Default R/Me PVP Build

Hello, my character is a ranger/mesmer build. and i need tips and ideas to improve my pvp to its best.

13 wilderness survival
12 marksmanship
3 expertise
8 illusion magic
8 inspiration magic

my main skills are

incendiary arrow -( ranger ) for 8 seconds arrows ignite target on fire for 3 seconds/ ( question: does this spell give you -5, or -6 health generation)

conjure phantasm( mesmer ) - for 8 seconds gives health degeneration of -5.

these two are my main damage skills, i use them to give the enemy -10 health degeneration.

if incendiary arrow isnt fully regenerated and ends too fast, i use apply poison


The only other skills i use are what i use full time to steal energy during pvp.

energy tap ( mesmer ) - steals 12 energy

debilerating shot( ranger ) - target foe loses 10 energy

* - an area i need help on is how to simplify the use of 2 skills (energy tap and debilerating shot) into one skill that steals about the same amount of energy, atleast 20.

i am not caring about stealing the energy for myself ,just taking it away.

i noticed the elite skill *energy drain* which steals 18-24 energy, but if i get that skill, i cant use incendiary anymore, and incendiary is part of my attack to stack up -10 health degeneration on enemy.

i need help in these areas, i would really appriciate it.

another question i have is, would apply poison + conjure phantasm for -9 health degeneration be a good substitute, and add hunters shot as well to make it max -10 degeneration.


.... my current choice of skills is for the purpose of draining energy/giving enemy -10 health regeneration / with the theory of killing them and not letting them have energy heal or cast spells. it is intended for use against monks and warrior monks, and it does work effectively/also works effective against other characters like elementals necros/ or mesmers/ or rangers, such as myself :|.

Your attribures are a bit messed up.

Firstly, 5 lines is spreading yourself too thin. 4 is managable, but not 5.

Secondly, you won't need to steal mana if you have a much higher Expertise. All Rangers need Expertise. Your build could realistically do without really high Marksmanship. You aren't out to kill, you are out to cause havoc among the mages.


On fire status gives -7 health degen, but it is always short-lived.

Adding in Hunter's Shot for just 1 more pip of degen is pretty much a waste of a slot.


I'm only seeing 2 other options for denying energy:
Power Leak - If target is casting a spell, it is interrupted and they lose 10-22 mana. The problem with this for you is that it's in Domination, so you'd have to rework your stats a bit.
Ether Lord - Lose all mana. For 5-9 seconds, You gain mana regen of 1-3 and your target gains mana degen of 1-3. Obviously this isn't a good thing to use when you still have loads of mana, but it is already in Inspiration and can easily allow a mage to drain themselves dry. Or if you've already drained them, leave them helpless for a while.


I've never tried using a Ra/Mes this way, but I hope I've at least helped a little.

OK, for one thing, he said that he was using the Energy Tap to deprive the enemy of mana, not to steal it for himself. Plus, Expertise doesn't affect Mesmer spells, which means that it won't help him there. Also, notice that he has no Expertise-linked skills.

As he said, 5 attributes spreads your points too thin. I use 4 ATM, but I'm trying to ditch one.

I think it's actually possible to get -20 degen, but the game will only show 10 arrows. I'm not sure on this though, maybe someone else knows for sure.

I use Hunters Shot, Conjure Phantasm, and Apply Poison, at the moment. If you're not carrying Drain Enchantment and/or Distracting Shot then your degen can be totally effed by a Healing Breeze (which doesn't totally stop it, but greatly limits the effect) or a Troll Ungent.

Is Energy Tap + Debilitating Shot really enough to do more than annoy enemy casters? I carried both of those skills at one point, but it seems like most casters can take that hit to their mana and keep doing what they're doing. Especially true of monks, who have remarkably low cost spells.

But then again, I haven't got Incendary Arrows yet, so i don't get that free interrupt.

There's no point to this post, is there?

-10 arrows is the most.
however, each pip of health regen/degen = 2 health per second, so -10 pips = 20 hps.
