Am I wrong or is a Ranger ONLY good with a bow....or will my 9th lve ranger eventually be able to pick up a sword and be effective?

Considering any decent sword requires at least some sort of swordsmanship rating, and you're a R/N (according to your profile), I'd say stick with bows. If you were R/W though, you'd be able to pull it off.

The real problem with a ranger primary using a melee weapon is that you will never be as effective as a warrior with it. Warrior primaries get Strength which gives the 4% armor penetration with each rank - in the early levels it isn't that noticeable, but as you progress in the game and enemies get better armor, you will notice your bow damage far outstripping your sword damage.

During the final BWE, there was a small craze going around with the R/W build, I think someone coined the term duelist. In reality, you're going to be far worse than any primary warrior. I mean, you'll have less armor, and no strength. The only thing you gain is expertise, which isn't useful. Some people tried to implement Oath Shot, but A) There aren't huge recharge times on good melee skills, and B) Warriors get flourish anyways.
