Default Secondary profession for my ranger

What should I choose, I can't decide. I am going to be trying to stay out of harm's way with this char but I want to have a char with a decent defense. I also want it to be powerful, yet not so much energy dependant. I am sort of leaning towards mesmer, but I'm not sure which to choose.

depends on what kind of ranger you want to build for damage i would go ele or mo for the conjure element or judges insight damage buffs. For a trap ranger i would go mesmer so that you can use the mesmers cannot be interupted spells to allow you to trap easily.

What? Sorry, but you're gonna hve to use some punctuation there Draken :0

You say that you can't get interrupted when having a Mesmer secondary? cause that's what I have and I still get interrupted.

Or is it some Mesmer skill that makes you "focus"?

Mantra of Concentration only affects skills specifically marked as spells. Won't do diddly about your traps.

I'm going to assume you're going ranger for the bow. That being the case, you really need to put points into Expertise, Marksmanship and Wilderness Survival to get the most from it. This really only leaves you with enough to go for one attribute from your secondary. We'll also discount /W as an option, as nothing really complements the bow use.

R/E - Straight forward boost to damage output. A good option for a one attribute secondary as all of the Elementalists attributes are fairly self contained. If you want maxed direct damage from your bow, go with this.

R/N - The only option I would go with is Curses. Weaken Armour, Mark of Pain, Shadow of Fear and Barbs all work very well with a bow. This combination gives a good increase in damage, and offers some interesting alternatives.

R/Mo - If your main concern is staying alive, then go with this. It can be a nice class to play as a back-up healer, but does lack in aggressive options.

R/Me - A caster's worse nightmare. Use Domination magic, stop casters from doing their thing, and then kill them for trying. The only way to play this is to go all out caster-hate. If that suits you, do it, otherwise look elsewhere.

I'm currently on my third character and it is a Ranger/Mesmer. On the Mesmer side I am using Conjure Phantasm(for damage) and Ether Feast(for healing) along with Penetrating Attck, Ignite Arrows, & Dual Shot. Can even go toe to toe if necessary(Conjure Phantasm), but generally can stand back and rain arrows down. Haven't died once yet, though only level 9 in Post Searing Ascalon right now.

If you're going for a minion-master type, I'd suggest N/R instead of R/N. There's alot of synergy between the Necro primary Soul Reaping and Death Magic. When you've got an army of minions, each time they die they give back energy toward raising the next one; minion deaths are what make Soul Reaping really shine. Ranger primary Expertise has no impact on Necro spells, so you'd struggle for energy raising an army. The way I see it, Expertise is mainly for those wanting to go heavy in bows or traps, and Soul Reaping is mainly for those wanting to raise minion armies.

So true. And if you are running minions I will love you forever as I play a Nec/Mo (Blood/Smiting), and I have boundless energy with a minion necro around from my soul reaping
