've never seen him in game. He's a bit of an ugly mofo...

I still maintain though that 'look and appearance' customization doesn't just mean new armours, or at least I hope not because that would be pretty damn misleading...

I really like the idea of getting any haircut from any campaign you own for one price,
and new haircuts from GWEN for a higher price. So I can have sweet prestige hair to match my sweet prestige armor.

In fact, this would help a lot with "I'm bored with this character". So much, in fact, that I will pre-order GWEN the hour they announce this feature, if they do.

Apparently, WoW has thrown the gauntlet down. I'm sure GW will respond in kind...Can't have a hair stylist gap now. (...come to think of it, a new dance would be nice, too)

Quite true; I was thinking that it would be best to make it prohibitively expensive enough that people wouldn't be changing their hairstyles every week for various reasons listed earlier. Though you're right, I think something like 1k per hair style change would work.

I have a question...

What would be WRONG with people changing their hairstyles constantly?
What's wrong with people having fun in any way they want?
Why do people feel the need to limit other people's choices and enjoyment by making things hard to get, expensive, or "leet"?

Sorry. That was three questions. :P

For a short time, I played another MMORPG which allows you to change your hairstyle and color. A recent update increased the cost of a dyejob from about 3,000g to 6 MILLION gold. Why? I can only assume they thought the game was too fun, and wanted to put a stop to that sort of nonsense.

Please don't drag that attitude into GW.

Rhedd, I've personally no problems with hair styles. In fact I'd really like it.

I played Lineage 2 for quite some time and they had recipes for changing hair style and colour. You couldn't change bodies, there wasn't that sort of customisation available.

What does bother me would be the ability to alter complete appearance like you can armour. I've been over this in previous posts.

As for paying a lot of money for it... I'm of two minds:
1) Money would make certian things more of a status symbol, and therefore more likely to introduce a new type of elitism into the game. I'm against this. I'm against anything that might encourage players to ebay their gold.
2) Making it easy to get (in this case complete appearance changes - not just hair because as I've said hair changes don't bother me) creates a FoTM, clones running around - making them next to indistinguishable from bots, threatens the uniqueness of my characters, confuses the social aspect of the game - because we rely on appearance a lot, creates discrimination due to "fashion" factors, and places emphasis on the fact that the game is (in some ways) slowly pulling away from the RPG idea - and all these things would lessen the enjoyment of the game for me.

Neon hair... "Exotic" hair styles... I want hair and armour and weapons to have that "Guild Wars" style. Anything that makes it more cartoonish lessens the game.

Yea i would like to change my mesmer's hair and give him a beard. Beards give you wisdom, and mesmers should be wise, right?
Well, exepct for norgu, hes fat and has a mustache, mustache are for gays... no offense, but i allways remember Fred Mercury when i see a mustache ahahaha

Back to the topic: Yea! Let us edit characters and... sutff

Edit: And why in hell would i pay 15k to comb my hair? Even if you could change it for free you would barely change it, you obviously dont comb your hair differently every day, right? I mean... normal people dont, if you do it then... well... its your problem

If Norgu isn't gay then I'm not straight... Nothing wrong with it, but seriously, Norgu as a character is definitely of the "I like men" persuasion. I've known gay men who were straighter than Norgu.

Huh? How would MORE options create more clones?

If anything, it would make people less the same. There's a reason people want FoW armor even though it may look like crap. It looks different from the majority. This is also why people create unique dye schemes, and mix and match armor pieces (and why the new armor modifiers are so awesome).

Fact is, there is only a limited amount of customization available for each chapter. You can't even make a Tyrian character with Elonian hair!

Guild Wars badly needs the ability for more customization, it's been a complaint since Factions, and if it doesn't happen in GWEN, I'm willing to bet GW2 will be much more flexible.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that if we do get a stylist, it'll be a male mesmer. (with an outfit that even Doug Henning would find a bit flamboyant).
Ahhhh...stereotypes.
What'ld be REALLY funny is a Norn warrior with an axe and a barber chair (he'ld have to be named Percy or some such and have a pink roller beetle as a pet, though)

Or an asura with a magic stick of hair stilism.
Or a Kournan Centaur Hairdresser that loves to abuse 'Koss Gloss'.

Whatever it is, it would be great having different hairstyles available in different NPCs.

I agree, it would be great for customisation in GW, but the situation I'm looking at is this: An edit button that gives you the option to change your look to (effectively) whatever is available now. FoTM will create clones.

From earlier in the thread

Quote:
... the - "Oh I need to look like an Arabian belly dancer for 15k Sunspear, oh and now a European ice princess for 15k aero" is something I would rather avoid seeing in game, and before you say it isn't likely to happen just think about fashion in the real world.

If you are male, you probably haven't made its acquaintance yet, so let me introduce you.
Shadow, this is fashion.

Being a female, I've a more intimate knowledge of fashion than I really care to have. I've my style, which isn't fashionable, and I stick to it because it is what I like and it looks good on me. But the social world of many young women actually revolves around fashion. They pick friends by the clothes they wear, the shoes, the accessories, the colour and cut of their hair, their makeup, and how frequently they visit the tanning salon in any given season. All these things are fashion, and to many young women they change with every season. A look becomes flavour of the month and they strive to emulate it.

But this is a game, you might say. True, but real people play it. Real people who have the same concerns in real life that (possibly quite accidently) do carry across to the game. To see examples of this you only have to browse through the screenshot pages to see things like "oh, that armour looks great on ________" and pages later, "I just had to create another ________ because this armour looks so great on the character."
Right back before Factions came out, before titles, when playtime and bonuses and all sorts of other things were unimportant, players WOULD recreate their characters to look like others if they found that "look" to be appealing to them at that time, afterall, there wasn't too much to do once you'd finished the game so why not?

To have all character creation options available to all characters all the time WILL bring flavour of the month into play. It's not simply a possibilty, history and society says it WILL happen.
I've said many times over in this thread. I'd like a hair stylist. I'd like to grab a dye job, or a cut, or some hair gel. I'd like even MORE options to be introduced on that score. But changing character appearance like you can armour is something I'd rather not see.
