Default Elemental dmg better than physical dmg?

Take an example:
Drakescale Vest
AL: 40
AL +30 vs elemental atks
Bonus +15 AL vs fire atk

Does that mean that it has a total of 45 AL vs fire(30 AL vs other elms) or 75 AL vs fire(60 AL vs elm)?

If its the former, then using a spell/item(like winter spell, or fiery bowstring upgrade component) that converts your physical dmg to elm dmg might make sense(unless the enemy uses an armor that has bonus resistance to yr elm dmg), otherwise, it would seem illogical to convert physical dmg to elemental dmg.

Other than the reasons listed above, are there any other reasons why one would want to convert their physical dmg to elemental dmg? Thanks.

You peoples do too much work to try and figure out the technicals in the game. I just run around and shoot at things and exploit corpses as much as I can. Which damage is better? Pfft, I don't know. I know that elemental damage looks cooler though.

The main reason people want to convert their physical damage to elemental damage is so that they can take advantage of the Conjure spells in the Elementalist line. A W/E using Conjure Flame/Frost/Lightning (in addition to other buffs) has the highest damage output in the game, or so I've heard.

It also undermines those players who use armor with bonuses vs. physical damage, as well as enchantments protecting from physical damage.

It's +45 to the base. Yes the bonus is pretty ridiculous but that's life.

if its 60 to 75 elemental armor, then even with conjure Element, an elemental weapon is still going to be inferior to a physical dmg weapon(assuming the enemy does not have a resist physical enchantment or resist elemental enchantment)

Not all of the classes armor adds a ton of elemental resistance like that. It just happens to be something that ranger armor is good for.
Indeed, I notice my elementalist spells doing very poor damage against rangers...

Warrior armor, on the other hand, though very high... is generally better against physical than it is against elemental.

It depends on what you are fighting.
Fighting a warrior, the elemental damage will hurt more.
Fighting a ranger physical damage will hurt more.
Against the other classes the damage will probably be around the same as they have less ac anyways.
In the PvE game it also depends on what you are fighting.
I.e Hit a Ice Elemental with a flame weapon you will do alot more damage per blow than with a physical weapon. There are various different creatures that have different weaknesses.
