SF doesn't work because they're immune to burning, but straight fire damage still gets through to a degree, and if you bring Winter, you're happy.

Its just a change for fire eles that they can't use Searing Flames/Glowing Gaze to steam through the missions. There are many more fire spells out there to use if you want to.

and it's also better to look at the big picture. splinter weapon, as well as being the best AoE in the game, also fits very well on secondary ritualists. this allow me to pack some serious shutdown and utility as well as the best AoE in the game. for example, i run splinter weapon on both master of whispers and gwen, who are also SS necro and domination mes, respectively.

to achieve the same AoE with fire eles, i'll have to run two clunky, slow, fragile, and ineffective fire eles and miss out on all the shutdown and utility provided by my SS necro and domination mes. there are only so many hero slots.

by looking at the big picture, it's obvious that fire eles are obsolete.

LOL! This topic is hilarious.

"ANET, I GOT THROUGH THE ENTIRE GAME USING ONLY THE SKILL SEARING FLAMES, NOW I FOUND A MONSTER THAT IT CAN'T KILL, NERF THEM NOW!"

I don't hear minion masters complain when they do areas with no corpses they learn to adapt.

well... if that's how you feel then don't adhere to the masses... defy them and keep up with your 30-40 damage range, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun sticking to a single attribute for the entire.... Ohhhh I can't finish it. You're boring! Change your build it's not that hard!

:S just be thankful you didn't make a Mesmer. Well, no. Mesmers rock actually!

I'm surprised that if you had the time and money and ability to earn your tormented item you don't have the time and money and ability to come up with a better build and items to deal with these destroyers. Really makes me wonder... try winter.

Sadly I have to agree. You've got 4 different lines for a reason. I run a Wa primary, but every time I find a boss that runs a elite I don;t have guess what.. I switch secondaries and grab it. usually it takes all of 5 minutes, and the added flexabilty is huge. most the time it's an elite that I;ll never use. But, if push comes to shove I can roll with flow.

More so then the other Chapters, GWEN is forcing people to re-do builds (even if it's only for a mini-quest like the Norn Tourny). OP, maybe after switching to another element you find that it;s something you can run on a regular basis. Try new things, and go with it (your leet Torment staff not withstanding).

Wow so much aggression from people who don't read properly and choose to spout nonsense. When did I say I use a cookie cutter build or nuke? I don't use SF, and I do not nuke, I was running Mind Blast with a few other skills not that it matters. For the record I have tried and Obsid Flesh tank and didn't like the style of play.
If most of the people who came here to flame read what I posted thoroughly, I was asking for help with a build suitable to tackle Destroyers, and those kind enough have offered up advice to me. I don't alway run fire, in PvE I use Air, or if I'm in a melee heavy area I might use wards. Sure I jumped the gun and admit I was wrong to suggest a change in play style on Anets behalf, but for fricks sake people stop flaming when it really isn't necessary. If you can't be nice and offer advice don't post at all.

As for the Tormented, I saved, got lucky with some Gwen sales and had the chance to buy one. I'm only asking for help at the end of the day, I don't expect to be persecuted by people who think every ele nukes or spams SF. I personally hate SF.

20-40 damage against a destroyer?

Dang..

that sounds almost god-like having crawled through several dungeons with my warrior doing 6-18 damage with skills (with 10str and 15 swordsmanship).

...don't even ask about the assassin, it wasn't even funny (base damage at least...).

We had fun with 3 ele's in the party, (earth, fire and water). OK, so the destroyers were a little tough on the fire ele, but earth (unsteady ground) and water (shatterstone/vapor blade) seemed to have much fun... (whilst I spammed 'steady stance==>Heal-sig whilst getting pathetic damage with my sword).

Remeber, a warrior using NO SKILLS will out-damage an SF ele over time (lost the link to the 'Why Nuking Sucks' thread, but it's an excellent place to start).

Did that work well? If it did, even if you don't like it, try sticking with it and there solves your problem.

You know, just because you have a shiny Tormented Fire Staff, doesn't mean you can't swich to a different weapon when needed every now and then. If you don't want to, fine--that's your choice, so live with the consequenses (low damage) and don't QQ about it.

Anyway, as mentioned by someone else, Winter. k?

Thanks to those who have offered helpful suggestions. I just hate people percieving all ele's as SF/Glowing Gaze drones. I always look to innovate, but I do find it hard to switch to multiple elements when I'm used to staying with one (albeit various builds). I also have a Mesmer, Warrior, Dervish and Necro so I do know a bit about the various play styles on offer, running SS and interrupt heroes in my parties regularly.

I guess I've had a long hard day at work, needed some help and a little vent, and obviously touched a few nerves. To those who flamed me, change your perceptions and learn to listen.

Actually winter doesn't work that way anymore, they take the same amount of damage THEN it's changed into cold.
There's a thing about it on wiki in the discussion page.

As for fire eles vs destroyers.
I just put a sup air rune on my crown (+1 to attribute) and bought the cheap, ovberfarmed Skybringer. Then if you're willing to invest in 8k or so buy an elite ele tome for a nice air elite if you don't have one (I used invoke, I don't like playing blind) or just go cap one.
It's worth changing just to fight destroyers, they're a big part of the game
Plus you might start to like air magic, maybe use it in PvP?

the reason why your performing poorly against destroyers is because your a BAD elementalist sorry but it's true... I like to think I'm a good elementalist not because I'm a dab hand with blowing the crap out of stuff or even the fact my elementalist is 2 years old.

Fire is the absolute minimum to pass Elementalist cadet training. Your still a rookie.

I'm a good ele because I'm adaptable and talented enough with the elemental lines to hybridize or totally switch to another element if need be. I've got lots of other niche builds to sell myself off as a useful teammember to save the day as the ultimate utility.
'The Hammer' Geo/Warrior hybrid Similar to an obsidian tank
'Emo Healer' A fair substitute for a monk who doesn't run out of energy
'Elem hydro runner' Not as good as warriors but good enough.
'Shiro shutdown' Geo/necro for shutting down shiro and lich
'blastpheming Solo' That tricky mission I can solo the respawning beast without monk support.

It's one of the benefits of age. I was around when Anet Nerfed ele's to hell and fire magic was made totally useless for ages, Although it pissed me off I learned other elements and other mixed builds.

When I encountered one of those "flowstone elementals" first and attempted to burn them down like everything else to be met with (Immune to burning + 11 + 22) I didn't think "oh thats so unfair." I thought "This might actually start to get interesting " It's an opportunity to problem solve and impress your guildies with your prowess later but for now be honest.
"Sorry I'm totally ineffective against that monster. Might have to reskill."

sorry dude, no sympathy whatsoever. Id agree with everyone else, switch element. You dont have enough money? use your many fire elites to tear through the ice peeps in far shiverpeaks, earn some dough, buy the relavent material, THEN switch elements.

Its called playing the game.

I don't like it much, but I guess I'll have to experiment. My ele is Tyria exclusive and theres no way I'm buying elite ele tomes at 10k a pop but whatever.

I just put a BFlash on my bar and go into blindbacker mode while the physicals kill everything. *shrugs*

They have all kinds of armor, anything you do damage-wise is going to suck. Just play defense.

That's what I've been doing really Ensign, letting my heroes deal the bulk of the damage. I'm going to go build an air magic build and give it a whirl.
