Question Soul Reaping, "creature near you" ?

The book's definition for the Soul Reaping attribute is:
Soul Reaping allows you to gain energy whenever a creature near you dies.

How close is "near you"? What is the area of effect for this Attribute?

How does GW define what is and what isn't a creature?

More info on how this attribute works would be very helpful.

Pretty much anything that dies will work. Monsters, other players (doesn't matter if they are allies or enemies), pets, and necro minions.

I don't know the exact range, but it is pretty big.

Thank you for your reply. I play a N/R as well and I'm enjoying this build very much, despite what people are saying about Soul Reaping being useless. If you come across the answer to my AoE/range question please let me know.

Happy hunting to you.

I am playing a N/R as well, and people who say Soul Reaping is useless are silly. And if you are enjoying your char, who cares what other people think?

If you want a way to test the range, find an area with some monsters much lower in level than you (or roaming animals) and have a friend do some killing while you stand back.

The soul reaping range is actually really big, you can get energy from anything that dies, undead or dead, minions you summon, pets, whatever as previously stated by Deadroot.

And about soul reaping being useless...

Absurd! It's the third of my attributes! Being a necro/mesmer specializing in death magic it's very important and very useful. With the amounts of minions/death magic attacks I throw out energy is important to me, it's awesome to get 9 or 10 energy whenever one of my minions dies, then I have enough to just get another one. The mesmer half of my character I use the inspiration magic for. Energy Tap/Energy Drain are great ways to pull energy when you need it.

Deathly Chill/Swarm, raising minions and other attacks using death magic aren't very energy-reserving, raising bone fiends takes 25 energy, it's awesome to get it back whenever things die.

Yay soul reaping.

Just so y'all know, I don't think anybody thinks Soul Reaping is useless in PvE. In fact, in PvE it's really great. In PvP however, much like Death Magic, its usefulness is... limited.
